I decided to add some wheelbase to the bike since it is so light up front. I added the minimum that I could, which puts the bike at about 64.25". My gearing is now 17/45...with my taller rear tire, that equates to about 16/42 with a Shinko.

Anyway, that's about it. It's been almost 3 months since I've been to the dragstrip and I only have about 15 passes this season. I'm crossing my fingers for a good day at the track tomorrow, and hopefully a new personal best (9.23 is the number for me to beat). But my #1 goal is to have fun.

Shane

any particular reason you wanted to beat 9.23?

Yes, that was my prior best...done back in April. I had not been to the track since then.

Shane any plans to come down to FL one of these days ? I'd really like to make a few passes on your bike ..

As light as you have the bike i bet it could set a new ET and MPH record for the fastest stock motored zx14 .

I'm not sure when I'll be down there; you guys are on the opposite side of the state from where I have some business.

Any idea of what the fastest stock motor ET is?

I think Ninja boy bike holds that title at 8.69 @ 69 inches long .. My best was 8.77 .. I think i'm the only to do that at 62 1/2 inches .. I could be wrong ..

I picked up some cheap "Euro" signals off of Ebay. These are actually pretty nice:

To use them on the 14 you can simply swap the sockets from your stock pieces, so that the wiring hooks right up. I don't use them for lights; in my case they are not even hooked up and have no bulbs in them. I do leave the sockets in place so that they won't get moisture inside. They look better and fit the body lines better, imo.

Stock:

Replacement:

A pretty good deal for under $50 shipped.

For the two people that are following my diet:

I'm a couple of days late on the weigh in. I simply forgot. My goal weight for this date was 180. I've been sitting at about 195 for the last two months. This seems about as low as I am going to get without a serious fitness program. I haven't really been "dieting"; and this is about where I am "stuck" for the time being.

Shane, just show up at the track early when it is good and hot in your full leathers. I lose 5 lbs every Saturday and spend the rest of the week putting it back on.LOL

Thanks Shane, just ordered a set. I also ordered the chrome bulbs to see if they look OK
in the light smoked lens.

They also have other color lens for a ZX-14.

Nope. They don't have bulbs installed and they are unplugged.

Another trip to the track today. Today's air was pretty bad. It was hot and very humid. Everyone was down on ET and MPH, but I wanted to get some more practice. After watching my video's over and over again, I was pretty sure of what I did not want to do.

So, as the day wears on, my times are averaging .10-.15 slower than last week. Not only was I riding it about the same as last week, but the air was dragging the bike down even further. I decided to focus on a change to riding technique..something had to change!

Well, even though I couldn't beat my best ET's from last week, I managed to improve my 60 foots substantially. Bike #55:

1.44...that is a big improvement over the 1.51's I ran last week. Much better than my prior personal best of 1.49. I can repeat it, and there is plenty left to go with more practice.

A couple of more pics from the track:

So, while I didn't get my 8 second slip, I am getting closer.

Shane

PS. As usual, thanks to Rick, Racheal, and Jason for a great Streetbike Seminar/track day!

A little more aggressive with the throttle, a little more initial hit with the clutch. It's still a heavy package to get rolling with me at around 218 lbs. suited.

Today I am celebrating the big 4-0. That's right, 40 years under my belt. Pretty soon you guys will be calling me old!

Anyway, I am trying to get my bike prepped to go to the new LSR event in Maine next week. This event is a 1.5 mile Land Speed Racing venue. Maxton and Texas are only 1 mile, so this gives you another 1/2 mile of room to top out. That should be great for the high hp bikes, but probably not a huge difference for stock motored bikes like mine.

I needed to switch gearing, since obviously 17/45 would be a bad choice for top speed runs. I'll give you the basic process I use.

First, we need to know the actual circumference of the tire. I used a simple tape to measure this:

Still about 78"; apparently the burnouts aren't wearing it down too much yet. I know that the bike will perhaps have the potential for 200 mph. But I also know that the 14 starts to strain in top gear as the revs build to the limiter. I also know that Brock's bike did not break 200 until he put that 40 tooth sprocket on it. And that was with a really aerodynamic rider, Chad Millholland.

So, I go to gearingcommander.com and plug in my gearing and tire circumference. I figure for a 10800 rpm redline, but I know that I want to be able hit 200 before I get to those revs. I am hoping to pull the gearing and go through the traps at about 10500-10600 rpm. The extra 200 rpm will give me room for a tailwind.

10600 rpm with my tire and a 40T rear sprocket gives a theoretical top of speed of 208.5. That would be taller gearing than I want, just based on the paper #'s. However, the bikes typically do not run quite what the spreadsheets say, due to frictional or other losses. My "fudge factor" taking these variables into account is 3%.

So, at 10600 rpm in 6th gear I am looking at 208.5 * .97. That comes out to 202.25 mph. I set the wheelbase back to 63.25, and installed the 40T sprocket:

I have a 41T, just in case this gearing turns out to be too tall. I have my doubts as to whether the motor can pull it, but I am going to shoot for the stars.
