Xenon HID headlight kit delay switch
Hello, I haven't been on ZX-14.com for a while so this has probably been spoken on already. I have a 2006 ZX-14. I've been doing some personalization to it like most riders do. I have recently ordered and received a xenon HID Headlight Conversion kit. Its not on the bike yet. I have a good friend with a 2000 mint condition Hayabusa. He just installed an Hid kit on his bike. He said that sometimes when he started his bike the new headlights either would'nt come all the way on or flikerd. He has since bought a delay switch that retards the headlights from coming on right when his bike first starts up. He said that now the headlights come on 5 seconds after it's started and it works fine. I know I will find out for myself when we install mine, but I was wondering if my 14 will need this delay switch or not. Reason being, when my friend with the Busa turns his ignition key on his headlights come on before he pushes the start button, which means those HID bulbs and ballasts are pulling current straight from the battery before the engine is turning over spining the alternater and in turn charging the battery as well as supplying current for all the lights. On my 14 when I turn the key to on, the parking lights come on but the headlights don't come on until I press the start button. So from what I can tell I might have a drain on my battery for a split second but then engine is going and the alterater is supplying the current instead of the battery by itself so much at the onset. Either way to give my battery a brake I'm going to put the delay on when we put the HID kit on. I was wondering what experience other 14 riders have had with this situation.

the stock headlight assembly recieves power when the key is on and the bike is started.
You are right in your assumption that igniting the HID will put a drain on the battery before and during startup.
If you run stock compression you shouldn't have any trouble, but for those running alot of electronics, and big compression engines which tax the starting amperage further, a delay or manual switch would be a good idea.

Something wrong with either the installation or the HID kit on your bud's bike. Likely a bad install to me. The lights will come on once the bike has been started, and not before. They will increase in intensity over the following 30 seconds. Flicker is NOT normal as they do not come on before or during crank.

Like Dub and FBA said, there is no need for delay switch, as the headlighs are delayed already and turn on only after the starter button is released and engine is running.

I used 10 gauge wire running from the battery to a relay that is triggered off the headlight socket and I have toggle switches to turn them on and off at my convenience.
A friend of mine has the same problem with the flickering that you mentioned, he used the stock headlight socket to power the HIDs.

Thanks for the heads up about the XENON HID HEADLIGHT CONVERSION KIT. I have a good battery in the 14 so it would make sense that I would'nt need to install the additional delay switch since the headlights don't come on until the start button is released and the engine is running. I think that my friend's problem with the Busa was that since his headlights come on when his ignition key is turned to on before the engine is started it was hard for the HID's to get a full charge to ignite properly. I have a couple friends with the NEW Busa so I'm going to ask them if the new model has a factory headlight delay like the 14.THANKS, Jay-Ah 14

the headlight will turn on if the bike isn't started. just flick the start button, it will turn them on.

I know folks that have installed automatic delay of 20 seconds and such before the ballast draws the huge load, they work great.
