The motor is done:
Now that Steve has done his work, the hard part for me starts. Basically I have to completely rebuild the bike from almost the ground up:
I am also working on a 12R right now, for something to ride at the dragstrip over the summer. So, that is getting more attention for the time being. I really miss riding my own bike at the dragstrip. I am working overtime trying to come up with the money for the little things needed to make the 14 run once it is together. You know, like an exhaust system....and it might even need a swingarm.
I don't want to disappoint anyone, but I need to take my time and put this bike back together right. So, I am not really sure when it will turn a wheel. I guess, "when it's ready". I'll continue to update the thread as progress occurs.

Lee, what do you think the benefits would be, ouside of appearance?
The reason that I ask is that I have two other motors with bare cylinders and haven't really seen an issue. On this one, I thought about painting it. But then I figured that at best the paint would be a heat insulator, and at worst a peeling mess. I can see paint being more of an issue on a street bike that gets exposed to the elements.
I am not sure what kind of finish they use from the factory, but it appears to be some tough stuff.
This kind of brings up another question...why does Millenium have to strip the entire block in order to do a bore and plate? Is that part of some sort of "hot tank" stripping procedure?

Well appearance would be first on my list of reasons .. Second would be since it was bead blasted would be what happens to alum exposed to moisture ect .. If it were me and it's not i would coat it with a thin coat of Epoxy engine enamel .. Thinner the better because it will hold up better with less chance of chipping .. If you ask me the engine builder should have done that before returning it to the owner ..

All the details of this motor...all the pics of the parts...and your only comment is that it should have been painted?
As far as what the builder "should have done". Well, I am the customer. I expected no paint, and I got no paint. I am happy. However, I am sure that if I requested paint, I would have gotten it. As a customer, engine paint would be high on your priority list, and I can respect that.
I put painting these cases a little lower on the priority scale than the $2 of paint that I use on my fairing panels, honestly. But, to each their own...

Damn that motor looks sweet...
On painting the case`s I could see there being a problem with oxidation of the bare alum. but since it`s mostly inside and at the track it may be ok to leave as is... Wipe it down with a little wd40 or something before install and leave it be.....I`ve had fully bead blasted case`s and really like the looks.....

Yeah, I mean I saw the cases when they came back. I didn't care to have them painted or I would have mentioned it to the builder. A painted upper case is not the kind of "detail" that I am really concerned with. In fact, I would expect the builder to ask me before painting the cases.
Steve Knecum built the motor, and I know his attention to detail. I have seen it firsthand. I have also seen the reliable and record-setting performance of his work. If it sounds like I am singing his praises, to some extent I am. I have had very good experience dealing with Steve.

Hey look no paint!!! It must be habitual!!!.. Don't you think it should be Milleniums job to paint it? After all they stripped it!!! Anways im not a painter so unless you want runs in your paint, you would have someone else paint it, i build engines not paint.. If you want you can still paint it, i know people who painted their engine assembled and it looks great.. So Shane im sorry its not painted.. are you ok with that?? Oh i forgot.. you are ok with it.. someone else isn't!! Every engine that leaves my shop has each valve adjusted to the exact clearence as all the rest.. But no paint!!

yeah because it really bothers me that i didnt paint it, and everything out of your shop gets painted and dag nabbit millenium should have, and i'm going to talk to them about the lack of detail that they overlook, cause i cant' paint,, but they can cause the replate cylinders, so what do you think 3/8 nap roller?

Well i never tried a roller before but it might work .. lol.. Anyway get a few cans of Epoxy Engine paint and play with it on an old engine .. Light , quick coats from 6 to 8 inches , let each coat flash to tacky feel ( tacky to touch ) and repeat .. Most people rush the job and that causes problems with runs ..You can put a light coat and go have dinner then put on another coat on .. 2 to 3 coats will do just fine .. You really don't want heavy coats because it can and will peel or chip .. All you want or need is to have total coverage of the part ..

Lee, the paint is not the touchy subject...
I think when you imply that someone doesn't pay attention to detail, that's more of an issue. Especially if that person makes a living building racing motors for some of the fastest bikes on the planet.
How about this one:
Yes, that is The Fastest Non-Streamliner motorcycle on the planet. 278.6 mph in the standing mile. And, yes, Steve built that motor as well.
At the end of the day it is your "preference" to paint the motor. And it is my preference not to care about the paint. Is anyone really right or wrong here? No.
But if you sling sh!t, you just might get some on you....right? At least that is the way it has always worked out for me...

We've done a lot of research, for sure. In some ways I wish that the 14 platform was as mature as the Busa. The best combinations haven't been completely sorted yet, and there is a lot of development work still to be done, imo.
There aren't too many naturally aspirated 14 engines like this one. There is an extra challenge in getting the power on motor alone. I'm anxious to see how the combination turns out.

Hey Shane. Don't let anyone pi$$ on your parade. People are entitled to an opinion, but the only reason
they CAN comment is cause you've put in the time and effort to let us know how the build is progressing.
I, like many have taken inspiration and information from this thread and will continue to.
When you pass the line @ 200+ at Maxton, do let us know if anyone SEES the colour of the cases!
