NOISES!!!!
Had this bike about a month, and it has all kinds of weird noises. Bike had about 2500 miles on it when I got it and I am noticing all this strange "clunking" and "wherling" that is really starting to bug me.
1st - When I start the the bike, right after it catches, is the strange second long gear disengagement noise...Anybody else got this? Or did I by a turd.
2nd - Above about 15 mph, the rather loud "wind turbulance" noise from the front wheel, up through the fairing. Sounds like is would if the tire was rubbing just barely on the front fender( its not, I looked, took it off, etc)
3rd Up through the foot pegs/ belly pan area - any time I hit a bump sounds like something is loose and hitting the frame...Couldnt find anything, tightened up a loose chain, and still the "bumpity knock"
4th The transmission. Nothing about it is smooth. Have a FZ1 with 17000 miles on it and it makes shifting the "Big Girl" like a Semi Rig compared to the Porche. 1st gear sound like I am using a hammer to move the shift forks, and all the others are "clunkk!"
5th Back firing - Any time I roll off the throttle quick, about 2-3 seconds later I get a backfire.
Are these the "nature of the beast" ZX14 things or am I needing to dive into some serious service time.
Help/ Advice
What I would like to do if find another rider to compare it to, but here Oklahoma we ZX14 riders are pretty spread out.

Its hard to answer your questions without hearing the noises but I will try. I get a constant "whirring" sound at most speeds and also a "wind turbulence" sound. My transmission shifting noises depend on how I shift. Sometimes there is no "clunk" at all and sometimes there is a little. It mostly depends on how I shift. If I shift fast there is no clunk at all. I think most of the noises you are describing are normal except for the "something loose hitting the frame" sound. That isnt normal. I dont have that one at all. I am guessing you have a slip on or replacement exhaust. Do you? If so, that is why you are hearing the backfiring. It is there on all zx14,s but the stock muffler and cats block the noise. Once the exhaust is opened the backfiring is louder. That is normal. Its caused by the air injection system which injects air into the exhaust when the throttle is closed. Next time you are coasting to a stop pull in the clutch and you wont get any backfiring. You can fix that by blocking the air injection system. There is a thread here somewhere that tells how to do it. It isnt difficult. I have a slip on and get the backfiring. Personally I like the sound and if I am in a situation where I dont want to hear it, like being followed by a cop, I simply pull in the clutch. Anyway, before this turns into a book, your bike sounds pretty normal except for the frame clunk and your tranny will loosen up as you put on the miles and you will get better at shifting it. You couldn't have described it better. Mine has done this since day one. I have an extended velocity swingarm, and it still does it. Weird....wish I knew how to make that go away.

Dawg. What is the history of this bike. You got it cheap? From a local dealer - any warranty etc?
Did you test ride it before you bought it?
2500miles is pretty new.
Sounds like you bought a bike that someone wanted to get rid of.
Lots of posts here for all sorts of knocks, backfires etc. But you seem to have them all in one hit - and from what you are saying you have had them since you have had the bike.
Did you ask the original owner if this was normal?

You couldn't have described it better. Mine has done this since day one. I have an extended velocity swingarm, and it still does it. Weird....wish I knew how to make that go away.
+1 I have the same noise with my 06 running a 6" over with a McIntosh. If anyone knows what that noise is and a fix...please post. May just be the chain but not sure??

I have all those noises, plus a knocking sound at about 2500 rpm at light load(cruising to a parking spot in first or 2nd gear is when it's loudest. Took the bike to 3 dealers.
One couldn't hear the noise, the second said the chain was too loose(?), the third said it sounded normal. I don't think so, I've had plenty of bikes, some were real turds, but none as noisy as this.
This was the first brand new bike I have ever owned. Definitely the last new Kawasaki I will ever buy.
I only have about 4200 miles on it after 2-1/2 years. It's very frustrating to ride with all the klunks, knocks, etc.

zx14 noI have the same and only 2500kms on it.........i think the noises you hear from the bottom when you hit little bumps is the stand....i get it too and the noises from forks is wind noises from ram air and the transmission is huge on the 14's so its to be expected.

