quote: Stan, my oem Bridgestone from the 14, with 1100 miles on it, is 13.6 lbs.
So, the stock 14 tire mounted to the GSXR rim, with sprocket carrier (but no sprocket or rotor), would be about 29.0 lbs.
I think that should tell you what you need to know...
Shane
WTF... with the Galfer 220 mm, Vortex 43 and all titanium
bolts and nuts- I just got close to 33 lbs. with the 190/55 Michelin...
It better be my scale or I'll be removing a brand new tire!!!
I should be around 30 lbs... what is going on here?

The sprocket is close to 1.5 lbs, and the rotor is about 1.25, so it is pretty much dead on. Your tire has a little more meat than the stocker and is about .5 lb heavier. Also, factor in the rotor bolts...
Sounds ok to me...

It just doesn't add up the way I see it.
If the bare gsx-r rim is 4 lbs. lighter than the 14 rim , the Galfer is 1 lbs. lighter,
the Vortex is 1 lbs. lighter too...
How is this assembly only around 3 lbs. lighter than the zx14
assembly that someone had recently weighed in at 36 lbs.?
It was a recent thread that I'll look up and bring back again.
I think I'm either overlooking something or that tall Michelin tire
is way more than 0.5 lbs heavier than the 190/50 Bridgestone.
Or the stock 14 rear wheel assembly is well over 36 lbs...?

Well Stan, by my measurements:
Stock 14 wheel with carrier: 19 lbs 8 oz.
Stock Brake rotor 2 lbs 14 oz.
Stock Sprocket 2 lbs
Tire 13 lbs 10 oz.
Total 38 lbs
I don't know what scales everyone else is using. But my total is 38 lbs, not including rotor bolts. You know I am fairly precise about these things (within the limits of my scales).
Don't forget about your sprocket spacer also.

Look at it like this; by my calculations, based on my measured weights of the GSXR parts, you are right on at near 33 lbs. That is over 5 lbs. of weight savings despite your added spacer and larger tire.

I've looked at some numbers around and the
stock 14 rear is around 38 lbs. I also read that
the 55 rear is close to 1 lbs. heavier than the 50 profile.
Thanks again Shane

I avoid the 50 for this same reason- the bike turns quicker
and it has better lean angle... before the lowers start to drag.
The negatives are: added weight and loosing the equivalent
of one tooth on the rear sprocket- I can live with both.
Shane,
I'll do a little reading around and will post any findings
of tires that are lighter than other brands/ models.

The Pirelli Supercorsa and Michelin Power Race are some of the lightest out there.
The Power Race is about 12.5 lbs. in 180/55 and 190/50 sizes (by my scale).

Someone had weighed a zx14 Marchesini forged aluminum
with a 190/ 50 tire and a stock brake rotor at 31 and change lbs.
The Marchesini set for the 14 is almost 3 lbs. lighter than the Carrozzerias,
just for a reference here.
I guess at around 32.5 lbs. the gixer rear is actually among good company...
again taller tire and an added spacer and all for the conversion.
Any updates on your build... with sweet BST pics maybe?

Weight, price, were my primary reasons.
It should be noted that the shinko is about 3.5 lbs heavier than the michelin 2ct from recollection.

Yes, I got a set. We'll be there on the 24th, and hopefully I'll have my frame and motor turned into a real bike by then!

Thanks for the bump, Bawls. Truth be told, I've been kinda down about my project lately. Last weekend I went to Maxton, and I made a couple of passes on Racheal's Turbo Busa. I picked up one of these with it:

Keep in mind this is only my 3rd pass on the bike without the speed limiter. Racheal went 211 on the same boost settings, with plenty more to come. It was so easy, it is ridiculous. I hate to say it, but the Busa fits me like a glove, as-is.
I started thinking about all of the time and money invested in my 14, and how it is not going to be that fast. I guess everything is relative, right? In fact, I started to think about putting it back to stock and picking up a Busa instead. It's just so much easier to go fast on, and the aftermarket support is top notch.
Well, I'm trying to forget about that craziness and focus on my bike. It was a nice day, so I decided to paint the swingarm. I chose not to powdercoat it because the local guys aren't that great...and once it is done it would have to be stripped down again if they made a mistake (highly likely). I've had good luck with the rattle cans in the past, so I went that route:

I masked off the axle adjuster slots since they will just flake/peel anyway:

So far, so good:

It's not quite perfect, but that's ok. One thing I've learned with painting is that you need patience. I will lightly sand some parts and re-spray....after I give it 24 hours to cure.
Here is what is making me kind of discouraged:

I can't begin to tell you how much I have to get done in order to race this bike in 2 weeks. It seems very overwhelming, so I am just taking it a small piece at a time. I will finish painting the arm and move on...and so on....and so on....

Shane,
That ain't bad ...
My ZX14:

Turbo Busa project:

Then the Chrome shop burned the end of the Mac arm for the Busa, Just when I thought the project was moving forward, With the roller done except the arm, which i had been waiting on for 7 weeks, I had to strip the frame to have it powdercoated to match the repaired arm...
Oh, and then my assistant bent a piston ring, which took over 10 days to get out of the states.....
Somedays all you get is a kick in the pants for trying....
I will be home in 5 days, the powder coat and anodized parts should be done, and I will have 3 weeks to assemble both bikes... if only it was as easy as bolting stock stuff back on... Both have GSXR 1000 forks, wheels, ohlins shocks, threaded links, turbo's , fuel systems to plumb, boost controllers, additional injectors, SB6, XD16, and on and on....
Yeah, after 3 weeks off, I will be ready to return to work for a break... LOL
As for the busa comment, yes they are cheaper to build, easier to wrench on, and have more aftermarket support, but they still don't have a superior Kawi trans, crank, block or clutch.
I really wish Kawi would not have done the canbus monster wiring harness though...
