Extended?
Damn you fast guys! I expect great times from Smokin and Ninjaboy etc... , but it seems like I see all these 9's from new guys or first time guys. Are most of you extended? I'm new to the dragstrip this year. There are those at the track that were just saying, "you got to twist that throttle man"!, until they tried mine. One guy rides several 'busas (one recently to 8.99). He's raced for 25 yrs. First time he rode any ZX-14 was mine and popped off a 10.003, then last night ran a 9.9. He said he loves how the bike feels but with the power and torque at that wheelbase it is a monster and one of the hardest bikes he has ever ridden; and my 10.39 so far is damn good for a newbie at my size. He said that it just HAS to be extended to get much more from it. I like the twisties also, so I hesitate at that. Maybe someday I can get that Ducati for the twisties and take this bike the extra mile for the drag. Anyway, I see all these new times and was wondering.
Thanks in advance for any HELPFUL criticism.

Do you have a set of adjustable lowering links and a front strap? How about a Catalyst seat? If you get these three items you will have a much easier time launching the bike, and you can put it back to stock height in 15 minutes.

+1 to the question of lowering links. If you dont have a set get some and a strap for the front end. Ive never had the chance to through my leg over a busa, but coming from a 1k the 14 is much more forgiving at the strip. I just lowered mine with brocks 3 hole links and dropped the forks 1.25" and strapped the front and it did wonders for keeping the front end down.
With you being 250 you might have a hard time with the lowering links in the lowest position and stock rear spring, Im 215 and the tire gets very close to the tail when I launch (or so my friend says). And Im sure you have heard it before, but its going to take some seat time to go fast. Good luck on your quest for the 9's

You're going to have to decide between lowered or stretched or both. I ride my bike on the road and I like it to handle so I just go for lowering at sprint meetings rather than stretching and back to normal for road-riding. If I was only concerned with quarters then I would stretch it too.
Even on stock wheelbase with it strapped and lowered, foot shifting and running 17/40 gearing for top speeds, (down 1 tooth at the rear), I have done a 9.84. With it geared down and stretched who knows? low nines probably. The 14 is a great bike and there's no substitute for seat time.

So Ninjaboy, that's kinda the same as "chicks dig the long ball" I suppose! I have the lowering links, just haven't, and I do strap it. I have a 16t in right now, but I think I'm going to go back to the stocker until I do extend it. Darrell, the guy that's ridden it, has given me ideas where I can extend it and return it to stock with not that much effort. Until then, I have my eye on the drag seat.......then maybe an air shifter, then extensions.... Got to love all the toys!!! By the way, it was my first night out without the flies, so I was a little careful with it. But even with the 08, it made a lot of difference in the way it accelerated. Much more linear (as I think Bawls has put it). A couple of tenths off is not that far away with just a little more aggresive throttle. YeeeeHiiiiii!!!

I know this shit is highly addictive...I went 8.82 two weeks ago, now of course I want to try to go 8.70's. Going to be cold tomorrow night, but I'm out of MR9, so I gotta see what I can do with good ole 87 pump gas.
Good luck with yours!!!

After you get it lowered, you may want to do the airshifter before the dragseat. Once your ass is hunkered down in the dragseat, shifting into second under full throttle was a bear(for me).

I've always had a problem getting my long legs and big ol' clodhoppers up. First thing Halvefast said to me at the track...get an airshifter man!
So has anyone on here just used an extra section of chain with two master links to (fairly) easily go between stock and extended? Not too long of course where lines and all would have to be changed. Just pop off the extensions and change the length of the chain. By the way, a lot of very nice times being reported on this thread.

I would say that riding it stock W/B makes you a better rider, get all you can get out of it on stock wheelbase you'll be a much better rider once you stretch it. I went 9.26 with fullpipe/air shifter/lowered,straped and 17,41 gearing. Could of gone 9.teens but got way to unpatient and stretched it.

Madboost, I tried your method of leaving at 2-3 grand before and it just didn't work. Lugged down or unicycle, one or the other. With the flies out its another story. I think I was revving around 3-4 and taking off easily with much more control. I'm not so worried about my times at this point. Better 60's with more seat time will take care of that. Mainly wondering if anyone has done the extended setup I described above so as to try (with a little work) to have the best of both worlds if possible (drag/twisties).
