First Trip

Hey guys, I've been lurking for a while now. I finally decided to go ahead and register and tell you guys about my first real trip on the ZX-14. I left Elk City, OK Friday and rode to Ft. Smith, AR. I spent the night at the inlaws and then rode up to Fayetville to the Bike's, Blues and Barbeque Rally. Then I rode back to Ft. Smith and saw Blackberry Smoke and ZZ Top and Sunday back to Elk City.

I have to say I absolutely love this bike. It is bone stock right now, but I was looking for some bags or something for storage and maybe some lower pegs and handle bar risers.

Any suggestions on things you guys have tried. What works good and what doesn't.

I appreciate the help.

saddlebags on a 14? Buy shit and throw it away on the trip. I have a perfect set of soft bags and if anybody sees them on my bike...steal them. I keep the bags in the house so my bike doesnt see them. If it doesn't fit under the seat, you dont need it. Buy a pc with the moolah.

Some of them look pretty decent, like the corbins. I just hate to pay $1900 for something I just plan to use for longer trips.

SmokinOkie-welcome, I know Cortech carries a set for the 14. Also a member on this board had a sweet set(Different Company) but Ican't remember which brand for the life of me. I'm sure others will chime in. In addition, you may want to use the search option above(type in saddle bag or tank bag and only search forum zx14.com) and that will give you more than enough info and some laughs on the way as you read some of our member's characterized comments! Enjoy!

Glad you enjoyed your trip September 20 I took my longest trip on my 14. I left Cincinnati OH with a club member who was riding a cruiser and we rode to Atlanta GA. 480 miles one way came back next day. I have a cortec Tank bag plenty of room for my toys, ipod, cell, and chargers for them. A extra tool or two and a shirt and under wear change.

I use Cortech bags and tank bag. Aint as sexy as a naked bike but it is great for hauling clothes tools and extra gear on long trips. I just blasted 800 miles of forest service roads around Mount St. Helens and itty bitty back country stuff in the canyons around the Columbia River. Just used the tank bag for that. Its mighty nice to have a cool drink and snack wherever I wnat to stop. Nevermind having the ability to change gear as I went from 40 to 100 degree weather.
Use duct tape (I got red tape for my 06) or clear shelf liner to protect your paint if you are on a long trip or leave the soft bags on. Dirt, dust will grind away unseen until you take the bags off.

I have the Corbin peg lowering kit and the Genmar bar risers. Definitely makes a difference. No luggage but considering a tank bag.

I've got a cortech tank bag and it works pretty well, but I read somewhere on here that the sport bags hung too low and got into the exhaust.

That's true about the Cortech saddlebags, they don't work on the 14 without modification. They won't raise up high enough to clear the exhaust.

I took these pics with my phone so bare with them if they are grainy. I love the Cortech set up. The bags will clear the exhaust IF all 3 are assembled as shown here. Without the tailbag those two straps across the seat will give you hell and vice versa. Without the saddle bags the tail bag moves back and forth when using the concealed bungee cords. So in a nutshell, they all work better together. And they go on and come off with four clips in 30 seconds flat. I hope this helps.

I did 1650 miles in 3 days and was able to carry more than enough stuff in my ogio tanker tank bag. Throw some helibars risers, a touring screen, and some buell lowered pegs on there and you've got a concours with lots of extra power lol.

NO problem.

Do away with those thick and thin straps that are for assemly WITHOUT the tail bag.

Assemble the two tail bags together via the vecro straps.

Do a fit test on the bike for overhang and adjust until they are to your needs.

Then assemble them with the tail bag flap and the four adjustable clips on each corner of the tail bag. Keep these straps tied in with the the bags. It makes for a quick on and off.

There are other straps that loop and clip to your rear pegs as well as the tail of the bike as you can see in the pics.

If you do it right it will have a clean and sturdy look like mine. You do it wrong, and you will look like a safety hazard on the highway, lol.

I personally would only invest in hard bags if you travel long distance MORE that you do local riding.

Thanks for the pictures and advice. I was wondering if the stock pipes would have less clearance than the aftermarket exhaust that you are using.

I love the looks of the Corbin Bags and would consider them if it weren't for this post.

I guess I just need to grab some Carbon Fiber Slip-ons to combat the heating problems. Will I need a PC to remap with just slip-ons or will it make very much difference?

According to popular opinion on this board, I would definitely invest in the PC. Pull the fies as well. Your bike will come to life afterwards.CF slip-ons should help ease the heating issue for certain. The corbins are nice but my time with them on wouldn't warrant me getting them. You put them Cortechs on, you will love them for life.

+1 I have the same setup, with the next size up tank bag. I love the tank bag setup because of the back side, not likely to sratch the paint.
I can fit a week of clothes in them as well as the normal tools etc, and still have room for small items during tourist-type shopping. The wife has her own for her 650r.

I think I'll try out the Cortech setup and maybe still try some carbon fiber slip-ons. Does anyone have any suggestions for the slip-ons? Do I really need the PC or can I get by without it?

Thanks again for all of the help and the pictures.
