Wow .. Touchy subject ..

Lee, the paint is not the touchy subject...

I think when you imply that someone doesn't pay attention to detail, that's more of an issue. Especially if that person makes a living building racing motors for some of the fastest bikes on the planet.

How about this one:

Yes, that is The Fastest Non-Streamliner motorcycle on the planet. 278.6 mph in the standing mile. And, yes, Steve built that motor as well.

At the end of the day it is your "preference" to paint the motor. And it is my preference not to care about the paint. Is anyone really right or wrong here? No.

But if you sling sh!t, you just might get some on you....right? At least that is the way it has always worked out for me...

Shane
I'm not slinging shit Shane .. To me a half painted motor is not finshed .. Bead blasting alum leaves it open to atack from the elements and in a short time it will look like ass .. It will not change how it runs ..

It might be half finished painted, but its finished being built.. Again don't you think the people who stripped it are the ones to re paint it, and again i don't paint. So in this case my attention to detail is half ass i assume? What about ARP ultra torque on all the important fasteners, or motor oil to hydraulic the blind holes and break the cases.. You decide !!

knecum here is what i said that started this hole mess..Shame asked why he should paint the upper case and i replied "Well appearance would be first on my list of reasons .. Second would be since it was bead blasted would be what happens to alum exposed to moisture ect .. If it were me and it's not i would coat it with a thin coat of Epoxy engine enamel .. Thinner the better because it will hold up better with less chance of chipping .. If you ask me the engine builder should have done that before returning it to the owner "..

knecum Please note i never questioned you building skills or you records..I'm a long time follower of your work and know full well of your history building bike motors.. My post was simply to have Shane paint the upper Case .. I don't care who didn't paint it , only that it should have be painted either by millenium , you or Shane.. Sure it is only a detail item but details count ..

I am so exhausted over this paint issue that it may be a setback to the build.

Hey Shane. Don't let anyone pi$$ on your parade. People are entitled to an opinion, but the only reason
they CAN comment is cause you've put in the time and effort to let us know how the build is progressing.
I, like many have taken inspiration and information from this thread and will continue to.
When you pass the line @ 200+ at Maxton, do let us know if anyone SEES the colour of the cases!

Thanks, I appreciate the comments. I know that this bike is not exactly a perfect fit anymore for the "demographic" here, since most guys are street riding. But it is what it is, and I hope that others can still benefit from the thread. Even though it may seem like it is all racing stuff at this point, there are definitely things that apply for streetbikes as well.

What I have noticed is that as the bike has become more race-oriented, the interaction in the thread has become a lot less. I see that a lot of people are still viewing it, though.

I haven't really set any goals for the bike, but I would certainly like to exceed 200 mph at Maxton on it. It went 193 and change on the stock motor, in the heat. I am very rusty now as I have only made one LSR pass in the last 21 months...and that was a leisurely 184 mph pass in order to test the stability of Racheal's bike. So, that is definitely going to be a factor until I get some seat time.

Ok but the bike isn't even finished yet, so until it is and you can actually see it in person, you can't comment on any details of the bike/engine.wiring/plumbing.. That count until its a finalized build, then comment all you want...You follow me? It was a picture of the engine, did you see the pics of the bike without the engine? Is he suppose to zip tie all the wiring real nice as it was sitting waiting a motor, after all, its all in the details.. My details and responsibility are the engine building..That's it!!

Ok end of the subject .!!!!..OF!!... If you ask me the engine builder should have done that before returning it to the owner "..

No. No he has to use pink on Racheals 14 :-) use some duct tape for that tuff look. j/k

The engine pic's of the parts etc is the details.. I like the unpainted look. Where is the cool billet clutch cover you had?? That was one of your favorite bolt on parts.

I still have the billet cover, but it needs machined in order to clear a sidewinder exhaust. Ironically, I have thought about painting that cover.

I still haven't decided on which exhaust I am going to use, but it might not be a completely off-the-rack setup. Something tells me I will be talking to Area P soon.

Thanks again for that 12R cam chain tensioner!

I mistakenly thought I had posted the onboard video of Bill Warner's 278 mph run. Well, here it is:

Watch how hard it is still accelerating over 250 mph! Amazing bike/rider/engine combo...

Moving at around 408 feet per second, with around a half mile to shut down...pretty crazy stuff. That is either the definition of having balls, or being insane....or maybe both?

The Competition CNC cylinder head is done, and in my hands.

I will add more later, but here are a few pictures:

The basic specs of this head are:

Stage 3 CNC Porting
1mm O/S Valves
Larger Bronze Valve Seats
Bronze Valve Guides
Bored for Hayabusa Buckets (to use high-lift cams. Kawasaki buckets are too small for anything much over .400 lift)
APE Valve Springs & Titanium Retainers
Port-Matched Intake Manifolds

This head is very similar to Rickey Gadson's head which made 254 STD hp on his dyno, on his 2 x 5 motor. My state of tune will likely be more conservative, so I might make a little less. His motor is set up for dragracing, but I want to hold mine at WOT for 1.5 miles.

As usual, great service from Competition CNC. Jim will take the time to explain things to you, and he gives you options.

http://www.competitioncnc.com

I also have a high volume oil pump gear on the way, and will post pics when it arrives. I also got the Muzzy billet oil pump cover, since the stocker apparently has a tendancy to leak and/or flex at high rpm in certain cases.

Shane

Steve, did you guys get a chance to take a few valves out and get a good look in there before you put it on the engine?

Thanks, it's been a lot of work...probably maintaining the thread and taking the pics is nearly as much work as what I've done on the bike, lol. Money-wise, I'd say that the last setup I had, the bike had about $7500 in mods to it. The BST's, Ti pipe, Oil pan, swingarm and quick access cover were the biggest investments. Fortunately I didn't pay retail for any of that stuff. But I did go through a lot of parts along the way. When I look at what my coworkers have invested in their Harley's, I don't feel so bad.

For me a big part of the enjoyment comes from planning out the mods, and playing with the setup. I have thousands of hours invested in researching and documenting different aspects of the setup. I like the "imagining" process. Of course I do enjoy racing the bike, but I know I will never be as talented as some of the guys on this board. I just don't devote enough time to it to get that good.

I'm glad to see that people are still reading the thread and following the project as it has grown. I hope this new chapter will be just as rewarding as the first, and that the bike and myself will go faster than ever!
