Testing stock wheel base 08 zx10 ..

Some of you know that my 08 zx10 has run 9.18 @ 148 setting at a little over 61 inches , air shifter , geared to hell with 15 /41 gears .. Also stripped of mirrors and rear pegs ...Well it was no fun riding on the street with all the mods so i put it all back to stock but for the pipe and P/C ...

My only mods now are A brocks alien head and his street map , lowered rear and 1 1/2 in the front ...Pump gas with the factory air filter in place , factory tire at 28 psi and stock gears..footshifting with the clutch..

I have only made a few passes with the bike at stock wheel base , i can pretty much count the runs i have made at stock wheel base on one hand..The best run stone stock with 23 miles on the bike was a 9.97 .. I went to the track tonight and got 7 runs in before the rains came and was pretty happy with the out come ...My best of the night was ...

1.62 60 footer
6.29 @ 118.45 1/8 mile
9.62 @ 145.55

I was getting faster each pass till the rain came down ... 84 degs and 88% humidity ( not great air) My hat is off to Kenny and Shine, it takes a real pro to handle a stock wheel base 1000 ...But i must say i had a great time trying to go fast with no extra wheel base ... I know it has more in it .With more runs i think i can get this thing in the 9.40s ... The trick is holding the clutch longer to get rid of the dead spot this zx10 has .It's BIG dead spot ( 0 to 8000 it's a turd ).. My 330 times are killing me but with each pass I'm learning what the bike wants ... With stock gears you damn near have to slide the clutch to the 330 mark !!!

It's NO zx14 for sure ! Don't get me wrong it is a fast bike once you get it going but it is NO zx14 or Busa by a long shot ...You want to drag race and go fast get a zx14 or a Busa , you want to turn corners get a zx10 ...

How's the DA at the track? I'm guessing that the high humidity isn't helping any lol. Mine is still sitting at about 4800, but hopefully with a little luck it'll cool of here and it'll drop to around 2000 soon.

Here's a video we took that same day, Rick. This one is a 9.12@160! I also have the 9.08 vid somewhere...

Be sure to watch in high quality if you can (go to youtube), it looks much, much better...

Smokin,
Don't tell Chad a 10 is no ZX14 or 'Busa by a long shot :-), last week-end his 1/8th was a 5.96 on a stock arm '04 ZX10R. I wish we had a quarter mile track close by.

Two weeks ago we were at the Gap and a guy had Chad steaming saying that a 10 is no match for a 'Busa but the guy wouldn't run him......all talk.

Chad did have his Maxton cut-down tank which helped with keeping the wheel down but he has been in the high 5's at two other tracks without the tank.
No doubt a 10 is not as good as a big bike for dragracing but with some tweaking and patience they can surprise folks.

Chad sure has enjoyed his. Been over 200 at Maxton, runs great at the strip and he can rail thru the Gap.

I hear ya Dan...

There are different styles of riding, for different bikes...

The 10's ET and MPH the same as 14's and Busa's with the right riders on each!!!

It's just that if you bog a 10 some they are not as forgiving as the 14's and Busa's...

That is the truth .. The bog is an ET killer ... Once i get a full handle on it the times will come down ... Do i think i can go as fast as Chad or Richard ?? Well i will never have the Super Sport motor or package like Richard has .. So 9.0s for me are out of the question ... But i do feel with a few tricks and some tunning on u4 i can get some low 9s ... I'm ok with that seeing this is a REAL street bike with Mirrors , mud flap , rear pegs and not being slammed into the weeds ..
Like Rick said it much easier to go fast on my zx14 ( way more forgiving than the zx10 ) But i'm having a blast trying !!! I haven't had this much fun since i got first my zx14 ....The best part of the hole thing is i'm learning how to hold the throttle wide open and use the clutch to modulate the power ... That is something i never had to do with the zx14 ...So this is all new to me and should prove to be a big help on any bike i may ride ..

I didn't check the DA but days like this here in FL i have seen the DA over 3800 feet .. Just to give you a feel for what it was like , at 9:30 Teddy and myself were still soaked in sweat ..

I had stock gears in my zx14 when it was stock wheel base , At 62 to 64 inch wheel base i run 16/41 , that seems to work the best for me ... Once i tried a 16/42 and it was wheely city so i went back to 16/41 ...

Dan i missed the part where you said it was an 04zx10 ...I have to say my 05 zx10 was much faster stock than my 08 zx10 ... When my 05 zx10 was stone stock < not even a pipe i went 6.20 @ 120 ... The 04 and 05 have a ton more power down low than an 08 ...You would have to ride a 08 to know what i'm taking about .. Even the 06 07 are better in my mind than a 08 because they have mid range power .. We have two 06s here that run 8.90s on the stock motor ..

Smokin,
Since I work for Kawasaki Consumer Events I've rode the '08 10's a bunch and I do know what you're talking about, you're right the early models do have more power down low. The shorter first gear in the new ones seem to be more suited for the strip than the early ones though.
Chad usually traps 126-128 depending on conditions. Lately he runs 128+ as the bike sits now with the stock arm, that's foot shifting too.
His bike has the Kawi intake cam, Coby head & Bears stacks. The headwork helped at Maxton and the street but he ran high 5.90's with just bolt-ons during a bike shoot-out in Chattanooga a while back. He put in a thin head gasket when he installed the cam and it didn't help his 1/8th times but the mph picked up.
Like I said earlier, I'd like to see hime run a quarter with the headwork he has now.
Dan

lol .... Hell i'm bike poor right now !!!!! I looked at trading the zx10 in a new 09 orange and black zx14 but the dealer will not take my zx10 in on trade .... He has 10 08 zx10s in the crate and he didn't even order ANY 09 zx10s because he can't sell the 08s ...

Lee, has the aftermarket picked up for that bike? I forget what your results were with the Brock pipe...

I wouldn't mind having one. If I can just lose another 30 lbs!

I didn't do alot of testing with the stock pipe but as i recall i was running 6.50s @ 114 to 116 ... With the Brocks pipe and street map i'm going 6.20s @ 118 and change in the 1/8.... In the 1/4 mile it went from 9.90s at 142 to 9.60s at 145 and change ...So it did pick up some good HP with Brocks goodies ... I have yet to try his race map with race fuel , i'm sure it will pick up more switching to the race map much like the zx14 did when i changed maps ..The Brock Alien Head is the best sounding pipe i have heard in a zx10 and looks cool also... Fit and finish are top shelf ...

As for the after market it is slim to none.... I'd bet money they have more parts for the new 09 Gixxer than they do for the year old zx10 .. For some reason as good as the 04 to 08 zx10s are it seems to be the red headed step child of liter bikes ..
