How do you remove flys?
Hey everyone, I'm new to this forum, and just getting back into motorcycles after a long hiatus.
I've read here that I should remove the flys off of my 2008 however I'm not sure how to get to them. I imagine they are under the tank but I'm not sure how much of the plastic I have to remove just to get the tank out of the way. Does anyone know where I can go to get a basic step by step proceedure? Thanks.

First off, welcome to the site.
Secondly, you're gonna get flamed for not using the search, even though it suck.s.
third ... Get a BRAND NEW Klein #2 7-inch screwdriver from lowes.
Prop the tank up with a 2x4.
Remove the cover plates above the airbox.
SLOWLY ... (I mean it) unscrew the two screws per plate. Did I mention SLOWLY?
Rince and repeat 3 more times.
Replace the covers.
Secure the tank.

And by slowly I want you to pretend that your torque'n on a socket and you know that if you slip you'll get BLOODY knuckles.
With the fear of BLOODY knuckles in mind, remove the screws ... SLOWLY.

Thanks KawaBonzai for the quick reply. That is just what I needed! It looks like I can remove the tank without having to remove the side panels (just the air intake covers).
BTW I did try a search first however it didn't show anything useful. I could have just not phrased it correctly. I hope I don't get flamed too bad!
How do you like your Buell Pegs, and what is a Heli Riser?

The Heli risers are 1.25 inch spacers that go between the triple clamps and the clip-on's.
Combined with the Buell pegs I get a bit more upright without sacrificing anything really. My hips and bone spurs thank me every time.

I would heat the fly bolts if possible first. I didn't have a soldering iron or other means of heating the actual bolts, so I used a lighter on the screw driver head for about 30 seconds, then put that on the fly bolts. This melts the loc-tite on the bolts, and the bolts came out as if they weren't even torqued. I HIGHLY recommend this. TAKE YOUR TIME. If you do it right, you won't have to take the throttle bodies out to get out a stripped bolt.

+1 Soldering Iron...a must...the heat releases the lock tite stuff....
Harbour Friegth soldering iron is like 3 bucks...well worth the headache avoidance...
And plumbers putty around the outside of the fly (round part)...keeps it in place in case you drop a screw...after all the screws are out...pull the flies. Drop a screw down the hole and you will want to slit you own throat.

I let the bike run untill everything was nice and warm. Screws came right out.
It also helped to tighten the screws, just until I heard the loctite break free, before loosening them.

baaaaah mine came out easy, cold motor. I set the klein screwdriver on a speaker magnet to charge it a little.

I knew a guy the rode hookers bareback too...His dick fell of one day...
Take a chance...Is only like 2-3 hours of extra labor if strip one of them screws. I am sure one of these guys will come over and help you...Me, I will be out riding...

I'm a member and a fan of the flys out club. Alls it cost me was some labor and a new #2 phillips screwdriver. This has to be the simplest and cheapest mod with the most gain I've ever done. No regrets here,it totally transforms the bike from a smothered beast to a delightful giantkilla.

Go flies out. It will really help your 08 run better in the low end. Consider also getting the PCIII so you can fine tune it.

Hold on a minute.... You mean I CAN pull the flies on my '07 WITHOUT a PCIII??? Won't that F-up the motor?

Sorry guys I stand corrected.
You should use the PCIII whenever removing flies. This will correct the lean spot that will exist in the 3 to 4K range.

I've got a buddy on base that has 6k miles on his 07 without the flies and no pc3. As long as you remember that there is one little spike from 3500 to 3700ish and keep from staying in that range, you're golden. The bike gets it's best mileage at 4k anyway so there's no need to lug the engine.

I do have a PCIII/USB, and I ordered the LCD screen for it over the weekend.
I plan on removing the secondary butterfly valves on Friday, and spend Saturday tuning it in.
Soon I'll be a member of the NO FLIES club.
I'll let you know how it turns out.
Thanks for all the input, and I'm sure I'll have some questions about dialing it in.

I've ridden his bike and the only way that you can tell that there is a lean spike is by putting it on a dyno. Plugs look perfect on it. I personally think that if no one posted anything about a lean spike, everyone would pull their flies and not worry about it. I can't tell you the last time that I was at 3500 to 3700 rpm for more than a second or two. But then again, I've only put about 7 thousand miles on my bike since july lol.

amazing that some of you cant afford a $300 power commander. and you can even get the map for free.

300 bucks isn't much, especially if ones racing their bike then I would say it is downright CHEAP! But for those of us who like (and are able to) tinker, and are quite happy with the stock power output as is from the factory anyway, we can't justify blowing $300 bucks on a totally non-essential (for us non-racers) upgrade.
However, if pulling the flies without having to spend any money and getting a free boost is do-able, then that's what we're after. If not, then I'd just as soon leave it flies-in. The 14 is plenty powerful for me.
That being said, I just finished pulling the flies on mine (I was bored). Whooo-hoooo!!!! I absolutely LOVE the new found bottom end!!!! THIS is how the bike should come from the factory!!!
