When will we have some full pics of your bike with its clothes on Shane?

Soon! I may actually put the headlight/stock bodywork back on for the dragstrip. Jason Miller suggested I might do better with a little more weight up front. I just hate adding weight to the bike!!

I can run it as light as possible at Maxton, though...

Haha, I just had an idea....

Wear an open face helmet
Get a mouth full of sand
Put your chin on the gas tank to get maximum forward weight
spit the sand out once your in 2nd gear

Problem solved!!!!

Shane,
I saw your other post about kill time and transmission work.
I and many I know would highly recommend Fast By Gast for a back cut tranny.
I had much better experience with theirs than the others.
I won't mention any names as they di the best they could to straighten things out, but the the other company that did my busa transmission sent me back someon elses beat up tranny, 2nd gear had chunks out of the cogs, they didn't deburr the cogs after back cutting etc etc....and the engine build was delayed by 3 weeks waiting for them to get it straight..

They did end up giving me a fully polished back cut trans that they charge $800 for the $400 tranny I wanted,

However, I do know how pissed you would be waiting an extra 2-3 weeks with your cases split and the bike on the stand.

FBG back cuts look much more accurate to boot.

Oh, while your in there, if you have the money and time I would get the crank lightened, or at least clems billet balancer shafts!

For sure do the shafts...!

Back in the day I had my FJ1200 trany gears done at Falicon along with the crank and a billet clutch basket. The gear drive dogs looked great under cut and were deburred and polished. But that was 15 years ago..... wow where has time gone. Now I have a ZX- 14 with more HP than I ever dreamed of from a stock engine.
Never had a problem with it.

R&D did my 12R trans, and I have to say it looks great. But, as they say, YMMV.

Right now I am trying to think of things I can move up front. Battery, power commanders, data loggers, etc. I'd rather relocate existing weight than add it.

But for the short term, the stock upper and lights are likely to go back on. And then I have some other ideas I'd like to try...

I wonder how well it would work out with replacing the balance shafts, without doing any crank or additional balance work? Those shafts are heavy!

I'm getting a spare trans done, just in case I have any issues. I'm hoping not to go into the motor this season....but I want to be prepared. Having the parts here, I'm out of commission for just a week. I have been assured these transmissions are tough; but better safe than sorry!

Shane

The shafts from Clem cost me $58, and no nedd for the HP oil valve or the plate for the HP valve.
I have been told by many that the engine is still smooth as silk.
I weighed the stock rotating assembly when I tore it down, the piston, rings, rods, pins for each cylinder were all within 3 grams, and I account the difference to carbon buildup on the pistons. The crank was checked for runnout and balance. The crank is poerfect from the factory, and witin 3 ten thousands runnout after 10, 000 HARD miles, and 30 lbs + of 50 HP Nitrous.

Would never know the motor was not in perfect balance when I tore it down.

My new rotating assembly is all within 1 gram across the board, meaning one rod and piston weighs .5 grams more than the other 3...!

I will tell you how smooth it runs when done!

Just wanted to confirm that the Odyssey PC310 will
work on the zx14 and will crank up without a problem
with headlights and all needed for street riding.

Shane, I'll probably use the Speedcell for the hot months
when I get one and have the Odyssey as a back up.

A total of $140 will save almost 6 lbs. with the PC310 - not bad at all

Found a way to utilize the rubber strap from the oem battery cover-
the battery is not going to shift!

No need for the oem tray and cover for even more weight savings!

I had to secure the top of the Odyssey because I didn't want it jumping around from wheelies. Will probably have the Speedcell at the track this week, so I'll have some feedback on how it does during a day of racing.

"And then...depression set in"

I was all psyched about being at the track all day tomorrow...and the event has been cancelled due to bad weather. Boy, that sucks. And the track is closed Sunday for Mother's Day...and all the other tracks are either wet, or no test and tune this weekend.

What a bummer.

I'll just make the most of it and go over the bike with a fine-toothed comb. Maybe I'll take it to the local 1/8th mile track since my next full track day isn't until June...

Here are couple of pics from the track the other day. I'm waiting on the hi-res pics to arrive, but these will do for now:

I'm purchasing these pics here:

This guy does a lot of East Coast events, and takes great photos. Looking at photos and video is a great way to see what you and the bike are doing. Sometimes perception and reality are far apart!

Nice pics of you at the track.
Looking forward to seeing more as the season progresses.
As you keep losing weight those leathers are going to get really baggy, and slow you down because they'll be flapping in the breeze!

Absolutely true! I've seen guys at Maxton gain mph after having themselves/leathers wrapped with duct tape! They are getting pretty baggy now...but I am waiting for about 8 more lbs. of weight loss before I get a new set...

Your front suspension is sure lifting a lot on launch. Is that much normal when strapped?

It's not lifting at all...that is a lowered fender and there is a lot of space under the Catalyst upper. Look at the lower fork slider...

Compare how much of the tube is showing to what a stock height bike has...

Seal all openings of loose suit with duct tape and inflate with helium to eliminate baggy fit and reduce weight...combine with gilberjj's sand/mouth modification = 8's! lol

Seriously though, have you decided on a longer wheelbase? Bike is coming together nicely, I'm excited to see it finished.

I'm making some chassis adjustments this weekend. I'm researching, measuring, and formulating my plan right now.

A couple of small changes today. I decided to lower the bike a bit more. This meant sliding the forks up a little. I looked at the tubes closely, and they do taper quite a bit below the lower triple. Take this into account and don't go crazy sliding them up. Also take into account clearance issues with the oil pan.

I went 14 mm up. When you slide the forks up you get a secondary benefit of shortening the wheelbase a little. How is this of benefit? It allows you to go a little further back with the rear wheel while maintaining the same wheelbase. Think about why we increase wheelbase. Look at a chopper...not very good for drag racing, but a super long wheelbase.

I also needed to lower the rear a little. I have threaded adjustable dogbones, so I just turned the adjusters equally until I got where I wanted to be. I dropped the rear about 1/2" or so. I wanted the arm to have a slight positive angle on it with the bike laden. Here you can see a comparison, before and after:

I stacked tires up over top of Racheal when she sat on the bike, just to get the weights similar.

Here is the way the bike sits now, with 2" of ground clearance:

It feels good and low. I still have a few more changes to make, setup-wise. I'm going to look at gearing and wheelbase tomorrow. There may be a slight tweak with the rear ride height when all is said and done.

Have you checked out the Busa shock post?

Might be better for launchs and it might be lighter...

Shane,

the good stuff is finally here and I'm blown away about the BST rear!
Got a red swingarm and some other stuff too.
Listened to Lyle's advice and will have a machine shop do the
axle slots on this arm.

Life is good again!
Will have it all on the bike this weekend- I just can't wait!

I have a Penske drag shock on it:

It is lighter than the oem's, with a greater range of adjustability.

The Busa shock sounds like a great bang-for-the-buck mod.
