Disaster Averted! Thanks Bikeland!

thanks to a previous warning I read in bikeland, i saved having some major problems!
i was putting on my new cox radiator guard, every thing went smooth (great fit) until i noticed one of my nuts at the top of the george foreman grills was not going in smoothly. i stopped and looked and the grommet was just barely hanging on, i held it in place with a dental pick then lifted the tank, opened the airbox and rescued the other side of the grommet that was trying to dive into my airbox. disaster averted! the grommet has a brass fitting in it surrounded by rubber that would be hell on you engine if you sucked it in. this grommet can easily be pushed into the airbox if you are not watching for it. i suspect with age the rubber weakens and becomes more susecptable to this failure. also if you take your bike apart frequently as i do when tinkering it is something to watch for. whew! and thanks bikeland!

looking through smokin's magic parts bin we found some grommets. it appears that with the heat and possible overtorquing these grommets get very distorted. the newer ones did not resemble the ones that had been on the bike for a while. my bike is 2.5 years old with around 10000 miles. i am going to find the part number and order some extras. as you tighten the bolt it compresses the rubber and its difficult to determine how tight tight should be. this is definitely something to watch for due to the location of the grommets (in the air box)
thanks to smokin for the late night parts dig. your help is priceless, i'm lucky to have you as a friend.

Damn nice save! Wonder if it would be worth it to safety wire them?? Never seen them before when I was in the airbox. Is it a location where that would be possible?

its the one that threads through the top of the george foreman grill and the back of the tank cover, its the one long bolt oh the side. mine was on the left side facing forward. the grommet goes into a hole in the frame. if you pull one of the silver airbox covers you could get to it from the back.

They are called well nuts I believe. They can be found at better hardware and/or fastener stores. Kawasaki thinks they are gold for what they ask. Dont overtighten them or use lots of loctite. If you use loctite on the small ones (fairings etc.) they tend to rip or spin when you go to remove them. On the ones that are mentioned I used a small dap on automotive goop (find at Walmart auto parts etc.) to secure them to the frame. They DO wear out and tear with repeated over torquing!!! I've replaced mine as they tore from Me being ham fisted and in a hurry at a track day.

Is there a way to seal this bolt(s) from inside the airbox so if the bolt did rip off it wouldn't fly around inside the airbox and possibly get sucked into the engine?

If they did rip off during removal they would still be threaded onto the allenhead head bolt. Then comes the fun of getting them out! Mine ripped most of the way and when I went to reinstall the brass threads were pushed sideways and when the bolt wouldnt thread. eventually I figured what was up and ripped the wellnut out and duct taped the hole and foreman cover in place and finished the track day.. I'm such a rat biker it stayed like that for months! Hey I gots red duct tape that matches my paint.
