New 14 in Black n Orange
Hi Everyone,
Just wanted to let everyone know I enjoy coming to the site for info. There is alot of good info on this site and alot of good people here as well. I just picked up my bike yesterday and I have to say it is everything you guys said and more. I have only logged about 80 miles so far, but there are alot more to come. I can't wait till I get her broke in!!!
I already have one question for ya. I know I have read on here that these bikes tend to run hot, but the whole time I rode yesterday I only got about one bar on the temp gauge and I live in Illinois and it was about upper 50's low 60's yesterday. So, I was suprised at that, but when I got home I let the bike sit idling for about 5 minutes and when I came back it was at about 4 bars I believe. Is this normal??? Thanks ahead of time for your help!!!

Sounds normal to me. I would not want to idle a "new" bike very long though, not until it has some good break-in miles on it.
I too had my new ride out this weekend, with very little bars showing all day in 50 deg. weather.
I think when you get stuck in traffic on hotter days that you'll see much higher temps on the dash.

They say the temp gauge isn't calibrated correctly. I've had mine read one bar from being completely full hot from sitting in traffic on hot summer days and it was fine. Never had it read "full hot" yet. Mine runs at the halfway mark when riding during hot days and one bar below half when riding during days like you described. When the 14 is just sitting still idling, it does tends to warm up quick though. Downside of having a "big cc" bike I guess.

My '08 ran pretty darn hot during break in as well. It is normal. It wasnt until i had about 1500 miles on it and added the Muzzy fan that it consistently ran cooler.

That is kinda what I thought. Thanks for your help. I will try to work on the pics this week. I just ordered one of those rascal grafik tank pads too. I think the black and orange is the best color so far!!

I was also pretty shocked out how comfortable it was to ride. It wasn't bad at all. Most people say when you aren't used to riding sport bikes that your arms and back will be sore, but I didn't have anything like that all, but I only put on like 70 or 80 miles.

Welcome!!!
Smartest thing Kawi did was steal those colors from Suzuki.
Only other color I would want.
Heat sounds normal.
Mine is one of the hotter running ones.
I installed a switch. You will understand more this summer.

Mine ran HOT!!! last May down in Myrtle. I was planning all kinds of mods for my 06 for Heat control. There was a blog about checking oil level. I changed the oil before going to Daytona for Bike week. Kawasaki 10w40. (No synthetic) Didn't get to do the Muzzy fan and Engine Ice or water wetter. My bike stayed in the middle. WOW, Thank GOD. I was in stop and stop traffic. lol Now it's not over heating or even coming close. Check your oil and change it if necessary. 4.2 Gallons. Don't forget that .2. LOL Worked for me.

Yes they due tend to run hot. Mine ran hot as well. A few mods will set that straight. Full exhaust and other methods. You get use to it after awhile. Congrats on the 14. At first I wasnt too impressed with that color, but when you see it in person it actually looks sick. I saw it tricked out at my local dealer and it looks crazy.....(300rear and lots of chrome!) Just make sure you set her up right so that you can enjoy her more.........we are still waiting on some pics dude.

1 bar seems pretty low. That is the first bar with the "L" in it only. Reading the gauge can be deceaving if you do not realize that the "L" is actually the first bar. Mine has been broken in for some time and it is now running 2 bars on the highway (L bar and the one above it) up in SE Wisconsin. I'm not feeling the heat off it in this weather but come summer........it's not all that bad. Steer clear of that highway construction, though.
If you went to 5 bars at an idle for a few minutes, that sounds perfectly normal. But yeah, why waste your ring seating on idling the bike. Git on 'er and ride. Do a lot of decels, vary the rpms as much as is safe for conditions and don't worry about hitting revs higher than recomended for breakin. Plenty people run it up to redline almost straight away and claim that produces a stronger, more trouble free motor. I broke mine in soft and I am very happy at 6300 miles. Absolutely no mechanical issues at all. Even so, I'll go a little harder if I ever get my cylinders rescrubbed one day.

the hottest mine ever got was with about 4 miles on it. since then (especially since mods) it doesn't really run hot. one time in the summer on a really hot day I got stuck in traffic and it got to the second to the last bar, but never got fully hot. its never puked any fluid either. congrats on the bike
