not a drag racer, best gearing

New to the ZX-14. I had ZXR 1200 and i miss that low end grunt that bike had. I am planning on removing the flies and adding a Power commander. But i have been thinking about changing the gearing to 17/44. Is that going to be too much power? To me the ZX-14 feels geared very high (i kill the bike in 1st often) , but i changed the gearing on the ZRX ( 17/42 stock to 16/42) and found i liked the stock gearing better, with one tooth less up front it seemed buzzy on the freeway. In summary, i love ZX-14, but compared to my modified ZRX (full exhaust, jetting, and filter) it seems tame down low. I understand that Kawasaki did this on purpose to save peoples lives, but will these changes be too much low end power, is the flies out and PC plenty?

not a drag racer (yet) but i do like power.

Go with the 16t front sprocket... it's $16 and if you don't like it you can put the stock back on. It's the same as going wit 17/44 but at 1/3 of the price. What year 14 do you have?

Pull the flies or try a TRE.
You will probably find all the power you need,

If you kill the bike often in 1st gear, you should focus on riding skill before mechanical skill.

Seriously, not to sound rude but the 14 completely stock is perfectly rideable. Even after mods (see sig) the bike is a joy to ride and has more nutts than I can put down on the roads and canyons.

My input: Can I suggest you do the 'flies out modification before you change the gearing. My bike is running 1 tooth down at the rear (17/40) which is geared UP. It still wheelies off the throttle, does the standing quarter in 9.84 and tops 200mph. Even running 18/41 gearing there was no problem puling away, I'm not sure what you're doing to "kill it" in 1st.

After it's last service at the dealership when the mechanic came back from the road test I asked him what he thought. He knew the flies were out and it was running a PC and SH but I didn't tell him it was geared higher. He described it as "very lively" and "goes like s**t". Enough said.

I agree with Bob. I would suggest you pull the flies and do whatever PC/exhaust mod you are going to do. Then make a decision on sprockets after riding it for awhile.

Pull the flies, get at PC, speedohealer, new exhaust and put on a 39 rear. The advantages are:

1) You won't get a dangerous wheelie in 1st gear and have to shell out $$$ for new fairings and to fix your broken neck,

2) There is no need for sudden acceleration as if to race someone because you already own a 14 and everyone knows they are the fastest. so you don't have to race anyone,

3) With a 39 rear you should see around 85 to 100 miles to the gallon,

4) You can go over 200 mph if ever the need arises, like you have to find a bathrooom fast--

i felt mine was too soft when stock so i pulled the flies out (fabulous change in itself) and put a 16 tooth on the front (make sure you put in the rubberized one). cheap changes and it's a whole different animal but be aware that you won't be able to use full throttle in first gear as the front wheel will be in the air. be careful. have fun.
