-My ZX-14 Build Thread- (TOC on page 1)

This thread has been active for nearly a year and has become very large. The project has far exceeded its initial scope. While I had just planned to make some basic bolt-on modifications, my bike has evolved into nearly a dedicated race machine. This has been quite the learning experience…and continues to be! In effort to help viewers sort through this information, I have created a table of contents. As the thread will likely to continue to grow, I will update the listing from time to time.

-----------------------------------------------------

As some of you know, I purchased a new 2007 ZX-14 about 6 weeks ago. During that time I have been amassing a collection of aftermarket parts to install on it. As a hobby my girlfriend and I drag race and land speed race. So most of the mods I have planned will be to make the bike more suitable for those venues.

Almost two years ago I made a thread detailing my prep to get my ZX-12 ready for Maxton. That thread was fairly popular, so I thought I would start another for the 14. I'm not out to break any records, I'm just looking to have fun and make this bike my own.

I currently have on hand the following aftermarket parts:

Steering Damper
Exhaust
Power Commander
Sprockets
Catalyst Seat
Mirror Block-Offs
Double Bubble Windscreen
Kill Switch
Swingarm Extensions
Lengthened chain
Metal Chain Gaurd
Adjustable Sidestand
Lowering Links
Front Strap
Fender Eliminator
Innovate LM-1 Data Logger

I will try to detail, with photos and impressions, installation of all of the above...and hopefully more. I expect this process to take several weeks at the minimum. Here is the bike, as I pulled it into the garage yesterday:

Keep an eye out for regular updates.

Shane

I would nix the double bubble.
I found it slowed me down on accelleration to top end, and unless you are a really tall dood, the catalyst seat lowers you 2.5 inches and will get you out of the wind.

Good luck!

Funny you should mention the double bubble. It was the first item I installed, along with the mirror block-offs.

Before:

After:

It's obviously a much taller screen. I am 6'1. I get a lot of turbulence until I get the last 1" down in tuck. At that point, I can no longer see through the screen due to the gauges being in the way. I plan to address that issue a little later. As for hurting the top end, I will need more data to draw a conclusion. I loaned the screen to Zack Millholland at Maxton and he ran 197 using it. That was about in the middle of where he had been running, perhaps down 1 mph. He is much more compact than I am, however. I wouldn't be surprised if the stock screen is perfect for smaller guys. I will just have to test it out at Maxton. I found the taller screen helped me on the 12R as there was just no way I could get low enough to get out of the airstream with the stocker.

I also installed some Pingel mirror block-offs. These come polished, but I immediately sanded and painted them. Also note the lack of tinted lower area on the Zero Gravity screen, totally exposing the wiring and back of the gauge cluster:

I'll have to address that later as well. It seems that most aftermarket parts arrive in "kit" form...some modification is usually required.

Just over the weekend I used the LM-1 for the first time. I just hooked up the a/f sensor to Racheal's Turbo and logged the runs. It is pretty new to me as well, but I think I am really going to get into it. In my line of work I have been analyzing trended equipment data for years.

It is the M14. Here are some pics of the header and midpipe:

I will have more pictures when I post up the install. I have to track down some new header gaskets, one of the old ones would not seal.

One other small item installed, a BMC race filter (top filter stock, bottom filter bmc):

The filter simply slides into the frame on the left side of the bike:

Only two screws to remove. A much more simple job than on my ZX-12R with K&N's, that's for sure!

some flat paint on the bottom of the inside of your double bubble will cover the guts such as the down sensor and all that other stuff the factory windshield had hidden so well

More disassembly, and test fitting the extensions:

The extensions are a very tight fit. I had to lightly sand the inside of the adjuster blocks and extensions to get them slide in, and they were still very snug. More pictures as I go to finalize that step, which might be a day or 3.

Someone was wondering precisely how to get to the air fliter. Here is a series of pictures to illustrate the location. As you can see, the fairing inner panels, and then the forward frame cover (false tank area) will need removed. Then simply remove the two screws from the cover, and slide out the filter:

Hope this helps!

Nice Shane... especially like the clean floor :-)
Your right about the shield.... compared to stock it looks like the canopy off an F14 or something. lol
The swingarm looks a little anemic but it sure looks good stretched out like that!
Good access to the filters and I like the ramair tube placement and securing plates as well.
Looking good man,
Todd

Yeah, I was amazed at how many tires I have. I mean, tires that I have no idea of when I picked them up! lol

The swingarm is definitely not very stout IMO. I might be looking at a Trac Dynamics or Mcintosh in the future.

Here are a couple of additional pics and observations.

It looks like there will be sufficient room to get to the plugs when need be. Seems roomier above the engine than the layout of the 12R:

I also like the way the oil pan leaves a lot of room to squeeze the header piping up tight to the engine:
