Those pieces are molded into my Supersport upper; it may be different on your side panels?

Hear that sound? It's the sound of my heart breaking.

Did you ever have a certain piece on your bike that you really liked? Maybe it was the exhaust, the levers, something small. Well, on my bike, I really love my billet quick access clutch cover:

I've been looking at it lately...it sure looks heavy. It was with a feeling of dread that I pulled it today, to weigh it next to the stock piece:

First up, oem, with bolts:

And now, the billet piece, with bolts:

Ouch. 2.5 lbs. difference. Now, without the lockup assembly, and having tested various spring setups, I really have no need for it. Oh well.

Ironically, I have ordered a lock up. But the reality is that I won't be using it to tune my launch; I want it to hold the nitrous without having to go to heavier springs. It comes with a spacer that is going to be much lighter than this Orient Express part.

So, it looks like my beautiful billet cover is headed to a shelf in the garage for now...

damn... well I am in the same boat, there are certian things I will not part with, rearsets, clip ons etc... I have to have a bike that fits right...

The clutch cover will remain as I have a multi stage and a 2 stage lock up to tune...

Ok, this is where some people will say I'm crazy....

Anyway, time for "Fun With Composites"....

Comparison, oem undertail bracket vs. bracket made from Garolite:

Oem, mounted:

Garolite piece, mounted:

Oem, Garolite, raw Carbon Fiber strip:

Weights:

Stock piece 2.6 oz.
Garolite piece 1.4 oz.
Raw Carbon 1.3 oz. (oversize...expect a finished piece to be lighter)

This was really just a little experiment. Garolite is a composite that is about 40% lighter than aluminum. Carbon is about half of the weight of aluminum. Garolite is about the same tensile strength as aluminum; carbon is much stronger. Garolite is only 20% of the cost (or less) of Carbon Fiber, however.

Here is a good page of info on metals and composites:

http://www.spambutcher.com/parts/materials.html

Just an FYI, I purchased these materials from McMaster Carr:

http://www.mcmaster.com

The Garolite, in a 1" x 24" strip was under $3, while the Carbon was around $10 for a 1" x 12" piece (both 1/8th thickness).

I have not tried to cut the CF yet. I scored the Garolite with a razor and was able to break it to length.

I really like the CF, but unless I find an inexpensive (and safe...the dust is supposed to be pretty bad stuff) means of working with it....Garolite will be my choice on some of the pieces.

Shane I just took my shormeg system off I used Orange High temp RTV on it , after approx 1yr it was all gone I saw traces of leaks up at the head comming out of the header, so make sure you find some good stuff to put your pipe together with.

Thanks for the tip. Exhaust gas temps are upwards of 1350 degrees...I'm not sure that rtv is rated for that....

Ok, final experiment:

Pardon the poor finish & holes...I've never dealt with carbon fiber before. Basically, it is unforgiving. It did cut with a jigsaw with no problems, and I used a hand drill.

I would suggest a drill press, because if the bit walks a little, you are done. Also I suggest eye protection, gloves, and a proper respirating device...I'm not even certain of what type of device that is yet. I actually held my breath and walked away to breath when I was done.

The next pieces that I make in CF will be 10x better. But the Garolite is still a lot easier to work with.

The Cycle Logic I ordered comes with a thin spacer, and uses the stock cover.

I see you have a vent coming out of your cover, are you overwhelming the stock vent with the Turbo?

But imagine if I didn't shave this weight AND also wore thick socks. Man, forget it...last place, for sure!

I added the extra vent when I installed the turbo knowing the stock motor had ventaltion
problems .... Its been perfect since the install.

No puke can needed.

I dont know where you usually find sheets of CF Lyle but you can get it from the robotmarketplace.com. They sell parts to make combat robots. They can also make you different size and thickness sheets per your request.

My Cycle Logic lock-up clutch came today. They are on sale right now, less than $300 including shipping.

Here is what you get:

Lock up assembly, spacer plate, new bolts and the required gaskets. The whole works, basically.

A quick measurement on the scale tells me that with the heavier bolts included, my total weight gain over stock will be about 1 lb.:

Not too bad. If I were to run my quick access cover, that would add another 2.5 lbs. I don't plan on doing that right now. I am not going to be "tuning" this setup. I just want it to hold extra power at high rpm, without super-stiff clutch springs.

Here are a couple more pics:

I've seen it mentioned that someone purchased one of these units and some of the lock up arms were stiff. I found that a couple were a little snug (when at rest in the center) on mine. However, I spun the assembly and they all move freely. I'll go over all of the arms and check the assembly for any machining slag before I install it. I'll also lube up the arms.

Overall this unit looks to be quite the bargain, depending on your needs.
