Warning rant ahead

I just got my boys rear tire fixed yesterday at cycle zone and today its flat and leaking between the rim and tire at the bead.

they also scared up the outside of the rim and used grease to get the tire back on(yes I am talking gun grease), I cant do any thing till Monday but I am thinking the worst that the tire and rim are both junk.

What dose a stock rim for a 650 Ninja cost?

Any one have any other horror stories about getting something simple done and having it go bad?

What happens if you mount a tire in reverse?

dose it damage the tire or just not drive right?

I know I'm screwed four getting the tire or rim replaced for free but this sucks that now the only shop that I can trust to work on my bikes is 100+ miles from me in Cheyenne.

I had a front tire mounted backwards for 2k miles.....didn't change a thing....even got to drag some knee on it.

The only thing it really does is make the tire wear irregularly....which shortes the life of the tire considerably.

Also won't pump out the water from the middle of the tyre to the sides, it will funnel it in. Then won't be too good for traction..

it won't cost you anything if you take it back to them and make them fix it, they are suppose to be about "customer satisfaction" (i believe they have signs in the store that say this) make them pay for it man, they messed it up!

A local shop trashed my brand new 3 wheeler rim...the owner wasn't there and and the greasy tech and kid that changed the tire said it was like that already. The strange thing was the shop ordered the rim brand new for me and, of course, they received it first. The owner had no prob replacing the rim for free. I let the tech and kid know if I ever saw either of them off the premises I was gonna beat their asses down hard. I never saw either of them at that shop again, I think the owner dumped them. Or they thought it was better for their health to disappear

Just found out today that a tire and rim will cost 700.00.

The guy at the bike shop told me that there were some pits in the rim that he had to sand out with sandpaper and the tried to seal it with grease.

He also told me that it quit leaking @ 75PSI so he thought t was all good.

This sucks I know from experience that they will not stand behind there work and replace the tire or the rim.

My boy might be out for the summer and he is going to be pissed.

I have managed tire stores all across nevada and california for goodyear. i have done this for 16 years come sept 08. You guys are right about the "funnel effect". it will channel water drainage to the center of the tire. definatly not good for traction. You mentioned that this was a rear tire. The driving tire. running this tire backwards on a motorcycle will damage the belting and structure of the tire over time. Depending on how hard it was riden whike backwards. the belts are laid in a directinal pattern on the driving tire. This is why most drag slick tires are directional yet have no tread.

Actually the way the tread is laid on the tire has a lot to do with it. The tread is wrapped around wth a scarf where its joined togeather. Mounting a back tire backwards places the scarf where the driving torque tries to tear open the scarf. Fronts are opposite as the force there is braking so if it is turned around the force tries to tear it open. Thats why when back tires are run on the front the arrow is reversed. Some cruisers do run a back in front, just like some cruisers run a car tire in back by choice.

This is why I do all of my own work. All of it!!!

I read posts like this all of the time on a variety of motorcycle and car websites.

I have never understood why folks don't learn to do, at least, some of the simpler tasks on their own. To spend money to have somebody else screw up your motorcycle...

... buy the tools and screw it up yourself.

Many of my friends will come over and we hang out in my shop and work on our own stuff. It's a great time, you save money and, God forbid, you might learn something.

Certainly, there has got be folks in your area that would be willing to help out. If not, then start something, yourself

Well oz I do work on my own bikes but I do not have a two or three thousand $ rimclamp tire machine sitting in my shop nor a spin balancer.

And yes I could have broke down the tire with a jack to break the bead and tire spoons to get it off but why when the local bike shop has the right equipment on hand and what would take me a few hours he should be able to do in 15 minutes and not screw it up.

(God forbid, you might learn something) Now thats a good one, not that I am opposed to learning something but in the 10 years as a truck mechanic I have found that it is normally better to have the right tool for the job thats why we send our fuel pumps off to another shop to be fixed we have no pump stand, could I fix a pump with out it? sure I could but why when the shop down the street has a stand and can stand behind there pumps?

I am taking the rim back to the shop in the morning after talking to him on Friday, it sound like he might actually help we will see what happens.

Oz no never called you an idiot just stating that sometimes the proper tool for the job rings true.

I try not to give the stealer any more money than I have to.

The only idiot was the one running the tire machine!

No offense taken

Been married 28 years.... I just plain don't argue... I learned 27 years ago, I'm no good at it

I'm not saying that it doesn't suck that the fubar'ed your wheel.

Then point being, I read over and over about the "stealers" and knuckle heads screwing up folks motorcycles, cars and such. Again, that's why for over 40 years I've worked on my own bikes, cars, etc.

BTW for less than a hundred bucks you can be set up with a bead breaker, rim protectors, irons, and a way to balance.

CO-OP it. Hook up with some of your bud's who are in the same boat. Then it costs practically nothing. This goes for valve shim kits, manuals, tools...

My wife calls Saturdays in my garage "Day School". It's a lot of fun just hanging around spinning wrenches, telling lies, bustin' each other's chops and laughin' like dopes.

It's almost as much fun as riding the damned thiings

I'm going to take the store's side on this issue. If the wheel is pitted from corrosion (neglect - not cleaning) and the new tire won't seal because of the corrosion, it is not the installers fault. They didn't let the wheel corrode. You even stated they tried sanding the bead to maybe allow it to seal and sounds like they didn't charge any add'l labor for that time. I am sure they will break-down the wheel and let you try to fix the rim for no extra charge. The only thing I see they did wrong was not alerting you to the fact the wheel was pitted and it may not hold air....before you left with it. If you want to save some money have the store put a tube in it (if the wheel is too far gone).
