My new ZX14...somehow lacking the expected power???

Hi all. Thats a bit misleading of a topic but thats a short space......I just recently traded my Monster 1000 on a new ZX14. I'm a diehard Kawy guy forever, just bought the Duc cuz it was a "too good too pass" deal.

I just completed my break in period. Did my first service and rode home anticipating a tire smoking wheelstanding monster of a fun ride....wtf....not nearly as much power on tap as the sales guy, the various forums, or another ZX14 owner had led me to believe???

The bike is relatively quick, (despite my 200lbs) but absolutely docile. the first time I brought it past 7g I was disappointed by that lack of an explosive (ala VMax) power band. Is it possible I got one of those "built Friday afternoon" bikes?? Anyone else gone from something else to a ZX14 expecting more and been surprised?

FWIW, I've got an old ZX9 (1985 GPZ900r) with 80000kms on it, and its got a much more noticeable power band at 7g +

Before I go the Flies out/PCIII/Pipe it route (which is on the way) and start swapping sprockets, i'd like too hear from some other newbie ZX owners...

thanks!

what year is your bike?

I honestly believe the '06/07 14s are dangerous below 6K. Regardless as to why Kawi put it there, I think it sucked. Sure, getting your arms yanked at 6000K+ was cool, but I didn't like the fact that I had to 'wind it up' to get it going. Absolutely useless to me.

De-fly'd, Brock'd, gear'd, lowerer'd and PC'd my 14....and I'll never look back....unless I'm trying to see the guy I was racing.

Wow...this doesn't give me much to look forward to. Have you considered a Dyno pull to make sure it is putting out what it should?

Ditto...These bikes are geared to do 195mph (un-restricted) from the factory. Nice for that rare Sunday 5am morning when you want to go that fast, but in the real day to day gear it down to 16/43 and pipe it and pull those flies ....It's a beast

I rode a stock 06' 14 myself and found it "soft". The power reminded me of my 00' 12R when it was stock.

I am not just talking about the 14's power here. The handling was 'Busa Like", low, wide, long and mushy.

Now, with that said...I would need to ride one with a full pipe, PC , good mapping, flies out, and the suspention set up properly for me to see what it has for my 00'1270R

Yes mine is so powerless with the flys in place I could only run a 9.18 @ 152 stockwheel base with a pipe and P/C ...What a pile of low powered crap Kawi sold me ....Top that off the damn thing only made 173 on the dyno .........At 62 inch wheel base with flys in place i could only run a 8.91 @ 154 ....Kawi sure sold me a slow lump of coal ...

How much do you weigh? According to the Owner's Manual (yes, I read it) it says the front and rear shock settings are for an average 150lb. rider. If you are heavier than that.....there is your mush.

its just so smooth you thought it was wasn't trying, with the flies in the low end is very docile, but still check your speed before you think its not hauling

I just went for my first ride with the flies removed, exhaust installed and a pciii. All I can say is holy shit!!! It's a completely different bike, the power at lower rpm's is simply amazing now.

What year is your bike lowcel? I have read the guys with 08's are finding lower 60 ft times when looseing the flys. Mine is needing some upgrades but I want to find out what works best so I don't have to double up on buying any of the go fast goodies....

lose the flies, gain low end, they open faster on the 08 but not as fast as not being there

oops, forgot to mention (I could have bought a new/old stock 07 for 1g less) its a 2008.

I'm not doubting this thing is scary fast, but it just seems underpowered at lower rpms.

The parts guy at the dealership I bought it from owns one, I've been dealing with him for a few years, he warned me the day i bought it, that this bike would have power delivery unlike any other I've owned and I should take some time to get used to it before whacking the throttle open.( Hehe, I barely made it a block before I tried exactly that).

I'm going to try a one under front one over rear sprocket first, then when my pipe and PCIII come in I'll have a better idea of what to expect. Realistically this thing seems geared waaaay to high for everyday street riding anyhow.

Mine is a 2007. I got mine new about three weeks ago for $9,700. I lost my ass on my trade though, a 2007 ZX6R.

Holy sht Messenger1 I busted out laughing. No power you must be fukn kiddn. I owned 750 turbo that would go at least as fast as a 900 ninja and the power seemed mild or about the power at about 6000 rpm of the 14. Better find out what the problem is.

Unfortunately it sounds like everybody built up so much hype for you that the 14 didn't have a chance of living up. The 14's a very fast, but very smooth bike stock, and the speed is very deceptive. After getting off my stock 14 onto a friends first generation piped geared busa, the busa felt slow compared to my 14. 14's are pretty tame power delivery wise stock, but when you uncork them they are unbelievably, almost dangerously brutal in the way they hand out power...nothing, and I mean NOTHING like a stocker. Whole new bike. Mines a first gen 14 and responded hella well to my mods. I'm not sure if an 08 will be the same or not though. Kawi coulda sent this bike out as a genuine world beater instead of clipping its wings and making us do the work. It must been the corporate lawyers behind it....

I ran 5.80 @ 122+ Silver 08's 14 yesterday with bolt-ons, a pipe,.pc, and gearing . I'd say they're just a strong as the other years with the flys out. The 08 Busas at the track couldn't get into the 6.00s. I'll be able to ride one (08 Busa) next week set up the same way for a little comparison on the same day.
