I need a clutch and springs......

I am looking for a set of stock (relatively new and unabused) clutch friction plates, possibly a set of steels, and heavier springs.....

I am about to purchase a stock set and figured some of you might have a perfectly good set that you took of to install some racing stuff....

I can PayPal this evening if the price is right and the parts fit my need.....

email wfsportbikes AT aol DOT com and it will go straight to my blackberry...

OK, so you buy a used set for say $50???...You get the frictions and they are below spec Photobucket

Then you inspect the steels and they are purple and black, then find out they are warped Photobucket

Your better of buying 2 new sets of clutch plates and steels, instead of throwing away say $50 you spent on junk, thinking you were going to SAVE $$$

YOUR WELCOME

Ok, the last clutch I installed was on a 1989 600r Ninja. It seemed pretty straight forward and idiot proof if you paid attention to how it came out.... I have looked at several reviews of clutches and found many people talking trash about clutches not lasting but a week or 2, and sometimes even 1 day. Are these folks putting them in wrong (obviously they are, but what are they doing wrong)? Is there something that I am missing as far as installation? Any pointers, as far as the 14 clutch goes, to avoid problems??

What clutch kit would everyone recommend? (I am looking for maximum grip and I am not worried about lever pull)

Also, are there any disadvantages to installing a lockup clutch?? And what brand would everyone recommend?

STOCK clutch plates. you have some options for springs, but i really doubt you need stiffer than stock unless you have some crazy power upgrades. a lock up can be street driven, but setup is very important(or you will break/burn up all kinds of stuff). they dont even come close to being how you need them out of the box, and everyones setup will be a bit different
make sure the steels go in the right way or you will f*ck up the hub and burn up plates eventually

My stock clutch has 85xx miles on it. It feels like my clutch grabs good down low, but in high rpms with WOT, the rpms go up but acceleration slows, eventually catching back up. The first 1k miles was break in, the rest has been hard acceleration every chance I get. I am around 365-ish lbs. Around 300 practice launches and actual 1/8 mile runs. I have been compiling times 1/8 mile and roll-ons versus 2 other bikes. I am trying to determine the actual difference between different gear combos of the same/close ratios. Seat of the pants, it seems to have the same acceleration down low and better top end by a few mph when going from 16t from to a 17t front and adjusting from a 41t rear to a 44t rear. I am assuming the chain going around the smaller sprocket eats a few hp?

And the bike is for pure enjoyment, terrorizing Suzukis, and the occasional dragstrip trip.

What is there to set up on a lockup clutch? I thought it was just a simple bolt on piece to the clutch and a spacer for the clutch cover...what is there to adjust?

I ordered a heavy duty Barnett kit with the frictions, springs, and steels.

And I found a deal on a cycle logic lockup.

85xx miles???...I guess that's over 8500 miles???

I would never but any othe clutch frictions and steels in any bike I own except OEM plates!!!

The barnett springs ok for your weight...Dont put the Barnett clutch in your 14, I guarrentee you will chew up your frictions and will have to drop the oil pan to clean out the oil pick up screen!!!

If your going to go to the DragStrip once in a while, then I would go with a 17-47 since you like the 17 front...Dont do the 18-49, you will cut the life of the clutch!!!...17-47 will be what your looking for as it will give you some more clutch life!!!

Why the problem with the Barnett frictions? I thought they would be heavier duty than the OEM ones. What causes them to chew up so quickly?

throw out the barnett fibers(or take them back if you can). i would only use their springs... but then I would use other springs first... Brocks, Schnitz...

Update. I ended up pulling my clutch. Frictions and Steels were all in great shape. I had 2 spots of blueing on a couple of the steels. All of the plates were within tolerances.

I installed new steels, frictions, and HD springs, along with a Cyclelogic lockup. Changed the oil filter and refilled the bike with oil. Cranked the bike and drove it around gingerly for 50 miles or so. After that, I let it rip. The dang thing still acted like it was slipping in the higher RPM's. Confused, I let a buddy ride it. He came back describing "the clutch slipping"........

Long story short, the problem continued for a few more days. I had another buddy test it out. Same "slipping" sensation. I decided to reload the map, as I knew the brand new clutch couldn't be slipping. The map reload fixed the problem. Seems between 7k and 9k rpm's, the engine got a little louder, but the accelleration backed off, giving the feeling/illusion of the clutch slipping.

I had no clue that the map needing to be reloaded could make someone think the clutch was slipping. I consider myself somewhat mechanically inclined (hell, I was a crew chief on C-130's in the Air Force) and I would have bet money the clutch was slipping under high rpm WOT load..........

just fyi
