OIL leak

Well My 08 is leaking oil from the left side of the valve cover, and a little from the right. I have read a few posts about changing to a newer style gasket, When did they start using the "newer style"?
Is there room to remove the valve cover with the motor in the bike?
Its still under warranty but My local Kawasaki/ Harley stealership here in Angleton is a joke, I'd rather do it myself.

Is your '08 still under warranty?

I thought Kawi had the valve cover issues resolved (after having my '06 in the warranty shop many times and Kawi techs couldn't figure it out)

Yes under warranty, but there is no way I will take my bike there again. I'm going to do this myself. I have 6000 miles on it and it just started.

if you can't find a good dealership, clean the surfaces well and use some 3m weather stripper sealer with the new gasket and you won't see another drip.

Weather stripper sealer? I'll give it a shot. How about some bolt torque #'s Is there a step by step on this? Or is it just remove the farings ect, and remove the bolts?

correction 3m super weather strip adhesive can hold things in place like a contact cement but silicone will seal the problem areas. kawasaki recommends it on the inside surfaces adjacent to the cam valleys. kawasaki bond silicone 92104-0004 is called out but i'm sure any quality automotive silicone should work.

My torque wrench is in foot pounds, So that would be 7.25lbs right? And Anyone know the part # for the "new style" gaskit?

If I'm not mistaken, don't you have to remove the throttle bodies to get enough clearance to slide the cam cover back to get enough clearance to remove?
If you get that far, automotive black silicone was what was recomended on my ZX11. It worked very well. 3M super weather strip adhesive will/would work as well but you are in effect gluing the cover on. Would likely destroy the gasket next time the cover is removed.

7.25ft/lbs is right, kawasaki should have the right (latest) part number. i edited the above post fyi ratbyk is right about the stripper sealant i would not use it on the entire gasket, just a little to tack it in place if it is needed

Ok, so I will remove the side "vents" and fairings, then throttle bodies, then cam/valve cover? And use 3m WSA adhesive to tack it in place, and black silicone to dress the gasket? Will removing the tank and airbox help?

You will have to remove tank/airbox (and a lot more) to get to the throttle bodies. Reconsider letting a dealer do it under warranty/find another dealer?

Thanks, but I live in the sticks. I have had my bike at two dealerships one in town (scrached my paint) and would not repair when it was in for a recal. The other about 2 hours away spilled brake fluid on my tank cover and right fairing and distroyed the paint while having some work done on the steering head. They tryed to say it was like that..lol It was just a few weeks old at the time... I spent several hundred dollers getting new parts myself to repair it.. Not gonna go to the dealer.. I am fully capable of this repair, I just have not worked on a zx14 yet. And want to get a plan of atack first.

Dude I feel your pain my bike was facked 3 times by a certified dealer and I won't tell you the stories (nothing to do with the repair itself)....but I won't even turn my bike around in that delaer's parking lot again.

That whole leak thing just got to be a big aggravation for me. FL lemon law doesn't cover bikes under warranty.

My dealer tried Kawi recommended sealants, new (diiferent) gaskets, shorter bolts, etc throughout the journey.

Good luck with yours, I trust you can fix it were my dealer was whacked.

I think the first thing im going to do is remove the bolts close to the leak. And but a washer under each and re tourqe them to make shure the bolts are not just to long and maybe hitting bottom.

I did mine with high temp RTV and a new gasket. Pulling it apart wasn't too bad....about 2 hours from body panel off to back on. I cleaned everything real good, rtv'd the gasket too the motor and very carefully put the cover back on. I put a small bead of rtv in the channel the gasket lines up in and that's it.

removal of the cam cover looks worse than it really is. the fuel tank and throttle bodies do NOT get removed. take off the side plastics. there is a square-tube bracket on the left side with wire connectors attached to it, taking it off opens alot of hand room and most of the work is easiest from the left side. there are a few bolts toward the front of the cover holding down a rad. heat sheild, wire loom and crank breather tube. get that stuff out of the way. remove ign. coils, a little twist and they pop off like plug wires. cover is next. be careful when removing gaskets as they use locator dowels. you do not want to drop one down the engine. the leak is most likely occurring at "cam-plug" portion of the gasket. the relief in the side of head cut for intake cam bore is so tight to the top of the head that the factory had to shave the gasket to make it fit. be deligent in this area when cleaning and sealing. i also think part of the problem is the crappy sealant kawi used because the stuff on my bike was really hard. i did not use any sealant on mine at all and have been leak free for 8k miles. i would not reccomend using sealant on the top side of the gasket for sure because if you remove the cam cover and the gasket sticks to it, it could lift the gasket locator dowels and let them drop in the engine. should take about 2 hours or so to complete. hope some of this helps, good luck

Just left my local dealership. I showed them the problem for heck of it when I was there getting a few things. They told me its leaking because I use synthetic oil..lol I just said ohh! Not gonna get into a arguement with the tech about how it shouldn't matter.
