Ping Bill Eason ZX-14 Qustion
Bill on another thread you posted that most of the ZX-14 you have seen
had "Detonation Problems"
I do not take my 14 to the Drag Strip but I do run fast on the open hiways here
in Texas. See my signature for how my 14 is now and my advancer is at 4 degres like
Muzzy suggested. I always use Shell 93 or if on a trip 93 where ever I am, if I can.
How can you tell if a bike with bolt on's like mine has a detonation happening.??
Thanks
Louis

Have you pulled the plugs on a 14? The good old days when I had my then new 1983 CB1100F. We would do a WOT in high gear and chop throttle, pull in clutch and kill engine.
Pull over and pull plugs with mag glass and look at the white porcline and look for dark spots. We even " Indexed the plugs back then with a shim kit. Carb's no darn FI or sensors, ECU. I'm learning, you can teach a Old Racer a New Trick... you just have to ask
:-) I don't think pulling the plugs on the side of the road is safe on a 14....... :-) the price we pay to have a good aro package.

When pulling away from a dead stop or a idle roll in 1st, 2nd or 3rd gear clutch out, twist it wide open, you will hear it ping if it is detonating.
An engine will almost always detonate worse under full load low rpm, than upper rpm.
I found the spring and fall the pump fuel with added butane for winter fuels is very susceptible to detonation, but never had issue in the summer.
Bill will chime in when he has time as well i am sure.

Lug it from a stop in second gear and pin it, if it's detonating you should hear the valves clatter. I have heard of guys who don't wring these things out on a regular basis having carbon build up causing this.

Looks to me like some very good info/feedback from the members here Lou! With the mods you have knock should not be a problem. I would still look for the best fuel you can find [pump] also i would set the rotor between the middle and first mark on it. This will get you roughly 2.1/2- 3 degrees advance. When i check the timing on the 14's running' each mark on muzzy's rotor is actually 5 degrees. Its like they guys are saying best way is to read the plugs' but i wouldn't worry about your tune. Most bikes that come thru here is leaned on pretty hard. The 14 does tend to detonate without much warning...................Bill

Way to much unless you run race fuel. Set the rotor half way between the center mark and the first one next to it. This will give you 3 advance' your setting at about 8 degrees. I would not leave it there expecially in the heat of summer!.......................Bill

I will move it before I ride again. I have only had the advancer on a short time and
not many miles, cold and raining. Damn the guy I got it from told me each mark was 2 degrees. Never again will I install anything that does not have the information with it.
Thanks Bill

Hell i probably have info on disc or paper for most bolt ons and then some, LMK anytime i will try to help out. No longer then you had that timing advanced it didn't hurt anything i doubt ,just don't race on it ..........Bill
