2008 ZX-14 wins AMA Dragbike SuperSport Class
Hey guys,
Since it was a make-up race from the rained out Commerce (Atlanta, Ga.) event run in Bristol last weekend…it sort of got lost in the details of the Bristol event, but 2008 ZX-14 Team Green rider Farlie Hall scored one for Kawasaki.
New for 2008 AMA Dragbike changed the rules to allow large displacement entries to complete against the 1000’s in a class formerly known as 1000 SuperSport. After qualifying number 1 Farlie was the first “non-1000” to score a win in the class’s history and he also took out several GSX-R1000’s and 08 Busa’s on his way to victory.
For those of you who are unfamiliar, the AMA Dragbike SuperSport class is based on the AMA Super Stock road racing rules. The bikes are stock wheelbase with extremely limited modifications, stock wheelbase, foot-shifting.
The Commerce event was shortened to 1/8 mile for several reasons and was finished as a 1/8 mile event also. Here is the event sheet: AMA Dragbike Commerce SuperSport Results
Special mention should also go out to Craig Hopkins for doing a great job tuning the bike in the much different Bristol conditions. The corrected Air Density hovered just under 4000 feet all weekend.

Woohoo. Even though it's only 1/8 mile, a win's a win. Thanks for the info, Brock.

Only an 1/8th? I'm a firm believer that the 1/8th mile levels the playing field. You can have a bike that's really fast on the big end when you're running 1/4 miles... but in the 1/8th, there's just really no room to play catch up.

That's a great result, especially as there was just one Kawasaki against all those Suzuki's. Farley was in the "Fives" in the Qualifying.
I have a question, how low can the RT go before red-lighting? I noticed that Jeremy Teasley was at 0.092sec in the Eliminations final, that's pretty quick reactions.

That was on a pro tree ... .092 is not to bad ....Most run in the 0.100 range or higher ... I have seen Jesse run 0.013 ... 000 is perfect .... Red would be neg - 0.001 ..........
This is one of my tickets ...
The ticket on the left is a redlite and the other is taken a nap ..

Thanks Smokin, that's what I wanted to know. It is theoretically possible to have a 0.00 RT.

Bob C,
Reaction time has nothing to do with the ET as the clocks don’t start until after the rider moves.
Example: a rider can sit completely still for 3 or 4 seconds after the light turns green and still receive a correct ET (with a poor reaction time)....BUT, if he rolls forward or backward enough to break the beams, the clock starts ticking from that time which would be added to his time, ruining his chance at a proper ET.
This is how a “holeshot” win can be noticed. One rider runs a 9.00 with a 1 second reaction time (reaction time is the time between when the light turns green the rider moves to break the beams (this starts the clock…1 second is an exaggerated example for the sake of clarification--.4 second is the time interval on a pro tree—so .400 is perfect. Some time back NHRA took out the .4 at the front so perfect would now read .001) and the other runs a 9.10….but the rider with the 9.10 wins because he cut a better light ½ second which allowed him to leave first and cross the finish line first even though he ran a slower ET. He would be .4 ahead at the end of the run.
Here is an actual example in national competition:
Valdosta SuperSport Eliminations
Look at the final between Kenny Poppell and Jeremy Tasley…..Kenny ran a 9.01 but LOST to Jeremy’s slower 9.07 because Jeremy’s reaction time was better. This allowed him to cross the finish line before Kenny even though he ran a slower ET.
I hope this helps more than it confuses!

Good point Brock .. Most don't know that fact ....Most of the new to drag racing guys think faster reaction time means faster ET ... Like Brock stated the clock doesn't start till you break the beam ..... Another thing you guys should know is deep and shallow staging ... Deep stage > Roll in deep and turn off or come close to turning off the top yellow bulb , this will make your ET quicker and MPH slower ....Deep stage makes the 1/4 mile shorter .... Shallow stage > Roll in and turn on the first yellow and stop short of turning on the second yellow or just get the second yellow to flicker on ... Now you have made the 1/4 mile longer and will make more MPH but will have a slower ET ... .. Long time bracket racers use these tricks and can be a help on a pro tree ...Lets say you have two bikes running the same numbers and you need an edge to win .... Deep stage and you may just edge the other guy out with a lower ET , Becarefull because a red lite is more possible because you are close to breaking the beam faster...

Even though JT cut a better light than Farlie did the ZX had the muscle to drive around him, not something JT is used to have happen to him...;-)
With Kawasaki and Brock's help this is the best bike we have had in our 3 seasons in AMA Dragbike, without their help and our local sponsor Houston Concrete Services none of this would have been possible this year.
Thanks Reid, Brock and Ronnie, I just get the privilege of tuning and owning it.
After 3 back to back runner up points finishes in the Texas Shootout Series it's time for this team to make a showing in AMA Dragbike points.
Cheers,
Pops

Thanks Brock & Smokin, a nice clear explanation. Yes I knew that RT doesn't count in the ET, just in the competition to be first through the quarter.
I did quite a lot of quarter mile sprinting in the 1980/90's with the NSA in England, then had a gap of around ten years. That club, the NSA, didn't use a Tree back then, just a start-line marshall, a chock behind the rear wheel and we went one at a time. At our 200mph club meeting in May this year I bailed out of the top speed runs as it was very windy and I wasn't going to improve my results to date. Instead I concentrated on the quarters as the club is now part of Straightliners and all set up with the latest equipment. My first proper experience with the Tree.
I thought my ET's were better for having an opponent in the other lane and going on the light, rather than just sit and decide when to go. A real blast and I was quite pleased with 9.84 as the bike was geared 17/40 with stock wheelbase. (and I'm rusty as hell)
All the best,
Bob.

SMOKINZX14*********how did you do it?
NEED SOME HELP!!! I feel like I am breaking my head. Just got my bike in April but I can't get out of these 9's! Lowest pass was 9.01 @ 152. Full BROCK'S(much props) alien head -1 & +3 rear, air shifter, no flies, no filter, stretched out 6". 6'1--190lbs without leathers. I tried mr9- RPM's went quicker but not faster than 150mph. Didn't want to keep spending $ so went back to pump 87. I want to do it all motor. Should i go back down on my rear sprocket? Again looking for help.