Whirring noise can come from the engine when the balancers are loose. The primary gear I believe is a straight cut for strength and not a bevel cut thus the noise. The chain can hit the bottom of swing arm under the right conditions over a bump. Also the side stand can move over a bump. The 14 has a larger than normal tranny and is constant mesh. The constant mesh can make alot of noise when the clutch is pulled in and the backlash is taken up when put into first. The Suzuki M109R makes many of the same noises.

+1 on the stand making that metal-to-metal clank on bumps.
I solved it by gluing a thin piece of rubber between the stand and frame on the little flat spot.

Ref: metal clank on bumps...
center or kickstand?
To me it feels/sounds like the shock is bottoming out(not the case though) or the swingarm is contacting the frame.
Kawabonzai, is there any way you can send me a pic of your fix? I'm just not getting a mental picture---hell the Army has most picture links blocked anyway. I'd owe you big time.

Thanks a lot all...Puts my minds at ease. I dont really mind all the noises/clunks/whirls and buzzes...As long as they are the standard issue "rattle trap" noises.
Now when I gots one noone else has got, or the same one as the fella head to the salvage yard...thats pucker factor level RED 1.
The only one noone commented on is the STARTER noise.
Anyone?

Well if you hear it just as the motor starts it's the cam chain , it only last a second or so ...It normal don't sweat it .. As the cam chain get a little longer with miles the cam chain adjustor will click into the next spot and the sound will go away ... Mine stopped making sounds at about 2500 miles ... Some take more miles than others .... But either way there is nothing wrong with it ... Now go riding and be happy ...

I 've had my '06 for about a week and what you are describing is identical to mine. EVERYTHING Identical. This is a brand new bike with one previous older owner who has babied it. My bike has 3600 miles on it. It has Yoshimura's (full system) without the PC Commander so I also get a backfire, though not always from a rapid deceleration. That transmission clucnking is very strong, almost like the syncro's are not engaging.
1st - I've dropped my idle way down and I still get a tremendous clunk shifting into 1st STANDING STILL!
2nd - Above about 15 mph, the rather loud "wind turbulance" noise from the front wheel, up through the fairing. Yes, I have this as well, thought it was a bad front wheel bearing. I get it even though I have the clutch pulled in.
3rd Up through the foot pegs/ belly pan area - any time I hit a bump sounds like something is loose and hitting the frame. This is a weird one. I have no idea what makes it occur.

Jesse, the tranny on mine is as smooth as butter.....the best shifting tranny I've ever used on a bike. It was a little clunky early on...but as you rack up some miles it should smooth out nicely. The front end noise is your front tire ( the stock rubber sucks, mine made a hella racket at your mileage)...its wearing down. A new tire and noise all gone :0 Don't know about the clunk though, mines never done that. With aftermarket pipes they all backfire abit.....I've heard a tre or block off plates will help that. Mines a non-issue for me My 11 couldn't hold a candle to my 14 in any way, shape or form. Felt like a heavy, slow, unrefined, poor-braking pig compared to the 14. Thats why its gone. Liked it for what it was....but a 14 it aint

I st ... the zx14 has BIG BIG gears made to take a beating ...It's going to make some noise when you put it in gear .....NORMAL ..
2 .... They all do it don't worry about it ..
3.... I have no clue...
4... Again NORMAL ... Use some Full Syn oil and it gets a little better ..
5... NORMAL .... They all pop around 3000 RPMs on decell ....

i hear noises too....they said buy a zx14 so thats what i did and never looked back!! I have had the same tranny noise since day one, full syn oil did help the 1st gear clunk, and since i put a full system on it i have had a pop on decel around 3k. no big deal only myself or passenger's hear it because no one else can keep up! LMAO Great bike love it no regrets

Dont misunderstand me...I am not complaining. Mearly asking if this is what is normal...So I can look for what is not normal.

They are only pulling your chain ....Just go with the flow ....You did get the info you needed ? if not feel free to PM me ..
