Why are exhaust systems so expensive?

Why do motorcycle owners continue to believe that almost a grand is a "Great Price" for an exhaust system??? ($999.00 for a Muzzy). Over $1500.00 for a Ti. What is wrong with us??? Looking at the materials involved, I fail to see WHERE any price over a couple of hundred dollars is justified?? Am I the only one that feels this way?
Full systems for a big block V-8's are HALF these prices and involve a lot more material and the same research and design.
Why do bike pipe manufacturers continue to rape us?

I paid under 600 for a full muzzy 6 months ago and 600 for a complete 2 1/2" flowmaster dual exhaust on my truck. What I dont get is how just slip-ons are near the same price as a full system?

True $1000 for an exhaust is alot. But you also have to look at the power gained
when changing the exhaust. To date, I picked up 8 MPH and dropped .5 in ET
by changing the exhaust and adding a PC3. Odds are you wouldn't be able to do
that in a big block race car just by changing the exhaust. My opinion only.

Or get a price on your factory one and see what it runs.

may be the best option continue purchasing from man in the pic CS posted, Mr. Muzzy. He loves your business and obviously he loves exotic cars. if he hasn't bought a new one recently he's due.

I agree. The gains are AWESOME and I believe one of the first things to go on ANY bike should definitely be the stock exhaust. I'm just amazed at what the aftermarket bike-pipe makers are able to charge for 8 pounds of stainless steel.

NYC-As a cosumer like u,I have thought of the same questions but then again I have wondered about over priced things in general.Face it, if we had the same business(any exhaust mf),charge the same & the public pays....we may ride that same wave of success.Cost savings on worthy product is where I tend to focus my energy(I love a good deal!!!!).I got a full exhaust system(brock) for $650 slightly used. it only had 2 scratches underneath(99 percent flawless).I then had the pipe ceramic coated for $225.All in all, I spent $1100 w/pclll and I got it like I want it...Here's a hint,I got my pipe off of the classifieds here(check down below).I did not buy the 1st set but in 2 weeks,I had the best pipe for me(w/major cost savings). Keep hunting my friend!

It's not just exhaust systems, its anything dealing with a motorcycle. Shit a crate motor for a ZX-14 is over $6,000!!! You can get a crate car engine for around $3,000.

As long as we keep paying these prices, they'll keep selling them at these outrageous prices. Kind of like gasoline, they jack the price to $4-5/gallon, but did we stop buying gasoline...NOPE. Are we going to quite buying aftermarket parts for our bikes....NOPE!!

Even though less bikes are sold then cars, I would be that the majority of bikes out there have an exhaust system on them. I would bet that only 1% of cars have modified exhausts. I also think exhaust manufacturers are a bunch of chumps, but oh well, I got mine for $400 shipped in perfect condition.

Like S-T wrote earlier, I look for used items when I can, and try to get good deals. I spent a total of $955 for my used Brock's Smeg full exhaust and a Power Commander with a custom tune from one of the best tuners in the business. I am MORE than happy! My bike went from 161/99 to 180/107...and this is a TRACK map!

a good set of heders from lemon or kooks, s/s is 2k, thats not even full exhaust on the car. You paying for race parts, not some flowmaster crap, zx14 is a full out race bike now go and get a system for brand new z06 and tell me how much it will cost you headers, xpipe and cat back, right around 3gs. Btw i got my Ti force for 600 used.

Hey guys profit is not a 4 letter word. I sell my own product and run into this a lot from some people. I did not start my business to break even. There is a ton of risk involved especially now. As soon as the risk/reward is scewed, I am back to working for someone else.

There are also a lot of unseen costs that must be factored into the equation. Advertising, R&D, website, health insurance, etc. My guess is if we stop paying those prices the prices will not drop but rather Muzzy stops making exhausts.

If it was that easy to make money, there would be a lot more exhaust manufacturers out there.

Mostly its R&D recovery money.... Look how bikes change and the total volume of how many units they produce. The comment about a big block chevy, they havent changed in years so the R&D money has long been recovered. Most bikes change every 2 to 5 years and they have to go back to the drawing board in most cases.

Another good example is outboard motors. A new 250 hp or 300 hp Mercury will MSRP around 18K to 19K. where as you could buy a new crate 572 GM motor with 700hp for 13K.
