Help. Which Exhaust?

I have a 2008 Sapphire Blue ZX-14 with about 1200 miles on the clock. At this point the bike is completely stock and would like to begin making modifications. I purchased a Power Commander which is on the way. Now I need to decide on an exhaust which I'm hoping will help cool the engine as a side benefit, as its running extremely hot. I plan to have the exhaust thermal coated inside and out.

I am currently looking at the various Brock and Muzzy full exhausts, and could use some guidance in trying to make sense of the various models. I have heard some of the exhausts on youtube, but you cannot really get a sense for how loud these systems really are through this means. I like the sound of the shortmeg or alienhead, but am concerned that these will be obnoxiously loud and cause too much attention from law enforcement when open in up. I'm looking for both power and sound, and I know there is usually a tradeoff. Is there any comparison information available in terms of the dB levels of the various exhausts? Any suggestions on which exhaust will give me the most power without waking the neighbors?

Also, I found at least one site which offered significant discounts on Muzzy exhausts. I
have not found similar deals for Brock. Are there Brock resellers which have deals on Brock exhaust or are they typically sold at full price.

Thanks.

go with the brocks. the street meg or short meg are my favorits. the short meg or alien will be the loudest. the map support from brocks is very good.

If you spend most of your time on the street,go with the Brock's gen-3. You wont lose much torque if any over the std street meg and they aren't as loud. The street meg to me is the best ex on the market for street/strip heavy on the strip. If you stay out of the throttle until you get out of the neighber hood you'll do fine. The sound of the short meg's are harsh and musical but loud. One other thing about the Gen-3 they sound alsum and depending on the type can you get look great on the 14's. Bill....

Brocks makes good stuff, top notch levels of fit, finish, and power. Same goes for Muzzy's, which is neck n neck with Brocks, but is generally more affordable. Top power maker currently for the '08s is Muzzy's M10/M14 exhaust muffler combo, which goes for $630-799 from starcycle.com. Here's the link: http://www.starcycle-usa.com/servlet/Categories The only catch is that there website is completely hosed up, all there descriptions are wrong and you have to go by the part number that Muzzy's website lists to find the "true" M14/M10 combo. Here is that list link: http://search.cartserver.com/search/search.cgi?cartid=a-6265&category=kawasaki_exs&keywords=%27ZX-14%27&maxhits=100&go=GO%21

I would recommend first checking out EBay, I just saw a M10/M14 combo with a carbon fiber muffler on there a couple days ago for $500. Just make sure that its a M14 headers, because they have made alot of versions, and out of all the headers made for the 14's, ONLY the M14's are proven to outperform the badass 2008 14 stock header.

The M10 is a tapered tube designed specifically to outperform in the midrange AND topend, and no other manufacturer so far has claimed to beat it in a head to head. Trust me, its very rare to get both a better high end (even if the diff is only 1 or 2 hp) and a better midrange hit.
Or you can just use the stock headers-which as stated are great power makers even with the 3rd cat inside them- along with a good set of slipons.

Sound wise most reputeable makers have some kind of muffle or baffle you can buy to decrease the noise level, make sure you enquire from the maker directly about that. And get your ass to a bike show or bike gathering and use your ears. Any 1000 sport bike will sound similar enough to your 14 with the same muffler that you can decide what sounds right before spending the money- just remember, the 14 will have a deeper growl than a 1000, so dont even try to listen to a 600: apples to oranges.

Coolingwise: any aftermarket exhaust will help enough with the heat that thermal coating is not required. The biggest thing you can do is put some miles on that thing. As has been reported on this site over and over again, over the course of a few thousand miles the bike will break in and losen its tolerances up, which pays off in more HP and ALOT less heat. I've been wrenching on bikes and cars for decades, and it still caught me by surprise how much the 14 requires to breakin, and how big a difference that breakin makes. Reminds me of when the GM LS1 engine first came out...

i have the 07 14 with a pc3 and yoshi trc full and flies out. at first the yoshi system sounded pretty damn weak. i didnt realize that there was a baffle in. once removed it sounded pretty damn good. nice aggressive sound and while idling it wasnt to loud. im happy with the system especially at $700 bucks shipped. my bike never ran to hot accept for the first 400 miles, with the trc its usually at the middle or one bar above (i live in fla). here are some pics of the system. sorry no sound clip.

I think Brocks is good. If u r in the states, u can try them out. I think they are very customer service oriented. At least if u need any help, u can find them easily compared to me being overseas. Personally I dun think the Gen 3 is very loud at idling. It sounds like its stock exhaust being hollowed. It sounds a little loud on cold start due to the auto choke. after it stablise, it should be fine.

Cheers.

Thank you all for the responses. I think I've narrowed it down to the Brock Gen 3/StreetMeg or the Muzzy M14/M10.

Does anyone know where to get a deal on Brock Exhausts?

Thanks

You sound like a accountant. Don't over analyze. You can't it both ways-- No matter which exhaust you buy you wouldn't notice the difference in horsepower on the street anyway. Save your money and get a Kawasaki tattoo behind the back of your neck. That way you will look faster and louder just standing still--

But if you must get a new exhaust.... Gen 3.

Let me help with the last decision ... go for the M14/M10 combo. I'm loving mine. Got +14.5 HP by doing the mods listed in my sig. Awesome ride now.

Most have mention the Brock's SMEG but you can also get a silencer plug w/either the smeg or alien head and it reduces the robust sound and eliminates the decel pop. So w/ Brock- you have bit more choices as the style/sound you want to portray. Making a statement, and balls out performance?- keep the plug out
Trying to riding incognito, making sure your passenger's doesn't complain about the noise?- Keep the plug in.
