Dual Purpose Tires - Street & Track
Hi there Gang,
It's getting closer to track day for me, not the drags but twisty track.
I need to slap some new tires on the 14 and was wondering what tires will hold up good for some track time as well as street time.
I'm thinking 90% Street/Canyon carving usage and 10% pure track usage.
I'm at the office right now but I think the sizes I need are ... correct?
Front Tire - 120/70 ZR17
Rear Tire - 190/50 ZR17
I'm leaning towards the Corsa II CT's or the Corsa III CT's. Riders around here on the liter bikes are having good luck with those tires, but the life kinda sucks.
I do not have a lot of wheel spin and I can't get a knee down (yet) so will the ZX-14 suit well on Corsa's, or will it shred them to pieces.
On my Ducati's I always ran Pilot Powers and had luck with them, but never track'd them.
Thanks in advance ...

Guys on this forum take offence when you mention anything else but straight line riding
IMHO the Pilot Powers 2 CT is the best rubber for your purposes
You should also consider a 190/ 55 rear- it will give you quicker turning and more lean angle.
I'm on second set on the 14 and love everything about them but the price tag.
Track days rule! Have fun!

I run the Pilot Powers 2ct as well I love the tire all around great tire. I dont do track days but I do put em through the twistys on the road and they handle great.

Ahhh, c'mon mass...don't be like that. lol There was just a thread up "pound for pound" that had quite a few responses. Actually every guy at the drag track was telling me to get Shinko's and of course stretch it, but I just have to have me some twisties. I do know that every time I burn out with my new Metzeler M3's, a little bit of me will be cryin'.

Pilot power 2ct's should be the best of both worlds. I run Pirelli Supercorsa tires on mine for the twisty track and the street cause i can.

If you want mainstream, solid cant go wrong choices its: Corsa III's, Pilot Power 2CT's, and BT016. Ignore the rest. I weigh 320lbs and love the 2CT's, I put alot of highway miles on them during the week, and beat them on the weekends and 3500 miles later I am almost at the wear markers on the back tire finally. Almost.
You guys have seen some of my vids and know I can hang with the best of them in the twisties, but I got friends that went from 2CT's to BT016's and haven't gone back - though to be fair they were all lighter riders on lighter bikes.
-However- If you cant get a knee down, in all honesty, you really dont need anything grippier than a base Pilot Power (still a good tire in its own rite), or even the stocker BT014 if you are a lighter rider.

My YouTube name is aZX14blurr, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PqwLkYfz5bk&feature=channel
I had to delete alot of my 'best' vids due to a new law where I live, but the rest are decent and representative of my riding on the 2CT's. They grip awesome, very confidence inspiring.

So far the best prices I could find on the 2 CT's ...
http://www.ridedirect.com/showProduct.php?id=1153&cat_id=41
190/50R17 Rear $204.00
120/70R17 Front $135.95
anyone have a source better? Dont we have a tire vendor here that gives us discounts?

What law is that sticks?
Not like I'm ever gonna do you tube or any of those photo sites.
Just curious?
Might start just to f*ck with Wa. state and all our asinine laws.

I'm 180 unsuited.
Since you are in hot country (Tucson area I'm guessing)
You might be able to run more track oriented tires like the Rossi's, 02's etc. since you'd be able to get them temp fairly easy.
Not gonna happen here in Washington 75% of the time.
In weather we got now (40's) I run about 4 psi more in my StreetSmarts..
Is this your firsttrack day on the 14 ?
If so I got a number of suggestions and experiences I'll share here since the PM dont work, nor does the profile thingy.
Also SportRider just did their street &track day tire test. How convenient for you!
Found their results very simular to mine and others experiences.
For example on the Corsas:
they state moderate wear rates, very stable, but more effort to turn in and make mid corner changes. The tire went away for them after 4 laps. (They are pro riders, didnt get slick for Me until last couple of laps in 20 minute sessions and the first signs were spin on exits)
I liked the Corsas BECAUSE they require more input. Many like the CT2's because they tip in easier. I use throttle a lot to steer so the profile of the Corsas suited my riding style. (heavy over the front and spin the rear)
Pick up a issue and check it out.
Sounds like they liked the CT2's and 016's best.
which is what many here will tell you.
Thats a pretty good price.
A track day vendor might beat it, because they mount for free.

Last year a riding buddy of mine warned everyone that his brother just got popped for his YouTube video under a new law stating that you only have to show reckless endangerment (ie passing cars at insane speeds, passing midcorner, etc.) to get a ticket. The cops got him to admit who he is and they busted him.
Is it just me, or did the Pilot Power 2CT's suddenly go up in price?? I bought my set for $240 last year! Now its $340 a set. Damn...

Might have to do the GhostRider thing now and then blur out any road signage.
Silly boy, admit nothing ever.
To bad I enjoyed your vids...,oh well.
Thank the whole euro/dollar thing for the price thing. USdollar dont buy much.
When I was touring last fall I met a gaggle of europeans touristing here cuz it was cheap for them.
KawaBonzai,
I'll try to email a well composed letter tonight on my experiences and set ups.
For now let me say this.
You will have to dam near close all your rebound/compression adjustments and you will be wishing Kawi had put real springs on our 14s.
At least I had to after my first track day.
you might want to put your stock pegs back on.
With the tits ( they give notice of worse things about to touch down.)
I read your answers at your local web site.
That is a good start.
Write you later, TC
