Could someone compute my actual speed?
The other day after entering the interstate past alot of construction, I found myself with about a half mile of open space, so I dropped down into third, pulled a wheelie to about 110, and then tucked in with the throttle open for a while. Just before I had to slow down because of traffic, I looked at the speedometer, and it was sitting at 190-191. That is, at the very last hash mark without enumeration. This is the fastest I have ever went, but you all have informed me that the standard instrumentation is optimistic. With a 16 tooth front sprocket and a set of Michlien Pilot Powers on the bike, what would be a good calculation of my actual speed? I thought the speed limiter was supposed to kick in at 186 mph, but since it did not, I suppose I did not reach that speed. Your all's expert comments would be appreciated.

happy speedometer on the 14. my GPS showed it way of at speed. if you ride fast, it would serve you well to invest in GPS, or a speedohealer set accurately for your sprocket configuration.

I'm going to "guess" that you were going around 160-165 mph. The gearing change alone accounts for 6% or so in speedo error, and you can add that to the error that is built-in from the factory.

so with a 16t front sproket what would be the correct setting on the speedo healer.

That's about right. 4th gear is about 155-160 mph. Especially with 16 T. Sorry to deflate your speedometer. It was set by attorneys/engineers to keep us out of trouble. A speedohealer might help you in the future.

If you go to this site http://www.healtech-electronics.com They are the maker of Speedohealer, and look around there is an estimater for you % of correction you need based on tire size and gearing. Their estimates are within .05% of what my actual GPS speed is.

My speedohealer was set at -11.5 for 16/41 gearing. I had it checked by radar at various speeds and it was spot on.
I don't recall what we set it to when I changed the back sprocket from 41 to 43....seems like it was either -14.9 or 15.9 maybe. I would have to check the bike.

My estimation: If the speedo was accurate (which it isn't) you would have been doing around180mph with a 16tooth sprocket. Take off the 7% or so for the optimistic speedo and you have 167mph.
Setting the Speedo Healer to -11.5% would be about right.

just enter the -11.5% directly in.....
the speedohealer website lets you put the percent in and it gives you step by step instructions...the important part is the last step to make sure the value you inputed actually saves in the speedohealer. If it doesn't, you just wasted time and your speedo doesn't read right.

Many thanks to all of you. I knew that the speedo was optimistic, but did not think it was
over 10%. This still does not answer why the speed limiter did not kick in, unless the bike
somehow knows it is actually not exceeding 186 mph/300kmph.
