14 in a Smart?
Hey Crew.
I've got a 14 (PC3, flies out, Muzzy M10) and love it. I've also got a Smart car. I'm a pretty handy guy, and have considered transplanting a 14 motor out of a salvage bike into the Smart. (It's been done with a 'busa motor already..)
So, I'm here for you guys to shoot the idea full of as many holes as you can think of.. Is the clutch and trans up to the task of hauling 1800-ish pounds around? The motor would be in the same orientation as in a bike, so I don't see oil windage problems (like when you turn them sideways to make the crank north-south). My company makes kits to put LS1's in Miatas, so the fabrication is definitely within our capability. I'm just wondering what problems y'all see with the powertrain end of it.

The drawback of a small motor is the lack of TQ. So the motor can put down 180HP, but at HIGH RPM's - TQ is needed to pull weight .....unless you love replacing clutches.
Even a fully loaded 14 w/ two fat people on it would still be over 500LBS lighter.......

Hayabusa motors have always been in demand for car conversions, like in the Radical, a specially constructed Kit Car. I don't think the Smart chassis could cope though, probably go straight on at the first corner.
The UK TV show Top Gear took a Smart Brabus round their handling circuit and the outcome was that basically it didn't................handle.
The Smart understeered every time it was pushed into a curve. If you improved the grip it would probably fall over. With a couple of hundred bhp instead of fifty it would be lethal.
Might be entertaining in a straight line though.

Yeah but it sure did some awsome donuts! If the busa motor can handle it I'm sure the 14 motor can as well. I've also seen GSXR1000 kits as well and they have a lot smaller clutches. If you have clutch issues, go with HD springs or a lockup.

My suzuki samurai uses a 1.3L that made a claimed 60hp and 45 lb/ft of Tq when it was brand new. 400,000 miles later it's still pulling strong with no oil pressure, very little compression, and oversized tires on stock gearing . I dare say that my 14's engine would pull better than that POS that's in there right now, and the sami is heavier than a smart car.

If the gearing is setup right, a briggs 5hp will pull it.

The final gearing will have to be set up,
automotive 4 banger rarely develop more than 6-7000 rpm, and heavy flywheels.
so 11,000 and a light flywheel is a big difference.
It will need to be geared to idle around town at about 5000 rpm with a mass that large to move.
I would set it up to turn 3000 rpm at 10 miles per hour 1st gear.
The zx 14 really doesn't like a load below 2300 rpm in normal motorcycle trim and mass.

No videos, but yes, "Beast" is appropriate. 400+ easy HP, 2300 pound car. Aluminum V8 so the weight distribution is near stock. Goofy fast. Total bolt-in. (Insures as a Miata too..)

Have you seen the Miatas with the Shelby AC Cobra kits on them? They llok just like a minature Cobra, and with the LS1 Dyno queen engine in it, it would be fun as fuck to drive.

anyone that puts a GM engine in a car that resembles a cobra should be shot... if it's going to look like a cobra and have a small block, it better at least be a 347 stroker.

I once used my GS750 to pull my sisters Schirraco up a steep hill to my parents house when it died on her. Had plenty of power, just harder than hell to get rolling because the tow rope kept yanking me off balance. Once I got it over 20mph though heading for the steepest part of the hill it pulled that car like it was meant for it. Surprised the hell out of my doubting sister when I hit second gear at 6K and pulled all the way up that hill. My clutch was smelling up to high heaven though.
