While I could upgrade the fuel system to run E85, I'm not sure that is the route that I am going to take. This is a race bike, so street riding is not a concern.

What does concern me about E85 is that the amount of ethanol in the fuel can apparently vary significantly from pump to pump. Depending on what my final compression is, and depending on the quality at the pump, it might get expensive.

Ok, final experiment:

Pardon the poor finish & holes...I've never dealt with carbon fiber before. Basically, it is unforgiving. It did cut with a jigsaw with no problems, and I used a hand drill.

I would suggest a drill press, because if the bit walks a little, you are done. Also I suggest eye protection, gloves, and a proper respirating device...I'm not even certain of what type of device that is yet. I actually held my breath and walked away to breath when I was done.

Shane

Shane, did you leave the carbon fiber strips?

No, never made any new ones. I will do something though as I have plans for a modified subframe.

Thanks, I am wanting to do something with mine. I don't want to spend $750 on a custom one, but I have some ideas.

I bought a spare, cheap (I think I paid $75+SH on Ebay)...so no big loss if I mess it up.

That is exactly what I was thinking, I found a complete one on ebay for less than $50 shipped, so I can afford to experiment.

Yes, #1 or #4 is the normal wire used for a tach signal.

ya i have heard that as well, but ive never heard of anyone having a problem with it, hell a shop down the road just made 1054hp in a supra on e70 so im sure ill be fine with e70 or e85, or what ever comes from the pump lol

Just some general info on the new setup:

Engine Builder: Steve Knecum
Displacement: 1534cc's
Compression: 14.5:1+
Cylinder Head: Competition CNC Stage 2 Port, O/S valves, Hayabusa buckets
Cams: Above .410 lift on intake and exhaust
Throttle Bodies: 47MM
Rods: Carrillo
Transmission: R&D Pro Cut
Crank: +5mm stroke by Marine Crank
Target HP: 245+ SAE
Target Bike Weight: 440 lbs, race ready

Anyway, at this point it is a waiting game. Case and pistons go out to Millenium on Tuesday. Crank is about 4 weeks or so from completion. Hayabusa buckets out to Competition CNC on Monday (they have the head already). Cams are done.

One step closer, the +5mm crank is done. This crank had some mild journal damage, and I paid $150 for it. I figured there was no reason to weld up the mint one that came out of the bike.

The cylinder head is still under the knife, and there are a lot of odds and ends that need purchased. And one more biggie, the rods.

I will be making a trip up to take a look at the pieces in person, and I will get some more pics when I am there. I have worked with the builder, and some other knowledgeable folks in trying to come up with a solid combination. Unfortunately, not that many 14 motors seem to be making really big "motor" hp...so it is somewhat uncharted territory. The Busa has had a lot more NA development than the 14.

The good news is that things seem to be slowly changing, and more options are appearing.

Once the engine is done, I have a ton to do on my end. Including completely reassembling the bike (incuding the chassis), installing the engine, tuning, etc...

A couple of updates:

1) The head is just about completed, only a few days to go. Porting, seats, guides, busa buckets, all done. Valve job was underway this last Friday.

2) Cases came back from Millenium. They are going out to Coby Adams for some work to the oiling system now. I would have sent them out earlier, but I had not researched that aspect of the build yet. In many instances, I am sure that the stock oiling system will be fine...but I wanted a little bit of extra insurance/comfort.

As for the crank, I just put a "wanted" ad up in the classifieds, and a few people responded. A used crank is always a risk, but Marine checked it and it was OK to use for a core. Keep in mind that last I knew, it was 12 weeks to get a stroker done through Marine.

What oiling system mods are you having done to the bike.

Wow 12 weeks for a stroker crank, I was figuring 4 weeks for that now I might have to revaluate when I get this project started..............thanks for the info.

I couldn't tell you exactly what they do at this point. They probably do something similar to what is done on the Busa. Maybe opening up some passages and restricting others. I called them asking if there was anything to be done to the cases, and was told that they did some mods for reliability. So, I decided to go ahead and send them in...if anyone would know, it would be Adams. Once they receive the cases, I will get a more technical description of the work.

Chris Jones also does some work on the cases he does for turbo bikes.

I will have better info on the overall oiling system by next week. There are some other items outside of the cases that i am looking at. As I say, the stock system might be fine in many/most cases...but I want to cover my bases.

I've recently done some legwork in this area, and I've found out a couple things. Before I even get started, to those referenced, please forgive me if I'm wrong, but this is what I've taken away.

Dwayne at Cycle Concepts talked to me for a while about the flaws of kawasaki's oiling systems. He said the main problem isn't pressure, but it's lack of flow. He does modifications to increase flow (not just turning up the pressure, but increasing the amount of oil passing through). He modifies the crank and cases I believe.
However, the problem is twofold, not only is there not enough flow, but, Kawasaki's share one oil feed for 2 bearings. On all the suzuki's each bearing has it's own feed.

I also spoke with Adams about the zx14's oiling system. They too do modifications to the cases and crank to increase oil flow. I didn't get into as much detail with Garron on the phone, but I know they do modifications and it's proven to help the zx14 from spinning bearings.

Since I'm running the stock motor, and modifying the cases isn't an option for me right now, both Dwayne and Garron agreed that turning up the oil pressure is the next best thing for my turbo build. I'm calling Adams today to inquire how I should go about doing that, as Garron referenced shimming the stock oil pressure valve rather then buying the $75 Schnitz piece.

Contact Jim at Competition CNC. He is having a batch of high volume oil pump gears made; this will help address the volume issue. I am going to use one.

The rods came in:

Very nice parts. I keep telling myself that this is the last time...we are about out of money, and paycheck to paycheck is not a comfortable place for me these days, as a fortysomething. Of course, every time I say that, I turn around and do it again the following season...

I've got a 72 hour work week coming up in order to make ends meet...oh boy.
