Thermostat opens too soon IMO. On a 30-40 deg F day my gauge will never leave the one bar range, even after a hour of freeway commuting.

Lots of flow at freeway speed, sticks.
I never had a problem at track days.
Come right in and shut bike off. No problem.
95 degree day ( track temp in 100s) at Portland where I hit the governor every lap on main straight. 2 bars max. No boil over, hell I never even thought about it! Too amped from trying to pass 600's in corners.
Now trying to get across Poulsbo and then stopping at Casino it would 4 bar and puke when parked and shut off.
The switch handled that problem. I turn on fan as soon as I get off freeway and leave it running until I switch bike off.
End of problem, $10 switch, a fuse and added it to the terminal strip I mounted on ram air duct for power supply for 12v outlet and heated gloves.
Oh and as far as this ranting about some over heating and others not.
Every article I read about the 14 tests (06,07 stopped caring after that) in mags they all bitched about cooked legs and heat.
England, Vegas, SoCal test sites. Dont recall any mentioning boil over and naturally they were all fresh/new bikes. So areas aint the problem. KHI is.

PSSR and most track day outfits allow textile. Check on their web sites.
There is a gal that does leathers that shows up at track days. Bet you could get good leads for that,at our local site in the race forum.
Hey! I know why other 14's dont overheat!!
We live in the slowest ass state!!
I've been to every state when I had a trucking outfit.
Oregon and Washington DOES have the slowest, PC correct, Subaru driving in the hammer lane at 2 over, make Me nuts traffic in the country!!
Thats gotta be it!!
At 3 pm,leaving Miami you better be doing triple digits or you gonna be road kill. (Bluehairs excluded) cuz at 3:30 you aint moving no more!
Denver, Hotlanta, Windy City any southern town and so on,
the traffic flies!!
So all them other 14 riders get to go like hell while we are stuck behind some latte slippin cell, phone talkin, microsoft puke doing 25 in a 35 while our bikes get hot due to lack or air flow thru our radiators!!!

Old Guy is right, keep moving and no worries....... :-) Hey the West Coast riders just split lanes and keep on going. Do that in the DFW area and you will Pay some coin, and get to make new friends at the court house.

Not here, lane splitting illegal. Most everything is.
state patrol is targeting speeders lately and bikes are #1

I like to split lanes and get home so that I can call my friends that are stuck in traffic and tell them to buy a bike.

Me Too.
I like to split lanes on cold wet empty mountain roads to see the next corner sooner.
Then go home and call my friends and listen to what I missed on the tube. poor suckers.
Aint doing that now cuz we gots the scattered snow going on here. bad for traction but keeps the lame asses of the back roads.
Will go ride later,
bike wont overheat, nor will I.
MMmmmm gerbing gloves good.

i think having an aftermarket pipe, proper mapping, engine ice, and synthetic oil together make the bike stay cooler. i have a cox radiator guard and it does not impede the airflow. no problems in miles of stop and go bikeweek trafffic. the bikes definitely run warmer with the stock exhaust with catalytic converters. my zx-14 has been rock solid with over 10000 miles. very dependable.

I just talked to our dealershit here and they said there's only one thermostat available for the 14 and it should begin to open about 165 degrees F. They've sold about 100 14's and have had none in for overheating (or even heard of that problem with this bike).
Just for the record, my bike hasn't overheated and stays at the middle bar and up to 4th and rarely 5th bar in 115 deg summer heat in the desert in Eastern WA. Ive added a second fan out of boredom this winter. It's triggered by the stock fan so the temp stays the same. I used the 4-way flasher button to turn them on manually (deleting the flasher function) in slow traffic. works with key off also. All in all, there's some good ideas here if a person needed to make some changes.

i have a question for all the guys who have no problem with cooling
Once your fan comes on, does it ever cut off?
my bike is bone stock but lowed, and once the fan comes on, it usually stays on!! I mean in the city , on the highway, all the time. i can think its because of the bike being so low, the fender is restricting airflow to the rad. but i could be wrong,
bur once it gets the bars up and turns on the fan, it stay up there even though it has never actually flashed or puked.
thats the main reason i want to add a second fan, because its no fun riding a heat soaked bike all day!

i have an update to this thread...I have 2 fans now ($40) but now that i have a zx 10 fender, I dont think I've heard them come on yet! I just rode 785 miles , mostly yesterday in the desert, and the gauge stays below the middle forever. Mostly cool temps outside though...(thats where the heated vest comes in)
