Winter Storage

During months of none use (snow/ice) is it recommended to keep the bike on the rear and front fork stands?

Any time you store the bike for extended periods your tires are better served off the pavement.

What is this snow/ice phenomenon you speak of?

We have sand here that looks like snow this time of year

Here are some winter storage tips from a northern friend, perhaps they will help you:

Use bike stands to prevent flat spots on your tires. If you dont have stands you can use car jacks under the pegs and a support under the rear swing arm or front fork tube bottoms to balance it.

Make sure you have appropriate fluid in the radiator if stored in colder weather.

Get a battery minder or a battery tender or you will come back to a dead battery.

Put a fuel stabilizer in the tank and fill it up.

Clean the bike prior to storage and wax all painted surfaces.

Spray WD-40 into your pipe to stop corrosion and plug it with a rag.

Clean and lube the chain.

Lube all bearings, pivot areas, cables and shafts.

Use dielectric grease on all connections if you have not done so already.

Drain the oil completely with engine flush or change the oil! This one is debatable and there are people on both sides of the fence!

Clean the air filter.

Protect the cylinders and stop the rings from gripping by removing the plugs and putting a small amount (no more than a tablespoon) of heavy oil into the cylinders. then turning the engine over (put it in gear with the plugs out and the ignition turned off and turn the rear wheel) a few times to spread the oil over the cylinder walls before replacing the plugs. Change the plugs if need to.

If you have cards, disassemble them and clean well! Shoot compressed air in all holes.

Cover it up to protect it from extreme heat and cold.

he mentioned "storing it" is why I put up the tips.

Plus starting it once a week doesn't address:

Use bike stands to prevent flat spots on your tires

Make sure you have appropriate fluid in the radiator if stored in colder weather.

fuel stabilizer in the tank.

Cover it up to protect it from extreme heat and cold.

If you don't have stands air your tires way up to help prevent flat spots.

SteveWFL,

Yes, your tips are much appreciated. One of my concerns was spring pressure issues resulting from the front wheel being on the pavement. I know starting once a week only leads to condensation in the motor due to oil temps not high enough to burn contaminates.

Don`t plug your pipe with a rag. It just gives the mice more bedding in your mufflers, better to use a hard plug.
