stater bike
hey every 1, I'm thinking of buying a bike soon, but since this will be my first one I'm not sure what to get as a starter. I'm 5'11 280 lbs. I've been told to get a 600 as a starter but in the same breath I've been told I'm way too big. I was thinking of getting a zx12 or 14 but it might be too much bike for me. I would appreciate any imput. thanx.

600. You're not tall. I rode a 636 for 4 years and I'm the same weight, but taller. You will ride the 14 like a 600 if you get many years on a 6 under your belt first.

If you're set on a 14 than make sure you get a '06 or '07 and keep the flies in for at least 5k miles.
In reality, you should start on a used 600 for at least 4k-5k miles. After that, get what you want. If you want to start on a big bike to compesate for your size, make sure its an old liter bike or big bore bike. Find a old zx-11, cbr1100, or something like that. A 10 year old liter bike that only puts out 130-140hp but still has the needed torque will do you good.

A ZX-14 is NOT a starter bike !!!!! These things can accelerate faster than an Indy Car, and if you have to think about what is happening and what you are going to do about it .... It will be too late! Please get your experience on something more forgiving. ;-)

... yet another thread about a first time wanting a 14 as a first bike, there seems to be one of these threads every other month for the last year I've been here. The 14 is deceptively easy to ride at first, but the thing becomes a raging beast when you open that throttle up. You will either fall into the camp of guys who wreck or scare themselves so bad they never get to fully appreciate what they own or how to ride it properly. Start smaller, or better yet buy the 14 AND a starter bike if you can afford it. Learn to ride on hard on the smaller bike and then apply it to the 14. IF you got the money...

I rode a 600 for about 3 years then went to the 14. It was nimble at the low end in stock form. Once the flies opened up, it was a completely different experience. I think if you can keep the 14 below 6000 rpms (06-07 models) until you get used to riding, you'll be ok gettin it for a starter bike. It responds more like a 600 at those rpms. I rode my 14 for about 1200 miles before I even thought about pullin the flies. Once I did, there was no turnin back. It really uleashes the beast! Good luck with whatever you decide

Speaking from experience 600 is the way to go for a first bike. I am preatty young and wanted to start off on a 14 but a few elder people with busa's and 14's advised me other wise. So i started on a 500 honda ascott, if you know what that is.....old slow single cyl. Honda i think it was a 1982.....rode that for 2 years then bought a 600 suzuki, put 13,000 miles on that bike then made the step to a 14. You can really learn alot on a 600 for the first couple of years. On a 14 once you open it up there is no looking back and it is no joke it will shit and get and not think twice about it! They are great bikes you just have to respect them and what awsome power they can unleash. Whatever you do congrats on getting into the sport of motorcycling and ride safe!

hi all,
first time poster here.
i hope i don't catch hell for this but that's what i ended up doing; i purchased an '08 zx14 for my first street bike. my rational was i already had good experience with bikes and quads of the off road nature and 9 sec et's were what i typically run in the stang(8 sec soon), so rather than start small to just upgrade later, why not get what i really want from the get go.
i found you just have to respect the amount of power you're sitting on and don't get caught up in the moment riding with more experienced riders, you can get in over your head quickly. plus it seems to be more rpm related than throttle related. floor it below 5000 and the acceleration is mild. above 7000, just roll into it slowly. keep the bike in 6th most of the time and things don't happen too quickly.
this is coming from someone with a total of 405 miles on his tailbone on streetbikes (5 on 14 concourse, 400 on zx14) but i like to think i'm old enough now to preserve my life enough to not do anything too stupid or unsafe. hopefully all goes well. i guess as long as you see me posting, the heart is still pumping.
oh, and i'll be going for my license test in nj in a couple weeks. everyone takes the test on a honda ruckus scooter 'cause they say it's next to impossible to pass on an actual bike. well i'm going to give it a try on the 14. i've been practicing at a test center after hours and i have been able to make the turns with the 14. the bike seems to handle really well at low speeds so as long as i keep my nerves in check, hopefully i can pass.
