How do I gut the ZX-14 Stock Exhaust

Has anyone modified the stock exhaust canister on a ZX-14? I have just cut through the 3 small spot welds on the end cap and removed it only to find a sealed inner unit. What's the easiest way to open it up to get to it's "innards".
Does anyone have a schematic of the canister or an exploded view?
My goal is a stock look with a louder sound. A slight power drop (if it happens) is unimportant to me.
Thanks for any help!

dude i tried that, it sounded worst then a civic with a 12" coffee can exhaust. get slip on's at the bare minimum. Get a brocks alien head or a muzzy m10 like myself and u can gain horsepower and shave 22-25 pounds off the bike. big big difference

I figured as much. However, once opened and gutted, I can worry about tuning the sound to taste using a section of baffeled straight pipe WITHIN the stock canister. I'm just lookin for the easiest way to get "in there" without the blood, sweat and tears of trial and error. lol

My eventual goal is a stock LOOK with a custom sound. Once I get a tone I'm happy with I'll have the bike dynoed and mapped to restore any lost power.

I'm running a set of slip ons that qwick built and sold me. I'm most likely going to end up taking them off because i can't get on base with them. Another guy with a 14 has a brocks smeg and can't get his on base either lol. Looks like when i go with an exhaust it will be one that's not very loud since this is my daily driver. If anyone is interested in them, I'll post a video of what they sound like and sell them for what i have in them. (just took the video, but you can't tell much because i didn't have anyone to hold the camera for me.) I believe that Kevin said that brock played around with them and got 7hp out of them on his dyno. He also said that with no mapping, his bike made around 3-4 hp and 3 lb/ft of torque. Not a lot of performance increase, but if you're just looking for sound, looks, and weight savings they're cool pipes. I get complements everywhere that i go, but the way that cops are here in san diego, combined with the base police is forcing me to get rid of them.

It's quite easy to do. Take a 1/2 inch drill bit, about 15-18 inches in length and just drill into the end piece. It takes some muscle but once you break through the first bit of metal you can get in there pretty deep. When starting to drill start with a smaller bit and then go to a bigger one. Exhaust sounds lower with more hp.

Chad,

Pull those flies, then install a PC3 with the Muzzy slip-on map that I was running. You'll notice a big difference in performance! And it'll idle and run much smoother. PM me with your new address so that I can send you the packing material so that you can finish the baffles. I've ran the stock pipes, my Qwick pipes and the new Short Meg full system from Brock and if I had it to do all over again, I would have installed the baffles and kept my Qwick pipes... The dual shorty Drag Pipes looked cool and seemed to get a lot of attention. Never received another compliment about the bikes exhaust after removing them either. And they do look even better in person than in pictures.
Your bike looks great! I'd install the baffles & packing before I spent any $$$ on a new system.

Kevin

Bawls- Suggest to your other 14 rider that brocks offers a plug for that pipe and it reduces the sound enough that he will be able to get on base.....Definately. There doesn't seem to be a lot of folks on this message board that mentions the plug but I have one and it does reduces the sound quite a bit!

Drill inside the center pipe through the baffle that's a few inches inside it or through the outer metal "ring" surrounding the center pipe?

Don't quite follow you as I'm drinking a good California Merlot--

Take off your lower exhaust pipe and stick the muffler/baffler end up into the air. Point it towards the moon or sun (if it is day time) The end (towards the header) of the pipe will now be on the floor. A cement floor is required as compared to a expensive oak strip floor in your living room. Take the muffler/exhaust in one hand and drill into the opening through the circle of metal. You might want to start out with an 1/8 bit and then work it out to a larger opening with a bigger bit. It's should be handled with delicatesy as if it were your young girlfriend out on your second date and her parents would kill you if she cried.. Muscle is required so I recommend a sleeveless shirt peferably with a big S on the front. A shot of tequila will give you more power with your drill. Did I mention a hydralic drill? Ah, yes, you will need one of those. Have your wife or girlfriend standing there to see how macho you are. Now start drilling. And Drilling. And drilling. Eventually... it will break through and you will scream with rejoice. Your wife/girlfriend will come over and feel the muscle on your arm. Now repeat after me.. You will then say.... "It was nothing". And smile. Now make sure it's a Tom Cruise smile and not a faggy smile. Woment know the difference. Now switch to a bigger bit and repeat the same process. Don't forget your shot of tequila in between bits. It will give you more power. Eventually on your second or third or fourth bit you will get all the way down and will scream with orgasm ( no pun intended). You will be happy and your wife/girlfriend will be happy. Then pick her (or him) up in your arms and take them to a quiet spot in the garage and show them how macho you are.

