I received a very cool new part in the mail yesterday. As some of you know, Area P has been developing carbon fiber megaphone mufflers for universal applications. I have had very good experience with Area P in the past, so I wanted to try one of these units out.
After speaking with Kerry, he offered to supply me with a unit for R&D purposes. I am using the Brock’s exhaust, and I have been running the Shortmeg muffler up until now. I provided Kerry with several key measurements and photos, and he assembled a custom muffler for my application. Custom applications are an Area P specialty, which is a rarity these days.
I have test-fitted the muffler, taken some pictures, and made a small video with sound. This muffler is less raspy than the Shortmeg, and it has a deeper sound. I’m sure it will sound even better after some miles at the track.

Video/sound clip:
Needless to say, I am very happy with this muffler. I’ll be testing it out at the track soon. For more information about Area P products, check out http://www.areapnolimits.com.

I would love to upgrade to a shortmeg however everyone always comments on how it burns your right heel. Do you think the carbon fiber would run any cooler or gives you more heel clearance?
It looks great! ____________

The carbon should be much less susceptible to "heel burn". That too was one of my concerns.

Looks great Shane
Is the muffler slightly lower or is it just the pics?
I looked at the pics of mine and can't tell.
I've actually thought of replacing my muffler with the Area P CF ever since Lyle
posted about them. No slash cut on yours like on the prototypes, looks nice!

The diameter of the meg is a little larger in the cross-section. But it mounts to the same midpipe as the original. Mine has a larger core than the slash cut model. There are plenty of options for customization to your particular needs...
My particular muffler is lighter than the Shortmeg can, but it will vary with each application.

A quick project tonight, to finish the mounting of the carbon megaphone. Kerry installed a billet mount on the backside of the muffler so that I could connect it to the frame. The steel meg has a tab welded to it, but obviously you can't weld the carbon!
So, I decided I would use some of my carbon fiber scraps and fashion a small hanger. The carbon is light, strong, and matches perfectly. Here is the centerpiece my modest fabrication facility:
Just a little 10" bandsaw from Sears. Under $140. A little bit of work later:
Raiding the bolts bin for some suitable pieces (better bolts and/or safety wire coming):
Installed, side view:
Underneath, where you can see the billet mount on the muffler:
Basically transparent when installed:
The muffler is very solid now. The carbon hanger and additional bolt are probably less than 2 ounces!

Wow,
Hard to tell from the sound bites... is it any louder than an smeg?
Is the core supported by CF, or stainless at the end of the can?

I haven't ridden it yet, so I don't know how loud it is at full boil. But it sounds deeper than the shortmeg. I should have it on the road for a bit this week. Truthfully, loudness was not a concern for me when we decided on the baffle setup.
I am not sure of the internal construction, but I don't see any stainless outside of the baffle. Kerry at Area P would be able explain the arrangement better than I can, as I have not had the unit apart.

Just to add on the carbon fiber...I had a carbon yoshi on my old zx7. I could ride it on a 90 degree day and get the bike extremely hot and could wrap my hand around the pipe when i shut it off. Only thing i didnt like was i had difficulty keeping the luster of the carbon fiber. Back then i couldnt find anyone that sold anything to bring the shine back too it.
