My first Dyno run tomorrow.

Yo!

I'm heading down to Evan Steel Performance tomorrow for a baseline Dyno run on a 100% stock Zx-14. I want to get a baseline run in to have bone stock figures to compare against when mods are in place.

Aside from the normal safety checks (Fluids, Tires etc ...) is there anything I should do?
I want to run regular premium gas 92 octane from the same source for both runs.

evan's guy dynoed my 14@ arroyo seco in 06. I don't remember the #s, I wasn't impresses, but its about 4000ft too. The name of the run was 'blevins' if he still has it. He took the 'fat' out of my brock map down low(gen3). He didn't touch the mid and top of the map because it was 'perfect'.

He's a standup guy. He did my forks for my 12 in a cold windy night after he drove 300 miles to support the track.. No rest, set up his shop and took care of me like he said. I was impressed with his service. He finished my forks at 2am or so. We need more folks like Evan in the race community.

Well,

I had a full tank of 92 octane, so I had to run with that. Do you guys ever run 92, or stricly 89 all the time? Will 89 have any negative effect such as clogging injectors or such? the decal on the tank says 90 minimum.

Here's the dyno run, hot-a$$ day at 101 in the shade indoors, lol.

The reason for the minimum octane rating is to avoid detonation (the fuel-air mix igniting due to temperature and pressure prior to the spark plug firing). The octane in the gas is actually a combustion inhibitor, which is why 89 octane has more power per unit of fuel. Modern car engines have knock sensors to tell the ECU that detonation is happening so the ECU can adjust the timing to stop it. These bikes do not have that sensor. I usually run 92 octane in mine, but i don't drag race so i am not too worried about squeezing every last HP out of the bike.

The lower the octane you can safely run without detonation the better!! as far as power goes that is

I've ran 89 in mine and switched back to 93 due to hesitation and detonation. This mainly only occurs with 2 up I guess due to the extra load. I dynoed mine with a Brocks smeg and brocks map with 93 and it made 179hp this was at 2600ft elevation. As far as gas goes I wouldnt go back to 89 except for maybe the winter time when its cooler and more acceptable for lower octane.

Kawibonzai,

on the same dyno, mine(2006) ran 173hp and 101 tq on evans dyno. It was the highest hp/tq number he had ever run. At the time, 89 octane, Brock Gen3, 95+ degrees& humid@4000ft.

So I'm guessing my Brocks Gen3 is worth 12-15 hp. I'm very happy with that!

Yuppers, good numbers.

I'll have my new M14/M10 setup from Muzzy on the bike tomorrow. BMC Race Filter and PC-III also show on tracking as arriving tomorrow as well.

Evan is booked for Dyno time this weekend, so maybe next week I'll do another Dyno run after the mods. Evan remembered the Blevins run but I didn't see a folder under the Zx-14 directory with that name.

I cant wait.

Good luck with that, real curious how your muzzy runs on that dyno. Thanks.

You said that was just a baseline run to capture the power curve, so can I assume the dyno technician didn't do any mapping? The reason I ask is because my guy found extra power and torque after custom mapping and he also sorted out the shape of the power curve low down. This made a big difference to the way the bike feels both on road and track. It can take quite a few runs though.
