At a sprint meeting some years ago we were fooling around during the lunch break on a paddock bike and I foolishly broke my own rule and rode without gloves. Unfortunately I managed to loop the bike but tried to hang on and save it, this resulted in me grinding my knuckles to the bone with my hands trapped under the bars.
In the medics area they wanted to put huge bandages on my hands and pump me full of anti-this-and-that chemicals. I managed to persuade them to just use thin tape so I could still get get my gloves on. They all thought I was nuts but they allowed me to participate, it was a great afternoon, right up until the time I had to take the gloves off again.
I've seen guys race with a lot worse, I'm no hero it's just what you do.
