Wondering if what I did can harm the engine from reduced backpressure. I got conflicting opinions from 2 different Kawi dealers. One said doing this mod will "burn the valves from running too lean". The other said it will be fine, have at it.
Who is right? I hope it's the latter!!!

Your bike wont run leaner just better. Your fuel map didnt change and while cruising the O2 sensor adjusts the fuel mixture. Nothing has changed that will make it run leaner. In fact mine is running cooler than it did before the mod which certainly isnt a symptom or running lean. Worry less ride more !!!!

One guy cut the coupling end of the left side exhaust and had it welded shut. The other guy had the exhaust cut at the bubble and had it welded, but he had to take his whole system off to get this done. The first option is the easiest ,since you wouldnt have to pull the whole exhaust off .the two guys are very cool and i think i am gonna get them to hook me up. i am gonna try to post some pics as soon as i get my kids to show me how.

This afternoon I pulled off the left side gutted exhaust and found a can that was the right size to fit over the outlet. It was a small can of spray cookling oil...ha !! Cut off the bottom leaving it about 2 inches long. Installed it over the outlet and fastened it on with a hose clamp. A real GHETTO fix !!!! Anyway, took it out for a ride and it was just too loud with all the exhaust flowing through one gutted can. Didnt sound bad just way too loud. So put the gutted muffler back on for now. There sure was a shitload of air coming out of that one muffler !!!

Wouldn't running all the exhaust through a single unmodified can be bad? After all, the bike was designed to vent through TWO pipes of a certain diameter, not one... Unless of course that one pipe was opened up to let double the exhaust gas pass through it.

The right side can has two 5/8 inch holes drilled in them. It sounds great and the bikes fly.Your bike is louder because you have four holes driiled and the tube cut out, i think.

Here are a couple of pics of what the INSIDE of a ZX-14's cans look like after removing the center pipe:

(Seen DEEP inside is the hole drilled BEFORE I chose to remove the center pipe)

Louder, yes. But not TOO loud. It's more a deep, throaty grumble than a harsh roar like some pipes. Sounds FANTASTIC in both my opinion and all others that have heard it. I HIGHLY recommend the mod for anyone not wanting or affording after market pipes.

Sorry to dig up an old thread here but unlike my old bike there arent many that have gutted their stock zx-14 pipes. If anyone who has done this is still around can you give me some advice? I have cut all the way around the center pipe but it is welded in further down the tube. How did you get it out. Just wiggle it until the weld breaks?

CHECK OUT!!!
this is my old thread, check the pipes shortened for 2/3 of the length.
+ 2 HP on the dyno and a hell of a sound.

this is a real + for people who can not afford a whole system or just want to keep the OEM pipes.

it is really sweet for street use, the sound is incredible.

the bike has already +6k on the dash with these pipes no problem at all!!!

i didnt take out any pipe, do take notice that the end tip (1) as it goes to the front will be devided in 3, so if you cut the can it will have 3 exit holes

you will need a real good cutter to pass through the pipes but it is all worth it!!!

This is what I did to my stock exhaust.
Removed the caps, Cut 11' off from the rear, cut the 3 pipes inside at a 45 degree angle and reinstalled the caps and riveted them back on. It sounds really good and it was free. I also put what I removed on a scale and each side was 4.8lbs.

Front

After 45 degree cut

Finished

I'm saving up for my Brocks SMeg and gutted/cut my TRC cans because they weren't loud enough. I know i have to work on my bitch strips, give me a few weeks on the thing.

Not a huge sound difference at idle. 2-3krpm is definitely louder. From there to redline it screams. It'll hold me over til I can get my Brocks.
