All that jus2 take off a fender?
I would like to remove my rear fender. According to the service manual, there are about ten parts that need to come off and one of them is the ECU. I would have never guessed removing a little plastic flap would require that much work.
Does using a fender elimenator kit simplify the removal process at all?
How likely am I to throw up debris and break/scratch tail section parts without a fender (So you know what roads are like that I ride, I recently polished up crud catcher and side tail sections - no major scratches or chips to any - after 6000miles with rear fender).

if its just the elepephant dick mud flap, under the tail light, remove the tool box and the ecu to get at the bolts if I recal right... i did mine 3 yeras ago now.
If its the entire inner fender your talking about then, anything attatched to the fender, the side , middle rear platic peice must be removed.
If your installing a tiger undertail, its easier to remove the tailight too I think...
again its been 3 years since I removed the mud flap, and 2 since I installed the tiger undertail, so my memory may be fading a little.

It is much less involved if you just do the fender eliminator kit.

I have not looked real close yet, but I believe all that I want to take off is the big pointy flap sticking down - just to drop a couple pounds and make the bike look a lot better. I bet half of all sportbikes out there are de-fendered on the back. Seems they could make this a single part that screws on under the bike so you could just take it right off leaving behind all lights and reflectors. Removing the bike's brain sounds like a pretty drastic step. Maybe it isn't as big a deal as it sounds.
I think those undertails look great. I might go that rout some day. I guess you have to accept the fact that it WILL get knicked up from stones getting shot up there.

There's 4 bolts I believe that remove that rear fender. I didn't have to take off anything but the fender. pretty easy actually. I fabbed two little L brackets for a license plate holder without drilling holes just using existing ones. I bought a flat mount LED light for the plate and connected it to the same wire as stock. whole project took an hour or less. It was nice to see the fender came off easy and not molded into the rear as some bikes. debris flying up? You live on a gravel road with a knobby on the back? good luck

I did the same as dcjens except I used 2 brackets from the hardware store.
Very easy. Save the cost of those fancy kits for a hugger.

yup, same here, bent 2 brackets in the vice ,
you don't have to unplug the ecu, just lift it out of the way, it sits on plastic tabs
The bolts for the flap are under the tool box.
Its really easy, just keep digging until you get all the bolts out
might take 20 minutes total.

+1 it took me 20 minutes to take off the fender and replace the license plate with two medium duty L brackets.. another 10 min to put on a little LCD and I was done.

same here as well, just two small L brackets from the hardware store did the trick! beats the hell out of $70 and dont look much different
