I won my first race!!!!
Last Saturday I was driving home from work. It was a beautiful evening in South Florida and I was really enjoying the ride. Turning off the Bee Line Highway I saw two GORGEOUS brand new Corvettes racing from one stop light to the next; a black one and a yellow one. These cars were pristine! The black one just hammered the yellow one, and that car gave up midway and turned off the road. I caught up to the black corvette at a red light and he started revving his engine at me. We were the ONLY two on the road, and I am usually too freaked out in THIS area to blip the throttle because cops are like roaches around these parts and can come out of cracks when you least expect it. I've never raced, and I am a HEAVY dude, so I did not think I could take him but I just couldn’t resist. I raced my engine back at him and gave him a nod. He looked like such a cocky bastard... the son-of-a-bitch even had his stupid shirt unbuttoned halfway and was wearing sunglasses at dusk! Suddenly I felt a NEED to destroy this guy when I caught a glimpse of him with his annoying smirk. The light shifted green and the first thing that went through my head was a prayer that I would not twist the throttle to hard and end up at 12 O'clock and launch my brand new baby down the roadway like a super ball. I know NOW that I did not have to worry about that since the way I hit the throttle was too casual to cause any trouble. He took off on me and got a decent lead, so I gunned it and before you know it not only was I gaining on him effortlessly. I flew past him in 3rd and before I got to the next traffic light I was already going over 110MPH! I could hear his powerful engine roaring in protest behind me. The gap was so huge that I beat the traffic light right before it turned red and left him stuck.
I know this is nothing to the veterans on this site but I wish I could describe the feeling I had during that race. My heart was pounding for like 10 minutes after I parked at Blockbuster. I was nervous that I was going to get stopped by a cop and have my bike taken away (that is what they do to bikes going at excessive speed down here now). I know I did everything wrong from the take off, to the gear changes, to my seating position, and whatnot, but I am SO anxious to go to the Speedway so I can learn! I am going to save my racing for the track, but wow, that was an eye opening experience. Thanks for letting me share!

Of course we can't condone racing on the highway, ha ha, but It's got to be a very special car to beat a ZX-14 which should do 0 to 60 in under 3 seconds.
I rarely bother these days. Anyone in a car who thinks he can beat a large capacity bike is a meat-head, not worth my time.
I did meet another bike last summer though. It was nothing special but he was riding it like he stole it. He went past in a speed limit, which I was observing. I caught him up again on the open road and he was doing some crazy stuff to get away, breaking every rule in the book. I just kept my head, obeyed the law and kept catching him up by using good forward observation and decent riding. The we got to a nice bit of open road and just when he thought he was really moving I went past like he was standing still and kept the throttle open. Never saw him again.

Thanks for the support guys! I can now officially say that I can see what the hooplah was about, and I am going to be popping into our drag forums to try to pick-up some pointers before I head to the track.

Nice one against that 'vette, Knight. You show 'em. Some of those cagers have to learn.
I never owned a raceworthy vehicle until the 14 so my racing experience wass limited to a few half-hearted, joke hotrodding exploits until last Summer. I can relate to every detail you explained in your initial post. Thanks for bringing back some vivid memories - the ground is covered with snow here and I'm not racing nuteen.
I have yet to come upon a car on the street that could compete. I've never even used WOT and I still have handed each car it's a$$. Only time any got ahead is if I come up on traffic and I have no choice but to give up - I just let the quarry go if it means risking the neck of some bystander.
I've taken out a couple vettes and a GT and a few others. Just watch those newer literbikes, if you're not really good, it's said they'll take you from a roll if you're completely stock and stay ahead to ~180mph indicated.

Cool post thanks! Got to keep those cars in their place.
Sad part for us here in FLA...if you'd gotten stopped you'd get an extra $1,000 fine with your ticket. The vette would probably be let off with a warning because it was your fault. It's always the bikes fault.

Thanks for the advice, but I think I am going to leave my street racing days behind me. HA HA! The cops down here don't play, and I am seeing more and more cruisers every day. Heck! I saw a broke down, rusted SUV pull someone over and I would NEVER have thought that was a police cruiser.
I know what you mean about the liter bikes though. Light, quick, and deadly, but I would crush one of those bikes like an elephant on a skateboard with my 350lbs frame.

Yeah, that's what we all said. Good luck. If you can confine your speeding to the track you'll be a heck of a lot safer and probabley get to go faster and you might just end up saving yourself money. Tracks are cheaper than fines, I guess.

+1 with the track
I spanked a local Viper so bad I thought he was tied to the street lamp...
afterward he opened the hood to show off his 250 HP N20 shot to boot.
The most gratifiing thing for me is we get supercar performance and then some, for $10K!
His girlfriend asked for a ride afterward too... she was HOT!

The more time goes on the worse the law makers get. 40 years ago I got a ticket for "drag racing in a school zone" right in front of my high school. When I went to court they took my license away but two weeks later I told them I needed my car to get to work and they gave my license back.

Try a track day school that has a good reputation. You will learn more from a good road race instructor than decades of street riding.
Seeing tha you are in flat azz Fl. do look into dragging also. Its boring compared to road racing (here it comes!) UNLESS you are into cutting your times with proper riding technique and modding your bike. Then nothing can replace the short, quick and straight.

I enjoy taking friends of mine who are canyon carvers and do trackdays at willow springs to the dragstrip. It's hillarious to hear them change their tune when they realize just how humbling of an experience it is when you pull up to the tree that first time. I still want to get a bike that I can do a trackday on... but they don't make fun of me for drag racing anymore.
Btw... don't waste your time on the bigwheels... the razor scooters are the ones you have to worry about. I saw one go into the 8's the other day

Those Razors are intimidating. Have you seen their new board graphics? Lightening bolt stickers make them that much faster!

Very True!!! My stomach did awesome things and had great suction on the seat!!
But that was 30 frickin years ago!!
Backing one of these big boys into a 120 mph sweeper lap after lap is mildly exciting too.
Maybe at 53 I KNOW my outta practice reaction times need a sundial not a stopwatch!

Ninja,
I'm in West Palm and I used to go to Moroso a LOT with my CBR1100XX. The Zx is a very different animal. I figure I'm about 4 weeks away from cutting my teeth again at the track with the new bike. Maybe I'll see ya' there sometime. I go on Wednesday nights mostly and once in awhile fridays.

That sounds great! I can't wait to get more involved... since I got my bike I've been doing things mostly solo although I did roll with the Ruff Ryder chapter for a day, but that was about it.
