5th gear speed?
How fast is 5th gear at rev limiter in MPH on a stock geared and stock tire size 08 14? My speedo seems pegged at that speed, but its kinda hard to tell with the helmet buffering a little at those speeds.

Naww, the only thing you're gonna hit in 5ht gear is the rev limiter. I've had mine to the speed limiter a half dozen times already, 5th gear is ?maybe 170?. Hell, 6th gear at the speed limiter is already close enough to redline. Don't forget the stock speedo error though: 8% on average means that a 188 indicated is actually 172mph, so I guess I can see where you all are getting your numbers from. When I hit my speed limiter in 6th gear the speedo was buried somewhere in the 190's indicated.
Apparently Kawasaki sets there speed limiter based on what the speedo SHOULD read versus the BS number it shows. Wonder if that means when I put my speedo healer on I will lose 18mph off my top end?? havent heard anyone mention that before...

steve thats because of the humongous overdrive of the ZF transmission in those cars used to give it great mpg. It worked, but you couldnt pull that gear to the top with anything less than 700+hp. 30mpg on the freeway was an aftermarket exhaust away though! Always used to amaze me to get 500 miles between fillups on long trips.

Look, with just my basic mods (Muzzy M10/M14, PCIII with base Muzzy map, K&N filter, flies out) even up at 5000 feet elevation in 90+ deg F weather I went thru 5th and into 6th with no problems. If you are trying to imply that YOUR 14 will not pull 6th gear then you might want to take it to a speed shop to have it looked over, something isn't right.
When I was at sea level on a perfect condition morning on I-5 I ripped thru 6th gear so hard that when I hit the speed limiter it caught me by surprise. And I got the aero's of a 6'5" cinder block - too wide shoulders, big ass head, and somewhere north of my 320lb scales comprehension. -- yeah, I know, my bike has to go on a diet. Wonder if a 520 chain conversion would save a pound or two? :thefinge

No, the stock bike will not run 187 mph in 5th gear. Even with the theoretical top speed at 187 in that gear. Tire spin and slip will keep you below the calculated speed (speed governor aside).
As far as "ripping" through 6th gear....
I logged my 190.76 mph run at Maxton. It took about 10.5 seconds to pull 6th gear. I am 230 lbs. suited, 6'1". The bike has Muzzy exhaust, 17/43 gearing, and power commander.

hahahaha yeah, but when I hit 6th gear I was about 2 miles from the Boeing freeway/ Everett Mall exits, had JUST passed a highway patrol sitting on the side of the road radaring me, and was coaxing every mph I could get so he wouldnt see which of the exits I was taking. There are some curves in the highway that at normal speed you dont even recognize as "curves", but I was nearly full lean through both of them! Good thing the road was totally empty.
I was mentally kicking myself in the ass the whole time for putting myself in that position in the first place. Too friggin old to be running from the police, ya know?
Funny thing is the cop was standing in his doorway facing rearward radaring, he started to get in his car but when he realized I was running I glimpsed him in my mirror stand back up again and but the radar gun back on me. Probably the fastest thing his radar has ever recorded! And gotta love the 14 mirrrors- vibrating but still useable at that speed.

GPS is the way to go. Accurate to about 12 feet. At any constant speed accurate to 1 mph. I have used the same GPS in all three cars, bike, Odyssey ATV and my RC cars/trucks. In the RC cars they record the highest speed reached and have their own internal battery.
Plug in your destination any they audibly tell you which way to turn, show you a map and tell you what time you will get there and which side of the street it will be on.
They have miles traveled so you can check you odometer.
Plus a ton of other stuff.

Going either north or south thats good places to cut the wolf loose. Be carefull, every trooper on that shift will be looking for you. They are like that.
I noticed and Portland that shifting into 6th on the main straight I would get more pull (speed) with the speedo unhooked. Run out of straight quick!!
