Dubious, Shane, Bill - Thanks for the info. I really appreicate it. One thing I noticed is that none of you mentioned the 13.5:1 pistons so I won't even consider them. It sounds like a good port job (for my wallet) will be the best bet. I'm not really looking for the amount of power that a stroker would give me and I understand that boring the 14 can be a major pain (because of the case issue).
I think I'll look into a CNC from Carpenter. I've heard good things about him. I know that KWS also does a port for the ZX-14 too. If you guys know of anyone personally who does good work please let me know. Thanks.

Call Competition CNC and talk to Jim. As far as I know, they do the ZX-14 Super Sport heads for Quantum.

Shane - I jusr read about racheal's incident last night on Land racing - I was surprized and concerned. I am glad to hear that she is doing well - considering she was sliding on the pavement at speed...... I am really glad that there are no broken bones and it sounds as though recovery is going well. take care and send my regards to Racheal.

Thanks for your concern, Kevin. She is doing well, and planning is underway to rebuild the bike.

Shane,
Thanks for another great piece of advice. I wrote to Jim and got the following response:
"Richard,
The stage 1 head will work excellent for the street. You should shoot for 13.5 to 1 CR. keep the squish to about .032-.035" and mill the head to get it to 13.5 to 1.
Now that you have a decent CR you can make good use of a set of bigger cams. We can discuss the profile choices for your application when we get to that point.
With this combo and running mrx-01 fuel we have seen 198-204 hp.
Thanks

Sounds like he's got the whole thing figured out already. Now I'm just saving my cash for the winter. Thanks again Shane.

Time for an oil change. I ran a little longer than normal on this change. This oil had on it:
23 Dragstrip Passes
6 Dyno Pulls
8 Top Speed Passes at Loring (about 12 miles at WOT).
Probably about 100 miles total running, and about a month in the bike.
Since the oil was run to full operating temperature in every case, and I wasn't slipping the clutch too hard, I felt comfortable pushing it a bit. I normally use Honda 10W40 Dino oil, and have been considering trying synthetic in the 14. I have used various synthetics in other bikes over the years.
T&J Synthetics was kind enough to provide some oil for testing. Racheal was the lucky winner of the free monthly giveaway, and I stole, errr borrowed, some oil as soon as it arrived:

Shipping was very prompt (I actually got it the next day). I also consider the prices to be reasonable when compared to what I have paid locally for brands such as the Repsol we have run in the Turbo. It is convenient having the oil arrive at your doorstep.
Here is a link with more info:
http://www.bikeland.org/board/viewthread.php?FID=16&TID=49135&set_time=
I intend to test this oil at the dragstrip next week. Racheal will also be testing some in her 1000. In the meantime I am going to get in a few street rides and provide some subjective feedback on shift quality, mechanical noise, smoothness, etc..
I don't know if you guys do this, but I have a funny "ritual". After I pound on the bike at the track, I like to baby it some. I'll usually wash it up some, clean and lube the chain, do the routine stuff, and then take it for a nice easy cruise on some backroads or something. I guess it is also a chance for me to listen for anything odd, etc...but I feel like I mostly do it to give the bike some quality time.

Shane - What are you running in the quarter mile - average summer day including all short times and MPH? What is the density altitude at your track on average summer day ? Also, on your 211.9x pass - were you spraying or all motor?
Thanx,
Kevin

Kevin, I can't give you great averages from the strip. I have only been 3 times this year.
But I would say my average ET is 9.1x. My average 60 foots were 1.51-1.53 range, but I have since improved that to mid 1.4's (I cant' say it is an average yet, but I'm confident I can run that range repeatedly now). Unfortunately the air went away at the track last time out, so I didn't get my 8 second pass in. I have run some 9.04-05's on 1.51's, in good air.
330 ft's 3.8x-3.9x
1/8 5.8x-5.9x.
1/8 mph 124
1/4 mph 149
These numbers were done without the velocity stacks, and on diluted MR9. DA at my track is in the 2800 ft.+ range on a hot summer day. Here are a couple of passes from the last time out:
Bike #55:

Mph was fluctuating wildly that day, apparently the mixed fuel was a contributor.
Better air, ET's, but worse riding:
Bike #57:

Again, the drag passes above were all done on diluted MR9, without the velocity stacks.
All passes at Loring were done on motor. Setup as follows:
Brock's Shortmeg Header System
Area P Carbon Fiber Megaphone Muffler
Maxton 200 MPH Map
MR9 Fuel
No Air Filter
Factory Pro Short Velocity Stacks
Breakdown of 1.5 mile passes:
Saturday
178 MPH License Pass
197 MPH 7+ mph cross/headwind/footshift (bad pass)
Sunday
205.93 MPH (cool air, light/moderate tail breeze, held 11200 indicated)
209.93 MPH (wind picking up, held 11400 indicated)
211.74 MPH (15+ MPH Tailwind, change to 38T sprocket)
211.97 MPH (15+ MPH Tailwind)
208.xx MPH (Sporadic Tailwind)
208.xx MPH (Sporadic Tailwind)
Anyway, I hope this is what you were looking for. I have been really lax on getting good data this year. I don't even have my logger installed yet. Soon, I keep saying...soon. I guess I am still trying to have a little "fun" out there, and I know that once I get the DL-32 installed no track day will be a casual affair.

While I was reinstalling the air filter today, I went ahead and replaced the access panel. I replaced it with the aluminum piece off of the later model bikes. Presumably there was an issue with sealing with the plastic part, and perhaps that has been addressed.

This is certainly not a cure-all for the ram air woes of the 14, it's just a little piece of the puzzle.

I switched that air filter cover last year after reading a thread by someone with a high mileage gen1 zx14 that had noticed that his plastic cover had warped so bad that it was only making contact and sealing at the two bolted down ends- obviously allowing unfiltered air into the airbox
Cheap replacement (and insurance) with the aluminum cover- haven't even looked at mine
for a couple of months now.
Let us know about the Amsoil- I'll try it next as well!

Thanks! Her best was a 228, but we didn't record that one. Probably looked about the same. The camera kept dying on me every time I put it on the 14. I think I know why, so maybe some footage from Maxton in October?
She is doing pretty well. I think we may "ground the fleet" for at least September, though. The costs of Landspeed Racing have really taken a toll this year.

Shane, I 'm curious to what you have for a trailer for the bikes and such.
Please, post a few pics!
I just bought a new stand up Kendon trailer but haven't used it yet- just towed it home last week.
My enclosed V-nose might be for sale soon if I like the open trailer enough.
I want to see what the difference in fuel economy would be too.

We have a 6 x 12 V-Nose with two Condor chocks installed. Just the basics, really. We only get about 10 mpg with either tow vehicle. Ouch. We just can't afford to upgrade vehicles or trailer right now.

I'm in the same boat with the mpg- both my SUV and car are terrible for a long haul
with something in tow.
I'm taking the Kendon down to FL in a couple of months,
hope it does better.

I have a 6X14 low V nose with baxleys. I bolted a small old tool chest I had in the V.
It fits perfect.
I like my little trailer and would not trade for a bigger one.
It sits no higher than my truck, and the diesel doesn't notice it back there.
Big ones take up too much space, and people tend to ask for them for moving.
Open ones you have no shelter, your belongings are in plain view, and exposed to the elements, you can't lock your belongings up, and you can't store stuff in them when not in use.
