I only have that problem when my front tire wears really bad or becomes unbalanced.

Tires were not balanced correctly.

I've been fighting the same problem. Also running Dunlops???

I made a few changes at the same time (lowered, Marchesini wheels, tires) and have chased the problem ever since. The shop double checked the balance and it looked OK. I even added a GTR steering stabilizer but still have the same issue you describe.

Weird?? Good luck on finding a solution.

I had a ZX11 which did the same on Dunflops. I put a new set of tires on and it was like a brand new bike.

What you are describing is a "wobble", not head shake.
You say "coasting in gear", what speed?
It's possible you have a bad tire, just go swap it with another one, preferably a BT002 Racing or Racing Street, see what happens.

thanks all for the input. my mechanic wanted to sell me a steering stabilizer but i would much rather correct the problem. after reading all comments i'm going to look at the front tire. before the dunlops the stock tires worked fine without the "wobble".To respond to bigbore4, the wobble would occur at 40 to 50mph.

Honestly, I would try a set of BT002 bstones, Racing on the front and racing street on the rear. Absolutely the best tires I have ever used. Not as good in the wet as the 014's, but on dry asphalt, nothing better.

I don't like Dunlops. Only time I had a serious tankslapper was with Dunlops. Put Dunlop back on a couple tires later and the tendency to tank slap came back. I never put Dunslops on again. Fuck 'em.

At 3200 miles your BT-014 front was shot. Just because a front tire still has tread don't mean its still good. 14's are hell on front tires ...and BT-014's don't last too long

Out of balance, is:

Rotation arrow correct
Does balance dot match value stem, will tell you about mechanic's quality level
Is rim bent, how many oz. of weight were used
tire pressure correct

Buy a balancer and check balance yourself to verify what you are being told is true.

"Buy a balancer and check balance yourself to verify what you are being told is true."

That is funny.

For the guys that don't know, with the tire and wheel technology today, they are usually so stinkin close it's not funny. Many of the better tires you get, will not even have a mark because they are for all intents and purpose,, "Neutral".

You find a decent tire that works for you and your bike, stick with it, and when it starts to feel funny, chuck it and go buy a new one.

3200 miles on the front tire? Its Done, get a new set.

Bigbore---I'm sure the majority of new tires are close to neutral, but I've seen New expensive tires that are a LONG way from neutral.

That is funny.

Wasn't meant to be funny. The $100 spent on a balancer is a worthwhile investment. Bought a No Mar tire changer and Marc Parnes balancer last year. 3 tire changes at this point without any issues.

I suspect that hard braking can damage an otherwise perfectly good tire. My second BT-014 front was less worn than the first with only 2,000 miles on it when it developed head shake. I made some pretty hard stops with the second tire and it failed soon. New Michelin front and rear solved the head shake. Have to ask myself what am i doing to the front tire subjecting it to more force than the rear when you shove 700lbs of machine and rider into a hard decell from 150mph +.

About the same as having an Elephant stand on your head

Front suspension config and settings will definetly help or hinder tire wear.

I used the Pilot power's on my 12, on some twisty roads and killed the front in just a bit more than the rear. I went to 014's, much better, especially in the wet.
Recently been using the 002 Racing front and Racing Street rear, good luck with the front, so far.
