Question for the Sprinters.

I've been concentrating on top speed runs for the past couple of years and went to the JD meeting at Woodbridge, England last weekend. The conditions weren't good for Flyers (top speed runs) so I decided to concentrate on the standing quarters.

Here's the thing, I was geared 17/40 for top speed and running stock wheelbase with a standard BT014 rear. No shifter or any other sprint modifications. I got it into the nines three times with a best of 9.84sec at 142mph and a 1.69sec 60 foot. To say I was surprised is an understatement. The bike felt really strong off the line, is this result actually any good? These were the first quarters I've done for about ten years.

That's definitely not bad with -1 on the rear gearing. If you go down one on the front you would probably pick up 6~7 mph due to the fact it will be a little longer (launching/60ft) plus you'll be turning more rpm at the end in 4th equaling more (mph).

Very good .......Brock also used 17/40 gears in his Maxton bike and used the same gear in the 1/4 mile ....He said it helped keep the front end down in first gear...Keep working on your 1/4 mile times because it will only make you faster in the standing mile ..

Thanks, it certainly did help keep the front down and the bike had no problem pulling the higher 1st gear off the line. It beat several other bikes including 08 Hayabusa's and 14's, some pulling stock gearing. I think starting on the green light also helped fire me up for a more explosive start, usually with our top speed runs it's just a startline marshall giving you the nod.

BobC, what kind of throttle launch technic do you use on the start?
Thanks & Cheers Mate!

I'm not claiming to be the expert but this is what worked for me with my bike at this track:

Start at about 4000rpm and wind the throttle on as the clutch bites and this is really important, on no account let the engine revs drop, keep them rising. Get the clutch out and onto full throttle as quickly as possible staying just below the point where you induce a wheely. Lean forward and be aggressive but stay in control.

The track was really grippy last weekend so I could just concentrate on the above without worrying about wheelspin. My 1400 has so much torque that launching with more rpm was not neccessary but I was getting that throttle open really fast. A buddy who tried my bike used more revs, spent more time slipping the clutch and was slower.

I forgot to say in the original post that I won the Modified Stock class standing quarters..

OK, over to the experts.

Bob,

way to go. Congratulations.

Haven't tried it yet but it looks fun. At what RPM did your shift?

Thanks Flyboy, I shifted at around 11000rpm. Yes it's fun, hadn't done quarters for ages and I think I could be hooked again.

Bob, another questions: when you did shift at 11K RPM from 1st to 2nd, did the bike trend to do a wheelie?, what about 2nd to 3rd?
Thanks & Regards,
David

No it didn't wheelie, I tried really hard not to wheelie as it's slower, even though it might be a crowd pleaser. By backing off the throttle just a bit as you change up, keeping your bodyweight forward and using fine throttle control you can prevent it. The front wheel was just hovering and that's got to be the point where you achieve maximum acceleration. The bike was lowered and strapped so there was minimal squat at the rear and no spring travel at the front pushing it up and that makes a huge difference to how hard you can launch.

Thanks Bob........lowered ans strapped......hum. I will have to think about it. I guess this is only good for speed tracks, right? (1/4 mile stuff)?
Cheers,
David
