Come on Bob, you are the man who's done it. Did you get data on 5th?

My own calculations agree almost exactly with Gearing Commander, I make it 188mph in 5th at the engine rev limiter.

To be honest I don't watch the speedo (not accurate anyway) on a top speed run, I have one eye on the tacho so I can change at an indicated 11,300rpm and the other on the runway distance markers.

Hmm. I thought the tach redline was 11,000rpm. And you have different gearing than stock- so is that statement for your setup NOW or when it was STOCK?

The tach redline is 11000. It will turn close to 11500 indicated before hitting the limiter. The tach is quite optimistic.

Gearing Commander shows my 17/43 gearing as good for 198 mph. I hit the limiter after trapping at 190.76 mph (At The Maxton Mile). That was on a stock tire, with about 1300 miles on it.

Bob, what gearing were you running in order to go 205 mph?

Ok, a couple of questions to answer. Firstly when I said I change up at 11,300 I meant indicated rpm on the tachometer. Remember it's optimistic just like the speedo. I measured the engine limiter at 10,800rpm on the dyno and that's the figure I use in the calculation of maximum speed in any gear.
Second, I was using 18/41 when I did 205mph but went down to 17/40 when I backed it up with a 203mph six months later.
Hope that helps.

Bob, you are saying that the true rpm limiter is at 10,800 rpm?

If so, that is very interesting. That doesn't seem to agree with some other dyno charts I've seen. What gear did you test the limiter in?

The 10,800 rpm I use was an observed limit on the GT Motorcycles dyno going through the gears on my bike when we recorded the power curve originally back in 2006. That's why, knowing the bikes own instruments were optimistic, I took that figure for my calculations.

It may not agree with other observations but the interesting thing is that using 10,800 in the Excel spread sheet I constructed to calculate my gearing for top speed runs does work out to within 0.5% of other peoples figures, like gearing commander etc.

We had a stock ZX-14 hit the limiter in 6th on the runway at Woodbridge, it didn't count for a record as there was a gale force tail wind, and that was at a speed trapped 198.7mph which works out to a true 10,500rpm on my table. If you allow for the fact that you always get some slippage at these speeds and add 7.5% for the optimistic tacho, which was reading 11,300rpm, then 10,800rpm is about right.

To summarise, using 10,800 won't work if you're reading from the bike's own tachometer, it's several percent optimistic and revs just past an indicated 11,300 (on my bike) before you feel the limiter. It does work in the spreadsheet for gearing calculations though.

Well, I'm only asking because most dyno runs I see take the bike all the way to 11k. And I assumed that they were hooked up to measure rpm. This is a vey important piece of data; I am going to verify the rpm limit once I have my DL-32 installed.

If the true rpm limit is 10800, gearing commander says 184 mph. And that does not account for any slip. I think it is safe to say that a completely stock bike will never see 187 mph in 5th, just as I stated earlier.

Don't know how accurate the dyno I used was, but here's where mine where it hit the rpm limiter:

Here is the dyno (not sure what kind, hopefully one of you can ID it):

The bike will be back on the dyno again in the next couple of months. I will check the limiter RPM again and post the result.

It's entirely possible that if there are any errors in my observations and the computations within my spreadsheet they are cancelling out. The numbers I get for speed and gearing are very similar to other peoples calculations.

I agree it's very important data.
