Secret weapon for Bonneville

I wanted to share my secret weapon used at Bonneville last month. I'm sure you drag guys are familiar with these... or maybe not.

I had a special shaft made and the weights fit perfectly. Each one is about 5 lbs and together added about 33 pounds to the rear end. They worked out real well and gave me better traction but still nothing close to riding on the street or track--

Well, no, I am not, but, I guess if the track was loose enough............

I can see on the salt how that would help a ton..............

Ya I bet on the salt it works well, but most drag strips hook well enough that would not be needed.

They were used by a friend of mine, Dale Walker, 5 or 6 time National Drag Bike Champion back in the 80's. He sometimes used them on his front wheel to keep it down at launch-- I thought this might be more common at the strips. I guess not-- I don't frequent drag strips. I guess technology has changed--

they use weighting further forward at the strip, sometimes. i have seen a weight kit for the 14 at brocks or schnitz i believe. you would need all the traction possible on salt.

Hey Flyboy,

I see your tag line "One world and three national land speed records."

How fast have you gone?

Are you going to Texas this weekend?

Tom

FYI . That weight location is NOT legal at all other Bonneville meets. I am surprised BUB allowed it as the general rule is no weight behind the axle. LSL

Larry,

Weights are not behind the axle. Approved by FIM and AMA but would not be allowed in the PP catagory as the bike must look stock.

Tom,

No. I'm too far away and waiting to hear the results which should be announced in a week or two. Hopefully a couple more records--

Lyle,

There aren't too many holes in a stock swingarm unless you know about some hidden compartment I wasn't familiar with. Yeah some of the turbo busa's at Bonneville have 75 to 100 lbs of ballast hidden in their extended swingarms. But I have to stick to my original goal of having one of the fastest bikes around that can still be driven everyday on the streets and in the twisties as we have quite a few of them here in the SF Bay area.

I plan on attending my first ever track day soon and as this is the only bike I own, I look forward to the lightnest and agility that only a 14 can produce in the turns. We can't get too heavy now.

I was at the Air Force compound for the Air Show. Did you see the planes fly over the salt?

A team from Sarasota, FL wrecked a Busa last month at Bonniville because the weighted swingarm (150lbs) put the bike into a tank slapper when the rider lifted the throttle at 140mph on a shake down run. It was so violent that it broke the GPR 1.0 damper. Rider walked away.

burnout,

I have it on video a second after the crash. Heard his swingarm broke but didn't know why. He broke his arm in seven places and had to be taken out in an ambulance. At least it was a better result then the unfortunate man that died the day before on a streamliner.

For those of you that didn't hear, a turbo busa rider named Jason, departed his bike going 240 mph at Speekweek. The forturnate thing about it was he walked away and was racing with me at BUB three weeks later. It's good to know that a good set of leathers, either one piece or zipped, work really well--
