BMC Race Filter
Do I need to install a Power Commander if I put in a BMC Race Filter? Everything else is stock.

I was advised that a map would NOT be necessary for a performence air filter because the increase in flow is minor enough that the 14 is capable of self-adjusting.
You must want to get a PC on there some day regardless of what filter you use. I know I do.
I still have my BMC Race in the package. Let us know how you like it. I might break down and install mine.

Oh okay, cool. i already have my PCIII and my exhaust but I need to install it on the weekend because of my schedule and every weekend is packed with stuff so I do not have time, but I figured it wouldn't take me long to through in my BMC real quick.

For the guys who have done it, I guess it's a 20 minute job. I'd set aside a couple hours if you haven't done it before. The tank fairing is a little tricky to remove until you know exactly where the projections are. I was afraid of breaking it the first time I took it off.
Once you have the tank fairing off, all there is to it is to remove the two screws on the air filter cover and pull the stocker out. The stock filter fits pretty tight so work it up/down/left/right as you pull it.

A couple hours to change a filter? OMG! Now that is scary because I have the race filter so I am going to be taking this thing out and cleaning and oiling it at least once a month.

LOL! Don't worry about it. Once you figure out how the tank fairing comes off, it will be a 20 minute job. I just didn't want to lead you to believe you should plan on doing this between breakfast and heading off to work in the morning if you've never removed the tank fairing.
Refer to SM "FUEL SYSTEM (DFI) 3-125" for tank cover removal. It's not hard to do, it's just that you can't see any of the projections or hooks that hold it in place. There are a couple projections inside left and inside right of the tank fairing. One is just a peg, the other, if I recall, is one of those cone shaped pointers that snap into a rubber grommet. You need to spread the sides of the tank cover so they will clear the tank. Then, push the whole tank cover forward so that the inner hooks up inside the top slide out of their slots.
If you have rubber grommets to pop projections into, use a drop of silicone or a gob of spit because the grommet can get pushed in and deformed or broken if dry. Makes removal easier the next time, too.
You know, I think you might need to remove the side covers as well if you want to get the tank cover off. They are a PITA to get back on right. Pay attention to how the little knob on the front tip of the side cover fits into the shiny silver bracket to either side of your multi func meter. That's the hard thing to get back in right.
See? Two hours the first time you do this thing isn't asking much. It's fun. Really, I like to ride but working on the bike is great. Only thing that sucks is that you can't ride when the bike is out of comission.

IMO the filter is a waste of money. When you race, take the filter out. When not racing, leave it in. On the street you won't see or feel any difference in performance--

Already have the filter. Might as well use it now.

Question: What's better - a K&N filter or a BMC filter [or are they about the same]? I'm about to buy a filter for this thing and I know K&N and BMC both make pretty good filters. Cost is a little different (K&N is a little cheaper). Thanks.

smokin did some testing in an earlier post and the bmc race and no filter ran the same times. stock filter was slower. i would always have some kind of filter to keep the big stuff out. nobody i know has done testing with a k&n. i run the bmc street filter cause i ride mostly on the street.

I held both in my hands when making the decision
wich to buy and the BMC race was almost see-through thin.
The K&N was letting less light through.
I noticed a slightly crisper throttle responce with the BMC race
compared to stock, and this was when the stocker had less
than 1K miles on it and looked very clean and in almost "as new"
condition. Fit was good IMHO, despite the many posts I've read in
wich guys had second guesses about it.
