08 special edition running hot

just purchased an 08 ZX-14 & it has 300 miles on it. The temperature gauge is running 1 notch above half.
wondering if this is considered hot for this model, or do they all run about this hot?

If it not flashing hot you are ok ... With 300 miles it's going to run a little warmer than when you get 1000 to 1500 miles ...

Depending on heat, this is where mine runs most all the time in the summer heat. I have almost 1800 miles and hasnt really changed much from new. If you havent done an exhaust and PC yet your missing out on alot of untapped HP.... I have a brocks smeg and map and I removed the flies and like it alot better. I know there are discussions about leaving the flies in on the 08', but to each his own, I like them out! I came from an 03' Hayabusa and even the 08' 14 sucked to the low end grunt of the Busa. (not any more) though!!!

While at stop light or moving slow and you smell the sweet coolant smell than get it going all is fine.
So far I seen mine all the way to "H" and no problem. The best MOD for the high reading on temp guage is to get some duck tape and tape over it so you can't see it anymore.

Changing the pipes will cool it down a good bit. Those stock cans holds on to the heat....

Stock cans = Back pressure

Back pressure + lean = Heat

is it flashing? if no, then it is not hot. sometimes i wish they had actual temp indicated vs bars but then it wouldn't matter unless they gave you a spec range. your spec range is above: no flashing = in spec

I've had mine overheat only 3 times. Twice on the dyno and once after 20mins of 8000+RPM and a shut down too soon. It was flashing..........

IF it does overheat often.........check your coolant level.... and then the pump.

pipes help ,, changing coolant helps,,,,but remember that motor is tight,,i believe it takes up to 5000 miles for this machine to completely loosen up,, i have 3800 n its cooled down a bunch,,due to loosening up,,i broke it in motomans way,,,accell n decell, took it up to 11000 the first 20 miles,,changed oil at 23miles,,then 400 miles,,then 900 miles,,then syn at 1500,,it runs good,,i never had good luck breaking it in by the manual,,

What has worked best for me, in order of impact:
1. Add an aftermarket exhaust which eliminates the catalytic converters. Note that you will need to have a PC with an appropriate map to insure that you don't run excessively lean, further exacerbating the engine heat
2. Ceramic coat the headers and mid-pipe of the aftermarket exhaust to significantly reduce the amount of heat dumped from the exhaust system into the radiator at low speed. If you order from Brock, order them coated. Otherwise you will have to find someone to do it. If you can't get a ceramic coater, or if you don't use an aftermarket exhaust, consider thermal wrap. Thermal wrap has its advantages and disadvantages. Search the internet to understand what you are getting into with thermal wrap. I recommend ceramic coating on the inside and outside of the exhaust components.
3. Add Redline Water Wetter to your coolant to improve coolant efficiency. You can also run Redline Supercool (or a similar product) instead of glycol based coolants for maximum benefit. These products are primarily deionized water with corrosion inhibitors and water pump lubricants added. Water has a much higher heat transfer coefficient than glycol based coolants. However, Supercool (and similar products) does not provide freeze protection for winter so you will have to add anti-freeze during the winter. Forget about propylene products such as Engine Ice for temperature reduction. They have a significant benefit in that they are biodegradable (good for the environment) and they won't kill your pets if they drink it. But you won't see any differenct in your engine temperature. In fact, the heat transfer coefficient for propylene glycol is worse than for ethylene glycol.
4. Haven't done this so I can't confirm the benefit. However, there are a lot of positive comments about changing the front fender to a ZX10R to increase airflow to the radiator.
