Radar Detector mounts - safest?

My first mod, and most critical in my mind, is the installation of a radar detector. I got a nice Bel RX65 and Techmount. Wondering whether the velcro supplied with the techmount is solid enough to keep the $300 detector in place when going over bumps etc. Any recommendations for a more solid/permanent mounting?

Also, I'm planning to wire the detector directly to the battery - is this better/worse than trying to figure out how to plumb it into the electrical system?

I found the widscreen the best....

I bought a spare winshield mount , the standard one with suction cups for the RX65, drilled 2 holes in the windcreen, removed the cups and bolted the mount up with button head bolts.

Later I swapped to black bolts on the tinted screen... hardley even noticable

Works great.

Also, I used the marker lamp wires, for power outlet. The marker lamps are always powered when the igniton is on.
I put a powered outlet in the ram air cover.

@Dubious: you trust that stock Bel mount? I was testing the detector in the car with it and a) the bracket barely has enough heft to support the detector and b) the slot-in design is crap. I made a slightly-heavier than normal stop and the detector ended up in the passenger seat. I'm getting a zero-gravity windscreen and don't mind the drilling, but I can't see the detector staying on that clip if I made a sudden stop.

I do like the 12v outlet, way cool.

The only problem I have ever had with the stock bracket is the suction cups.
The detetor has naver come out of the bracket, I have used it for 3 years and over 100,000 km or 60,000 miles combined, in car, truck and on bike.
As long as you make sure the positive stop is locked and the detecor levers itself ahainst the windscreen is will never come off, unless the windscreen does.

Once you have the detector in the bracket, give it a little pull , as if trying to remove it without depressing the latch button. This ensures it is locked in. I used 2 little rubber bumpers on the detector , designed for kitchen cabinets so as not to scratch the windscreen or windshield, plus they dampen some of the vibration, and actually grab the the surface its levered against.

Unless you live in Russia, I can almost guarentee, your roads are in better shape than ours.

also this is in the mail for me....

the 12 volt outlet is good for electric vests, gps or whatever else too.

Marks got the hot setup, but I spent $5000 on turbo instead of $3000 on radar/lidar detection...

i have the techmount on my bike and also use a black zip tie because I do not trust the velcro as the only thing holding on the device.

So that's what the button in the middle does. Maybe I should look at the manual sometime.

Thanks!

The one pictured is a PUIG dbl bubble.
I am putting a Zero Gravity standard smoked one on it though...
I found the double bubble shot the wind at the top of my head, and like the flow dynaics of the standard height better,

I paid $260 for the Bel RX65 on Ebay. According to Radar Roy and others it is the best, and I need it coz I just got a 3-pointer in a construction zone. Or there's Cobra's at Radio Shack and elsewhere for $30 bucks that include laser detection. Who knows? As long as it keeps you one step ahead of the Federales...

Bell sells an external speaker that fits under the front side black plastic. Plugs into the bell jack outlet. It is really loud! Not 150mph loud but I can hear it @ 100mph or less with a full helmet on. I think bell sells it for around $30.00. Highly recommended.

read the mount review in the article's archive... velcro is more than enough to hold the RX65 to the techmount... I run that exact setup and have tens of thousands of miles on it.

tell them you're a bikeland member when you call..

oh... ram mounts=junk.

re: hooking up to the battery, this is also in the radar review in the articles section (links in menu bar above) ... have mine hooked into battery directly as well with no probs

hope this helps