As I write this I remember that it was harder than I thought. Hope this helps--

Well I did it. Using the four "fake" holes on the rear of each stock canister as a template, I traced the holes onto the inner back plate of the exhaust canister. Then I removed the rear covers by cutting the three spot welds on each with a dremmel cut off wheel.
I proceede to drill out the back plates according to the markings I made using a unibit. After drilling all four holes in each back plate, I turned my attention to the rear covers. I enlarged each of the four factory holes in the covers by a factor of two (doubled their size) to prevent the exhaust coming out of the four new holes in the back plates from making a farting/whistling noise as in passed through the four outer holes in the covers. If both sets of holes were the same size, the exhaust gasses coming out of the canister would expand in the gap between the rear plates and the covers and when exiting, would sound like a fart. I know because I re-assembeled them this way FIRST and did NOT like the sound they made.
When all the drilling and filing was done, I replaced the rear covers and secured them with pop rivets (three each pipe where the spot welds were) and fired the bike up. It sounds pretty good! VERY similar to my friends bike with a Muzzy pipe on it. The bike definitely spews more noxious fumes though as the exhaust gas smell seems MUCH stronger.
If I get time I'll post some pictures.

Saving up for a 4 into 1 exhaust but was bored last night so went to work on my 06 stock mufflers. Drilled a few holes through the rear ring but it sucked. Too tinny and not a pleasant sound. Sounded like a muffler with a hole in it. Wait...thats what it was.

Then I mounted a 1 5/8" bi-metal hole saw on my 1/2" drill. From the rear slid the hole saw over the exit pipe in the middle of the muffler and drilled through the ring around the pipe. Grabbed the pipe end with a pliers, twisted and pulled and out it came. Did both of them and fired her up. Wooohooo !!! It is awesome !!! Very low growl with no "tinny" sound at all. My other bike is a GSXR1000 with a slip on and the sound is very similar. Cant believe how good the sound is. Not too loud with a low rumble. Took it out for a ride and it runs great. The idle jumped up a little so had to turn it down. Anyway, it is a great improvement and it was free !!

DAMN, DRATS, $HIT !!!! I just tried that and guess what? After drilling, while withdrawing the drill, I hear a "klink" and, you guessed it, the hole saw fell off INSIDE the muffler!!!!
I tried EVERYTHING and can't get it out!
Put all back together and fired it up, ran and sounded great. Only drawback is that on some harsh bumps, I hear the hole saw rattle around in there. Guess eventualy I'm going to HAVE to buy a set of pipes now. GRRRRrrrrrrr!!!!

There are 2 guys around Memphis that have only 1 stock pipe on the right side.1 of the bikes stock can is about 8 inches shorter,it has a low growl like a Two Bros. pipe.It looks and sounds great,i found out he has a pciii ,track map and 15/42 gearing. The bike will fly.The other guy has the same set up and his bike is very fast too.He told me that they have block off plates where the left side exhaust went. The guy with the short pipe has a 07 gsxr exhaust canister he is working on that will fit a zx14.

Well ,just got corrected the gearing is 16/42 not 15/42. I think i am gonna get a 1 5/8 hole saw and do this first ,before i try the block off plate .I am not a drag racer so every tenth means nothing to me YET.

Get a bi-metal hole saw and hang on tight !! It cuts through pretty fast and you will be pleasantly surprised by the sound. The AIS rumble and popping is really awesome too. If you pull in the clutch when coasting to a stop it doesnt pop.

Wow...good idea. Do you know what they used for a block off plate ??? It looks like it would be pretty easy to do.
