Corbin Bags + Exhaust

I some Corbin stuff. (Sorry it is a bit of a novel) A new Corbin Seat and back rest. I want to take my 7 yr old on the bike and feel much more comfortable with the seat rest behind her. The seat looks very good but I have yet to give it a try. I did however also add the Corbin Bags to the bike. The finish turned out well and the install was quite easy. I followed the instructions and rechecked it many times. Although the bags did not touch the exhaust there did not appear to be alot of clearance. If anything was to be put into the bags they will touch the exhaust for sure. I thought I would be optimistic and went for a ride.(The bags were empty) I stopped at a local bike shop about 15-20 min away and checked the bags. The bags had started to melt. The shop guy lent me tools and I removed them right away. I then had to get someone to meet me to pick up the bags so I could get the bike home. What a pain in the A.... There is likely not alot that can be done. (Returning the bags are probably not an option, I drove 5.5 hours to Montana from Canada and picked them up in Montana) They are installed as per the instructions. So this brings me to my question... I think the best solution is new exhaust. I commute and want to keep the bags. I need exhaust that will work with the bags. Can the factory exhaust be modified (Bent down) to be lower? I spent ALOT of money on the bags and seat and backrest, I would like to keep my cost down.

Hi, I would suggest you to take the stock exhausts and replace them for other. The stock ones have catalitic converters inside (cause of the emission regulation in California) so they heat up like crazy (my forearm knows about it....ouch!), also they take forever to cool down. I did replace them with Yoshimura's TRC Ti & SS Slip Ons ones and besides a little gain in HP (cause the engine exhaust is not as restricted as it was), sounds better, looks better, and does not heat as much as it did before. Take a look at a thread here named "Baby's New Look", there you can see pics of the ZX-14 with the Yoshi's installed.
I went with the Slip Ons because I love the 4-2 look of the original set up, but you can also install just one exhaust in a 4-1 configuration, using a performance exhaust system. There are plenty of alternatives for the ZX-14
Good Luck & Best Regards.

I believe brock makes a gen3 exhaust that is designed to work with those bags. Check his site. I realize you'd like to save money, but I'd get the gen3 w/carbon fiber can. I love mine, and I can grab the can as soon as I step off the bike. Spend a little more now, protect those bags, and get you a sweet exhaust with top notch customer service and MAP SUPPORT. Just a thought.

Another option is slipons, maybe carbon fiber cans? Either way, the stock exhaust will always generate way too much heat. Personally, I'm a Brocks fan. Love his products.

If the power of your bike is plenty for you, and you are sure you won't be feeling the need for more speed in the future, then just grab the cheapest set of slip-ons you can find. I went with Two Brothers which definitely are not the cheapest slipons unless you get them on Ebay for $200 like I did But once you throw those catalyctic converters away the heat becomes manageable. IE: if you press your calf up against the stock exhaust, you see steam rising, hear a sizzle as your hair burns off, and after more than a split second your skin becomes permanently attached to the muffler. With slipons, you just are left with a Oh-shit-why-did-I-grab-that-off-the-oven-with-my-bare-hand burn. lol

+1

Brocks Gen3 full system, carbon can. Great product - I miss that more than anything about the 14.

Here's a pic of my Gen3, looks like it lays low and the carbon is so cool it won't burn anything.

It's not that I don't want new exhaust but the cost of the Corbin seat, Corbin Bags, Gas to get them, and the money I spent once I got there makes another purchase very difficult (Total $3,500.00). The gen3 looks great and my bike is black so the carbon cans would blend very well. I also like the looks of the Muzzy M10. With new exhaust I would also be into a PC? That would be more cash. If I could have the stock exhaust bent down a bit, it would help me save some cash and allow me to use the bags. Right now they are just big paper weights. A local dealer (Calgary) has tried to get me into Hamaguchi slip ons (never heard of them, but I am new to this stuff). Prior to purchase I had spoken to Corbin to confirm there was no issues with the stock exhaust and proximity to the bags. I would not have bought if I knew this was going to be the outcome. It is all very depressing.

that may be true, or might not be. any lower on the exhaust and you chance snagging/dragging it on the pavement during turns

M10 is supposedly a great exhaust, makes more overall power than the Gen 3, but less on top (1-2hp difference peak). PCIII not necessarily needed, the 14 runs overly rich from the factory which, IMO, is because they know everyone is going to upgrade the exhaust.

As far Hamaguchi, I believe I read someone here who had dealt with them and said they are a quality made, good sounding, and cheap exhaust system. I site searched it but no match. You sure you speeelled it correct?

"Hamaguchi Ti full exhaust systems are used by the 2002-2005 FIM Asia Supersport champion. They are hand made in Japan using the 'wagiri' method of forming tight radius bends without disrupting flow. You will see this method of pipe fabrication used on GP and high end race machines. Also, variable diameter tubing is used throughout the length of piping.

Because of the many hours of research put in to developing the FIM team's exhaust systems, the power output of these systems is quite high."

I never really considered the clearance thing. I was hoping to get them put down just about an inch or two by the cans, (I am not an aggressive rider by any standards. I think a little old man passed on a scooter passed me on a corner just the other day. I did however smoke him on the straight away.) There is so much heat off the stock exhaust the that a 1-2 " drop still might not be enough. I am likely going to take the plunge and do new exhaust. Sticks thanks for the web shot of the Hamaguchi. .I also came across the web info but I was hoping someone had some personal insight into them. I need to be sure the clearance will work with the new bags. The Gen3 should work, but then again so should the stock exhaust. I like the idea of the Gen3 as the bags have cutouts for exhaust and in the Carbon with the Gen3 it would blend quite well. The M10 looks great but the overall esthetic effect is less when paired with the bags on the bike. If do not use a PC what is the potential problems?

No, the stock exhaust sits up higher than any of the slipons I've seen. Look at your mounting locations and size of cans versus my picture above. the aftermarkets sit about 3/4" lower at least, and are narrower around. That combined with at least half the heat of the stockers makes a huge difference! If heat is still a worry, just get carbon fiber cans. With CF cans, you can quite literally grab them with your bare hands and not get burned after you've been riding for awhile. Amazing. Had them on my last bike, a TL1000R. Would grab them at stoplights to warm my hands in the winter time.

The CF sounds like the way to go. The Muzzy's pictured on the Corbin site look to have a ton of clearance. What about the negative effect of no PC?

No negative affect at all. The stock computer runs the 14 so damn rich that anything that you do (exhaust, race air filter, etc) still will not make it run lean.

I know alot of guys here will spout off about that statement, but I have yet to see even ONE dyno graph showing a 14 running lean on a dyno. Hell, the benefits of a PCIII are mostly that it LEANS the curve out to its proper 13.7 to 1 ratio. And allows the removal of the flies of course!

I have been using the Corbin hard bags on my Zx for approx 15,000 miles. I have stock exhaust and have often stuffed them full. Never a problem with melting , bubbling or cracking. Distance between cans and bags is approx 1/2 at it's closest. Just curious if bags have been repainted? Corbin uses a flat paint on the bottom half of the bags.

The bags were picked up Friday from the dealer so they are brand new. It does look like a flat paint on the bottom. The bags sit about 1/4" if not a little less from the exhaust (empty) if anything is in the bags it would sit on the exhaust. I would have expected no melting especially on a product worth so much $$$. The look is great (for their purpose) and I want to make it work. I removed them right away so the damage is limited to the paint on the underside of the bags. It is just a small blister on either side about 1/2 the size of a dime. Glad to here someone else is looking for a nice sport bike with a practical side.
