Chroming a rim can cause the rim to become brittle and crack.
Quote:
Yes chrome can cause cracks, although not typically on something that doesnt have a weld line. The process is called hydrogen embritlement. Its formed from the electrocution process the part gets in its tank of water to do the plating, the hydrogen and oxygen atoms that make water split and get trapped under the plating. it attacks at the softer aluminum to escape or chemical reaction if you will. There are ways to minimize the risk of this effect by baking the part at a specified temp for "X" amount of hours to evac the gasses. I cant tell you the numbers cause it depends on surface area.
Here is an old post on the subject.

I have seen several threads in the past about polishing the rims to the metal. Basically looks like you rubadub with paint remover and voilla - shiny silver metal. It doesn't look as mirror- like as chrome I don't think, but it is sorta close. Takes a lot of time to remove all the paint and you will have to remove tarnish regularly if you want them to stay shiny. Looks a little less bling and more sport, IMHO.
I doubt if the weight reduction of paint removal would add any notable accelleration potential. I'm pretty surprized chrome would add enough weight to make a difference but I suppose it is solid metal and it is on rotating mass.

Been running Chromies for several years now with no probs on the ZX. Had them for about 8 years on my Valkyrie Interstate. Looks good and makes for easy cleaning.

Chrome rims are banned in N.H.R.A drag racing to to embrittlement. Do what U want. If you only ride to the coffee shop they are fine.

I personally like chrome wheels... Not too much chrome on a bike, but I think I'd powdercoat mine before cchrome, my driveway is 1/2mile dirt.. Pita to clean them!

My wheels are chromed. They look great and are very easy to clean compared to stock. If I was to do it all over again I would keep the stock finish and put the money toward a wheel upgrade.

OK if chroming makes the wheels brittle what will rechroming do? My chrome has begun pitting and they have to be rechromed by the dipper. Its covered under the warranty but my bike will be out of action for up to three weeks, F me. Should I be concerned at all? Should I consider dumping the wheels and finding some used stock wheels or an upgrade perhaps?
