Cams for the ZX14

I recently acquired some cams that I'm going to send to Orient Express for building up. Has anyone had experience with Orient Express cams? Is there a particular lift and duration combination I should be looking for?

I mainly street ride with some highway riding in there too. In truth, the extra power would only come into play for those few situations where I'm riding with a few guys on Busas and liters when we're on the open road. One of my friends has an '08 Busa and I want to be able to keep up respectably.

I decided to cam the ZX-14 because I have a set of Yosh cams in my '05 Gixxer 1000 and I'm very pleased with the increase in power over stock. Hoping to get similar results with the big Kawi.

ZX-14, PCIIIUSB, Flies removed, Boz Moira exhaust, BMC Race Filter (soon to be -1 in the front).

Any input would be much appreciated. Thanks.

+1 on the exhaust. Cams on the 14 have shown to give little improvement without a built motor.

Suggestions on a good exhaust? I know a lot of guys are running the Brock's Alien Head. What works good for this bike for normal riding?

Steddy,
How small of gains are we talking for un-built ZX-14 motors with bigger cams?

Quantum Motorsports (Indianapolis) does a nice package on the ZX-14. I might look them up too.

without a major motor build with head work the cams won't do much. i agree with teddy. get a brock's pipe and mapping and hold on.

Sorry, Quantum is in Ohio.

Wow, that's a killer! One thing I didn't want to do was tear too deep into the motor. I thought a nice head port, valves, springs and cams with a more aggressive profile would grab me maybe 10 to 12 horses. I was thinking with a pipe, filter, flies out, PCIII and some dyno time I'd have a nice little street package (190 rwhp?). Guess not. Back to the drawing board.

So the Street Megaphone is the way to go, huh? I'll check it out. Thanks.

that's what you get when you put a brocks pipe and map in there, read brock's diaries on the zx-14. now different dynos read different numbers but brock has dyno maps if you want a dyno queen. just load the track map or maxton map for all out real world performance.

I wouldn't drop over a G on some reweld cams.

On a budget i'd take off the head and put in good set of valve springs. APE adjustable cam gears and degree the stock cams a bit, and up the compression with a thinner head gasket.

There are a couple of good places locally that can do this for you.

Compton,

There are a couple guys in Chi that I trust with my work. Billy P (BPRO Racing) handled the work on my Gixxer and did one heck of a job. Elton Fish (EFR Racing) built me a 2003 GSX-R1000 Turbo that was out of this world. He's pretty good too. Outside those two I don't deal with any other tuners. Are you in Chicago or are you truly in Compton with DJ Quik?

Okay, okay,okay - Here's the plan:

Dump the Boz and grab a Brock's Street Meg. I really like the Short Meg so I'll probably do that. Keep the bike stock in terms of the engine but get either get some dyno time or download Brock's map and I'll be ready.

If I decide to open the motor up, limit the work to cleaning up the head a little, advancing the stock cam timing, going with some stiffer springs and throwing in a thinner gasket to increase compression, right?

Bear in mind, I'm going to be running with piped, PC'd, mapped '08 & '09 Busas, Gixxer 1Ks, R1s, ZX10Rs and other ZX14s with some tricks too. I don't want to come up lookin' like a sucka' out there. Thanks guys.

The cams for the 14 that will work on the stk bottom end are crazy high. Megacycles has a grind that wakes the 14 up! I would however wait and do the motor all at once. Lighten/balance the crank, cams ,do away with the counter balancers, carpenter head and your buddies will be chasing you.......Bill

I gained 10hp and 5 ft lbs of torque with just porting, polishing and decking the head. I went to HPC.

So just like the ZX-12R, the ZX-14 is all about "head games". I just find it hard to understand why a bike that likes to breathe as much as the 14 does wouldn't improve quite impressively with a set of cams that would help it do just that. Weird.

Is that Power Broker Marine in Addison? That's all I can find when I search that name. I can't find anything on Rev'd Up in Dekalb. If you have their contact info I'd really appreciate that Compton. Thanks.
